Samsung Galaxy A Series: New lineup starts at $110 and two models have 5G

Starting at just $110, Samsung's low-priced Galaxy A series phones for the US, unveiled Wednesday, are more wallet-friendly for shoppers on a budget. And they come as consumers wait for Apple to introduce its own cheaper smartphone, likely a successor to the 2016's iPhone SE. So yes, as the global economy crashes and more than a million people have been diagnosed with the novel coronavirus, Samsung's betting we'll still need new phones -- even if we're not willing to pay as much for them.

Samsung on Wednesday said six smartphones in its A Series lineup -- some new and some previously announced -- will be coming to the US. The lineup, which has been popular in recent months, is known for being inexpensive compared with the company's flashy Galaxy S and Galaxy Note devices. The four 4G LTE phones range from $110 for the Galaxy A10 to $400 for the Galaxy A51. Samsung even introduced two 5G models, the $500 Galaxy A51 5G and the $600 Galaxy A71 5G, giving Samsung two of the cheapest 5G phones in the US. (The 5G models will cost £429 and £519 respectively in the UK, which converts to about AU$850 and AU$1,030.) Here's how the A Series compares.

The devices all sport Samsung's curved displays and fast charging capabilities. The higher-end models have more -- and better -- camera lenses than the cheaper phones and come with other improvements like bigger batteries and more internal storage. And notably, they all come with 3.5mm headphone jacks.

The Galaxy A01 and A51 will hit the market Thursday first at Verizon, while the others, including the 5G models, will arrive this summer. Samsung previously unveiled the A01, A11 and A51 phones for other markets, but Wednesday is the first time it talked up its 5G models and its new Galaxy A21.

"What's great is the midtier consumer doesn't have to choose between great technology and great value," Caleb Slavin, senior manager of smartphone product strategy at Samsung Electronics America, said Tuesday in a call with journalists. He noted the A Series is aimed at consumers who care about the "essentials" like big displays and batteries.

Samsung's phone news comes as the globe battles the novel coronavirus outbreak. The virus, which causes an illness called COVID-19, was first detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan late last year. The World Health Organization in March labeled COVID-19 a pandemic, and the virus since then has changed the way we live. Cities and entire countries around the globe have issued lockdowns, shuttering stores, canceling events and ordering citizens to stay at home to help contain the coronavirus. Millions of people have lost their jobs amid one of the worst economic downturns in decades.

A phone slowdown

Smartphone makers, led by Samsung and Apple, have been jacking up prices over the last few years. But people watching their budgets are unlikely to spend $1,000 on a new phone right now. Even before the pandemic, people were pushing back by waiting longer to upgrade their phones or opting for less expensive devices. But the coronavirus is hurting both production and sales, as well as slowing the expansion of 5G wireless technology.

Smartphone shipments saw their biggest ever drop in February -- down 38% to 61.8 million units, according to Strategy Analytics -- as COVID-19 ravaged China, one of the world's largest markets and a vital manufacturing hub. For this whole year, phone sales should hit a 10-year low. Shipments of mobile phones, which include flip phones, likely will drop 13% to 1.57 billion units in 2020, while smartphone shipments should tumble about 11% to 1.26 billion units, according to CCS Insights.

Samsung on Monday became one of the first tech companies to show how COVID-19 is impacting business. The company said its sales for the March quarter will rise from the previous year but won't be quite as strong as Wall Street anticipated. It didn't elaborate on its preliminary results but will give more information later this month. It likely benefited from strong memory chip sales but saw a decline in its smartphone business.

Still, smartphones have long been viewed as essential, even for people who can't afford the latest pricey gadgets. Some purchases that would normally take place early in 2020 will be delayed to later in the year, predicted Counterpoint Research analyst Neil Shah. "The US should recover fast in the second half from a rollout perspective," he said.

Cheaper 5G devices

There's an opportunity for companies making cheaper phones, particularly when it comes to 5G. The first 5G devices accessing the super-fast network have been expensive. Samsung's Galaxy S10 5G from last year cost $1,299, while its regular 4G-enabled S10 started at $900. This year's lineup of Galaxy S20 phones all come with 5G and start at $1,000.

Samsung's Galaxy A90, its first 5G phone in the A Series, retailed for 749 euros (about $830) when it went on sale in Europe in October. The company's new A51 and A71 5G phones are even cheaper and are closer to the level touted by companies like Chinese giant TCL.

TCL, best known for its TVs, on Monday said it will sell its first TCL-branded 5G phone in the US for $399 (£399, approximately AU$800) later this year. The company hopes that pricing will help it immediately attract buyers as it tries to build its brand outside its BlackBerry and Alcatel labels.

Apple, for its part, is expected to introduce its new, less expensive iPhone any day. That device is believed to build on 2016's beloved iPhone SE, but it's not expected to have 5G connectivity. The 2020 iPhone SE may cost $399 (likely £399 or AU$699), the same amount as its predecessor from four years ago.

Samsung's A Series specs

As for Samsung, its two new 5G phones will be hard for many companies to match in the US. The A51 5G will cost $500 when it goes on sale this summer. It features a 6.5-inch FHD Plus Super AMOLED Infinity-O display, a quad-camera array with a 48-megapixel main lens, and 15-watt fast charging support.

The A71 5G will retail for $600. It sports a 6.7-inch FHD Plus Super AMOLED Plus Infinity-O display, quad-camera array with a 64-megapixel main lens, and 25-watt fast charging. Both have 128GB of internal storage, 6GB of RAM, 4,500-mAh batteries and on-screen optical fingerprint sensors. They also come with microSD slots, letting you add up to 1TB of additional memory.

Samsung's new Galaxy A lineup starts at $110.

Samsung

The LTE version of the Galaxy A51 features many of the same specs as its 5G sibling but comes with a smaller, 4,000-mAh battery; only 4GB of RAM instead of 6; and expandable memory up to 512GB. It costs $400 and goes on sale at Verizon on Thursday before arriving at Sprint on Friday. It will arrive at other carriers and retailers later on. 4G LTE versions of the A71 and A51 are already on sale in the UK and Australia, starting at £329 and AU$749.

AT&T plans to carry the A51 in early May. When it's available, customers will be able to order online and tap into  AT&T's doorstep deliver with virtual setup in select markets.

The other phone going on sale at Verizon on Thursday is the low-end Galaxy A01. It costs $110 and features a 5.7-inch HD Plus Infinity-V display. It has two rear cameras, a 13-megapixel main camera and a 2-megapixel depth lens. The front-facing selfie camera is 5 megapixels. The Galaxy A01 has a 3,000-mAh battery with fast charging and comes with 16GB of internal memory and 2GB of RAM. The memory can be expanded to 512GB through a microSD card. It will arrive at other carriers in the coming weeks.

Two other phones will hit the market this summer: the $180 Galaxy A11 and the $250 Galaxy A21. The A11 features a 6.4-inch HD Plus Infinity-O display, a 4,000-mAh battery, 32GB of internal storage and 2GB of RAM. It comes with three rear-facing lenses -- a 13-megapixel wide angle, 5-megapixel ultrawide and 2-megapixel depth -- and an 8-megapixel front-facing selfie camera.

The A21 sports a 6.5-inch HD Plus Infinity-O display, 4,000-mAh battery, 15 watt fast charge support, 32GB of internal storage and 3GB of RAM. The device has a 13-megapixel front-face camera and four camera lenses on the back: a 16-megapixel main camera, 8-megapixel ultrawide, 2-megapixel macro and 2-megapixel depth camera. Both the A11 and A21 can be expanded to 512GB memory through a microSD card.

AT&T's Cricket Wireless and AT&T Prepaid businesses will carry the Galaxy A01 and A11 smartphones this year. It said it will announced pricing and availability in the coming months.

Owlet releases Dream Duo monitor that tracks babies' sleep

Owlet has released a new baby sleep monitoring system that focuses on helping babies (and their parents) rest easier by tracking patterns in infants' sleep and offering tips and sleep plans.

The Dream Duo is a monitoring system that consists of the Dream Sock, a sock that wraps around a baby's foot and tracks wakings, movement and heart rate, along with a video camera and an app that provides information about room temperature, humidity and noise levels. Parents can read the data from the Dream app, which is free for iPhone and Android users, and is supposed to act as a "digital sleep coach," according to the company. The system will let parents know when their baby needs assistance to sleep soundly, Owlet said. The app comes with a sleep-learning program aimed to provide personalized insights into their infant's sleep.

The Dream Sock is intended for babies up to 18 months, or between 5 and 18 pounds.

In November, Owlet stopped selling its Smart Sock in the US after the Food and Drug Administration warned that the sock should be registered as a medical device because of its heart rate and oxygen notifications. According to a notice from Owlet, there were no safety concerns identified, and the Smart Sock doesn't need to be returned or exchanged. (The company has announced plans to submit those features to the FDA for marketing authorization in the US.)

Owlet informed the FDA of its plans to introduce the new Dream Sock, the company told CNET, which Owlet believes does not present the same concerns the FDA had about the Smart Sock's heart rate and oxygen notifications.

Electronic monitoring devices for infants have been controversial. For some parents, these devices offer peace of mind, but other parents claim it brings more anxiety than relief, and some experts say they aren't always reliable. The American Academy of Pediatrics and many researchers have warned against using smart baby monitors to try to detect sudden infant death syndrome, or SIDS, as such devices haven't been tested or proven to give such warning signals.

The Dream Duo system, which includes the Dream Sock and camera, costs $399. The sock alone is available now for $299 on Owlet's website, buybuy Baby and Walmart. The Owlet Cam can also be purchased alone for $149.

3 Spotify Audio Settings That All 188 Million Subscribers Should Probably Change

With over 188 million subscribers worldwide as of this month, Spotify is arguably one of the most popular music streaming platforms in the world. CNET also ranks Spotify as one of the best music streaming services on the market.

CNET Tech Tips logo

Spotify lets you listen to music wherever you are, recommends new songs based on your activity and provides fun, personalized streaming data at the end of every year. Paid subscribers can also make and share playlists with friends on social media, or with the whole world through the app.

If you feel like something is missing from your listening experience though, Spotify lets you take control of various settings to make your music sound more superb. That way whether you're in a quiet library, your morning commute or pumping some iron in the gym, your music will always fit the mood.

Here's how to crank your Spotify listening experience up to 11 no matter what the situation.

Adjust your base volume to match your environment

Volume is pretty easy to figure out, but did you know Spotify lets premium users adjust the base volume of the app depending on their environment? You can select either Quiet, Normal or Loud, and each has its own benefit.

Quiet will make songs a little quieter and sound cleaner, making it a good choice if you're relaxing at home. Normal makes songs play at a medium base volume, and the sound is less crisp than Quiet. This is a good choice for most people and situations. Loud is -- you guessed it -- louder, but you might lose some audio quality because of the loudness. This option is good if you're at the gym or other similarly noisy environments.

Here's how to adjust the base volume on your iPhone:

1. Open the Spotify app.
2. Tap the gear icon in the top-right corner of your screen.
3. Tap the Playback option near the top of the menu.
4.
Beneath Volume level there are three options: Loud, Normal and Quiet

If you're using the Spotify app on a Mac, here's how to adjust the base volume:

1. Open Spotify.
2. Click the down arrow in the top-right corner.
3. Scroll down until you see Audio Quality.
4. Under Audio Quality, you should see Volume level
5. Click the drop-down bar to the right of Volume level.
6. From here, you see the same Loud, Normal and Quiet options. Pick whichever one works for you.

Here's how to adjust the base volume if you're using the Spotify app on an Android device:

1. Open Spotify.
2. Tap the gear icon to access Settings.
3. Scroll down to Playback and you should see Volume Level.
4. Next to Volume Level you should see the LoudNormal and Quiet options. Pick the one you want.

Finally, here's how to adjust the base volume in Spotify while on a Windows computer:

1. Open Spotify.
2. Click your account name in the top-right corner.
3. Click Settings.
4. Under Audio Quality, you should see Volume level. Click the drop-down bar to the right.
5. Select either LoudNormal or Quiet.

Spotify playlists on iPhone

Use the equalizer to customize your sound for your favorite genres.

Angela Lang/CNET

Use the Spotify Equalizer for more control

If you prefer being more hands-on with how your bass and treble come across in each song, you can adjust the in-app equalizer. Adjusting your bass affects lower frequency sounds, making your music sound deeper with increased bass or flat with less bass. Treble affects the higher sound frequencies, making your music sound brighter and more crisp with increased treble or duller and kind of muddied with less treble.

Here's how to access the equalizer on your iPhone:

1. Open Spotify.
2. Tap the gear in the top right corner to access Settings.
3. Tap the Playback option.
4. Scroll down the menu and tap Equalizer.

Here's how to access the equalizer on your Android device:

1. Open Spotify.
2. Tap the gear icon to access Settings.
3. Under the Audio quality heading -- not under Data Saver -- tap Equalizer.

This opens the equalizer page on both systems. Here you can find the manual equalizer slider and a handful of premade genre-based equalizers.

You should see the manual equalizer slider that looks like a line graph with six dots. When you first get to this page, the equalizer should be flat.

Each dot on the graph can be adjusted for more or less sound. The far left bar represents your bass, the far right bar controls your treble and the middle bars control -- you guessed it -- your midrange. You can tweak the bars as you see fit.

There are also genre-based equalizers on this page. You can pick which genre you're listening to and the app automatically adjusts the sliders to optimize for that style of music. After picking one, you can further adjust the sliders for the perfect listening experience.

If you want to reset the equalizer, there's a genre-based equalizer called Flat. This will reset the equalizer to its default.

The Mac and Windows versions of Spotify don't have an in-application equalizer. But you can search for an equalizer application to help you in your journey to find the best sound.

Music on the Spotify app

Adjusting these settings can really make your music pop

James Martin/CNET

Adjust the quality of your music for a clearer sound

You can also adjust the audio quality of your music. This is handy if you're using mobile data and don't want to bump up your phone bill. Reducing the audio quality will use less data.

Here's how to change the audio quality on mobile and tablet:

1. Open the Spotify app.
2. Tap the gear icon to access Settings.
3. Scroll down until you see the heading Audio Quality -- not under Data Saver.
4. Under WiFi streaming and Cellular streaming, you can select Low, Normal, High or Automatic. The Automatic option adjusts the audio quality to whatever your signal strength is. There is also a fifth option for paid subscribers called Very high.

How to change the audio quality on your desktop:

1. Open Spotify.
2. Click the down arrow in the top-right corner.
3. Click Settings.
4. Scroll down to Audio Quality.
5. Beneath Audio Quality you should see Streaming quality. Click the drop-down menu to the right.
6. Choose between Low, Normal, High or Automatic options, and the Very high option for paid subscribers.

Stop Paying for Starbucks. It's Easy to Make Iced Coffee at Home

This story is part of Home Tips, CNET's collection of practical advice for getting the most out of your home, inside and out.

On a scorching summer day, nothing hits the spot like a big iced coffee. But if your Dunkin' or Starbucks habit is starting to stretch your wallet and you want to save some money, know this: It's actually really easy to make iced coffee at home, with the same basic ingredients as your regular hot coffee.

CNET Home Tips logo

Iced coffee isn't the same as cold brew coffee -- it's less concentrated, and it has less caffeine. But while cold brew often takes a whole day to, well, brew, and requires a specialized cold brew maker, iced coffee is far more convenient, and also retains more of the subtle flavor notes of the coffee than cold brew does.

Here's how to make your own iced coffee at home. We've also got tips on how to make ice cream in your food processor, and how to make a viral Dirty Shirley cocktail. You can also check out our picks for the best coffee maker and the best coffee grinder

What you need to make iced coffee

It might seem obvious, but here's what you'll need to make iced coffee at home:

  • Brewed coffee (this can be from your Keurig, an automatic coffee pot, a pour-over or any other method you prefer)
  • Ice
  • Extras (sugar, simple syrup, flavored syrups, cream, milk, etc.)

How to make iced coffee

Here's the easiest way to make iced coffee.

1. Let your fresh brewed coffee cool. You can either let it sit out until it reaches room temperature, put it in the freezer for a few minutes, or if you're thinking ahead, refrigerate it overnight so it's ready to pour in the morning.

2. Fill a glass with ice, and pour the cooled coffee over it. (If you impatiently pour hot coffee over ice, you just get weak, lukewarm coffee.)

3. Add any of your preferred extras, like cream and sugar.

Extra tip: Freeze some of your brewed coffee in ice cube trays. Next time you make an iced coffee that you want to keep cold without watering it down so much, drop some in.

It's really that easy. Now go enjoy it for the rest of the summer.

Resetting Your Apple ID Password Is Easy. Here's How

Resetting Your Apple ID Password Is Easy. Here's How

Resetting Your Apple ID Password Is Easy. Here's How

Apple users know how important their Apple ID and password are. Without these two bits of information, you can't access Apple services like iCloud and iMessage. An Apple ID and password can also help set up a new iPhone or MacBook.

CNET Tech Tips logo

If you forgot your Apple ID password (and don't use a password manager) or your account has been compromised, you might not be able to access your device or any of Apple's services. Resetting your Apple ID password might be just the trick to gaining access again.

Here are some easy ways to change your Apple ID password.

Reset your Apple ID password with your iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch

iPhones accounted for about half of Apple's revenue in 2021, according to consumer data website Statista, so we'll start there. The instructions for resetting your Apple ID password on your iPhone will also work on your iPad and Apple Watch. Here's how.

1. Go to Settings.

2. Tap your name.

3. Tap Password & Security.

4. Tap Change Password

Follow the onscreen instructions, and you're all set. Easy, right?

Resetting your Apple ID password from a Mac device

You can also reset your Apple ID password from your MacBook or iMac. Here's how.

1. Click the Apple logo in the top left corner of your screen and click System Preferences

2. Click Apple ID.

3. Click Password and Security.

4. Click Change Password…

Follow the onscreen prompts to finish changing your password.

Reset your Apple ID password on a new device

While setting up a new Apple device, you'll be asked to sign into your Apple ID. If you can't remember your password, no worries. Here's how to reset your password during the setup process.

1. During device setup, select Forgot Apple ID or Password? whenever the option is available.

2. Finish the setup process.

3. Once setup is complete, select an app or another option that requires you to sign into your Apple ID. On iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch, you can select Messages. On your Mac computer, follow the instructions above.

Resetting your Apple ID password without an Apple device

If you've forsaken Apple devices after previously using them, but you still need to log into your Apple ID, you have a few options. You can either borrow a friend or family member's Apple device, or you can use one of the devices in an Apple store. You can't follow the same directions as above, though. Instead, here's how to change your Apple ID password from a borrowed or in-store device.

1. Open the Apple Support app. You can also download the Apple Support app from the App Store.

2. Select Passwords & Security.

3. Select Reset Apple ID Password.

4. Select Get Started.

5. Select A different Apple ID

6. Enter your Apple ID and follow the onscreen prompts.

7. Once your password is reset, make sure to log out. You don't want someone else to have access to your profile.

Reset your Apple ID password from the web

If all else fails, Apple has a website you can visit to reset your Apple ID password. However, Apple warns this process might take longer than the other methods on this list. But if it's your only option, visit iforgot.apple.com, follow the instructions and your password will be reset.

It's important to remember that once you change your Apple ID password on one device, you'll have to log back in on your other devices with your new password. So instead of forgetting your new password in three days and repeating this cycle again, save yourself the headache now and log back into everything while your new password is fresh in your mind.

About 13,000 pounds of Home Run Inn frozen meat pizzas are being recalled due to potential metal contamination. The product's meat topping "may be contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically metal," according to a Sunday announcement from the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service.

The recall applies to 33.5-ounce boxes of Home Run Inn Chicago's Premium Pizzeria Deluxe Sausage Classic Pizza with a best by date of Dec. 3, 2022. That's the equivalent of about 6,256 pizzas.

The issue was discovered when customers sent complaints stating that metal was found in the pizza. No confirmed reports of injuries or adverse reactions due to eating the product have been made, the USDA said.

If you recognize this product in your freezer, check to see if the label, expiration date and other specific information matches that of the recalled product.

Home Run Inn's pizzas aren't the only products that have been recently recalled. Many drinks made by Lyons Magnus, including products from Oatly, Premier Protein and Stumptown, have also been pulled due to possible contamination.

Free Streaming Service IMDb TV to Become Amazon Freevee

Amazon will rename its free streaming service IMDb TV as Amazon Freevee on April 27, the company said Wednesday.

IMDb TV, part of the Amazon-owned movie and TV database IMDb, is an ad-supported library of TV shows, movies and channels. It launched under the name Freedive in 2019. The streaming service has grown rapidly over the past two years, tripling its monthly active users, Amazon said in a press release.

"Customers are increasingly shifting to streaming ad-supported premium content, and we have developed Freevee to deliver them highly sought content with half the commercials of traditional TV," Freevee director Ashraf Alkarmi said.

Freevee plans to add 70% more original content this year, including dramas, rom-coms and a home-design series.

The Information reported in November that Amazon had been considering a rebrand for IMDb TV, reasoning that it was too difficult to pronounce. Other name pitches included Free TV, Free Streaming TV and Zon, short for Amazon, according to the report.

Samsung Accused Of Misleading Customers On Galaxy S 'water Resistance'

Samsung accused of misleading customers on Galaxy S 'water resistance'

An Australian government watchdog agency is taking Samsung to court over claims that the company's Galaxy phones are safe to take in the water.

In 2016 Samsung released its first IP68 water-resistant phone, the Galaxy S7. All of the electronics giant's flagship phones have since carried the IP68 certification for water resistance and have been advertised as water-friendly phones. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) says this amounts to false advertising.

There are two key components to the ACCC's issue with Samsung. First, Samsung's advertising indicated that submerging a Galaxy phone under 1.5 meters (about 5 feet) of water for 30 minutes or less wouldn't impact the device over the course of its lifetime. Second, Samsung advertised phones being used in beaches and pools, even though the IP68 certification only applies to fresh water.

ACCC reviewed over 300 Samsung ads as the basis for its claims, it said.

IP68 certified phones are technically water-resistant, not waterproof, and specifically for depths up to 1.5 meters and for 30 minutes or under. IP67 phones, like 2014's Galaxy S5, are resistant for 30 minutes or less for depths of 1 meter or less, but ACCC specifically referred to phones marketed from 2016 on.

The ACCC claims that Samsung has rebuffed warranty claims by customers who say their phones were damaged by water exposure. The watchdog also notes that Samsung's own website claims the Galaxy S10, its early-2019 flagship phone, is "not advised for beach or pool use."

"The ACCC alleges Samsung's advertisements falsely and misleadingly represented Galaxy phones would be suitable for use in, or for exposure to, all types of water, including in ocean water and swimming pools, and would not be affected by such exposure to water for the life of the phone, when this was not the case," ACCC Chair Rod Sims said.

"Samsung showed the Galaxy phones used in situations they shouldn't be to attract customers," Mr Sims said.

For its part, Samsung says it has noted ACCC's accusations and plans to defend itself in court.

"Samsung stands by its marketing and advertising of the water resistancy of its smartphones," the company said in a statement. "We are also confident that we provide customers with free-of-charge remedies in a manner consistent with Samsung's obligations under its manufacturer warranty and the Australian Consumer Law. Customer satisfaction is a top priority for Samsung and we are committed to acting in the best interest of our customers."

WhatsApp delays privacy update following concerns over Facebook data sharing

WhatsApp on Friday said it was postponing an update to its privacy policy following concerns and calls from users to switch to other encrypted apps like Signal and Telegram. The Facebook-owned app is now giving users until May 15 to review and accept its new policy, which relates to how businesses access user information

"No one will have their account suspended or deleted on February 8," WhatsApp said in a blog post. "We're also going to do a lot more to clear up the misinformation around how privacy and security works on WhatsApp."

Earlier this week, WhatsApp published an FAQ clarifying the terms of its updated privacy policy and responding to concerns that it shares personal information with parent company Facebook. The firm noted the update doesn't affect the privacy of messages with friends and family, and instead relates to messaging businesses through the platform. WhatsApp also said the update "provides further transparency about how we collect and use data."

Privacy advocates (as well as Elon Musk) have called for WhatsApp's users to ditch the Facebook-owned messaging app and instead opt for encrypted platforms like Signal. WhatsApp says personal messages are also protected by end-to-end encryption, but it has for years openly collected certain user data to share with Facebook. Telegram, another secure messaging app, on Tuesday said it had surpassed 500 million active users, and gained more than 25 million new global users in just 72 hours.

WhatsApp says neither it nor Facebook can see private messages. In addition, the company says it doesn't keep logs of who users message or call, can't see shared location and doesn't share contacts with Facebook.

Under WhatsApp's privacy policy, businesses have the option to use "secure hosting services from Facebook to manage WhatsApp chats with their customers, answer questions, and send helpful information like purchase receipts," WhatsApp says. If you communicate with a business, it can see what you're saying and then use that information for marketing, which could include advertising on Facebook. WhatsApp says it clearly labels conversations with businesses that use Facebook's hosting services.

Also, interacting with Facebook's Shops commerce feature via WhatsApp allows a person's shopping activity to be used to show related ads on Facebook and Instagram. WhatsApp says this feature is optional and that when you use it, "we will tell you in the app how your data is being shared with Facebook." Additionally, clicking on a Facebook ad with the option to message a business through WhatsApp could allow Facebook to then show more related ads.

Netflix Lays Off More Workers After Subscriber Loss

Netflix is facing another round of layoffs. On Tuesday, the streaming giant said it let go of about 150 employees, most based in the US. This is the second set of layoffs for Netflix following its earnings report in April that showed it lost 200,000 subscribers, its first subscriber drop in a decade.

"Our slowing revenue growth means we are also having to slow our cost growth as a company," a Netflix spokesperson said in an emailed statement. "So sadly, we are letting around 150 employees go today, mostly US-based. These changes are primarily driven by business needs rather than individual performance, which makes them especially tough as none of us want to say goodbye to such great colleagues."

In April, the streaming service laid off workers from its Tudum fan website, a Netflix companion site that launched in December.

In addition to the subscriber loss shown in its first-quarter earnings report, Netflix also expects to lose 2 million more subscribers in the three months from April to June. The company cited Russia's invasion of Ukraine and sanctions related to the war as factors impacting its number of subscribers.

Netflix also listed password sharing as an issue for its business, which is a reason the company is testing a way to charge fees for sharing an account

Meta Expands Parental Controls for Instagram and VR

Facebook's parent company Meta is rolling out an expanded set of parental supervision tools for Instagram and Quest VR headsets, the tech giant said Tuesday. Meta is expanding on the parental supervision features it unveiled in March, and adding new resources for parents that encourage dialogue to help foster positive online experiences for teens.

For Quest VR headsets, Meta is rolling out features that allow parents and guardians to approve or deny downloads and purchases and block specific apps that may be inappropriate. Parents can also view things like their teen's headset screen time, apps downloaded to the device and a list of Quest friends.

On Instagram, Meta is giving parents and guardians the ability to send invitations to their teens to initiate supervision tools, set specific times when they'd like to limit their teen's screen time and view information related to when their teen reports an account or post.

These expanded tools are available now in the US, and will be rolled out in the UK, Japan, Australia, Ireland, Canada, France and Germany later this month. Meta plans to roll the features out globally by the end of the year.

Additionally, parents and guardians will be able to use "nudges" to encourage their teens to take a break or discover something new on Instagram if they notice their teens constantly consuming the same type of content on Explore.

The expanded parental controls come as Meta faces increased criticism that it doesn't do enough to protect young users of its platforms. The company is dealing with multiple lawsuits alleging its algorithms harm young users, and in December lawmakers grilled Instagram chief Adam Mosseri at a Senate hearing, contending that the platform falls short in keeping young users safe.

Squonk? Snallygaster? For Halloween, Dress As One Of These Crazy Creatures

Squonk? Snallygaster? For Halloween, dress as one of these crazy creatures

Squonk? Snallygaster? For Halloween, dress as one of these crazy creatures

Don't want to go as the typical vampire, zombies or superhero this Halloween? Consider dressing up as your state's most popular mythical creature, which, depending where you live, might be Northfield Pigman, Sink Hole Sam or the Beast of Busco.

CashNetUSA and NeoMam Studios created a state-by-state creature list by researching the most famous mythical creatures by US state, then determining which were most commonly mentioned by state residents and local folklore.

Read more: Easiest costumes for Halloween 2019

Here's a full list of the most popular creature by state if you want to see which creepy creature made the grade where you live.

There are plenty of weird creatures to choose from. There are more recognizable monsters like Bigfoot (Sasquatch) from the forests of the Pacific Northwest, or the cute Jackalope (rabbit with antlers) of Wyoming, or perhaps the terrifying Chupacabra (bear-like animal that drinks goat's blood) of Texas.

But there are also some more obscure creatures, such as the car-mauling Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp from South Carolina or the Specter Moose of Maine.

Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp is covered in black fur, has lizard skin on its hands and feet, and glowing red eyes.

If you're looking for a group costume, there are the Dark Watchers from California. They're described as extremely tall humanoid creatures (ranging in height from 7 feet to15 feet tall), dressed in black flowing cloaks and black wide-brimmed hats.

The Dark Watchers also often carry walking sticks or staffs. Their faces are never seen and they don't speak. Spooky, indeed!

2022 Honda Passport books better looks, introduces TrailSport sub-brand

2022 Honda Passport books better looks, introduces TrailSport sub-brand

The Honda Passport's been a little tame in the looks department since the brand resurrected the name for its mid-size SUV. With the 2022 Passport, revealed Wednesday, Honda wants to tug things in the opposite direction. This Passport is supposed to exude a more adventurous, wilder side. Well, as wild as you can get for a Honda SUV. Regardless, it looks like a step in the right direction.

The new Passport's front end sees the biggest changes with a new grille and crossbar treatment, wider-looking headlights and redesigned skid claddings that Honda said provide a tougher look for the new front bumper. If the design looks familiar, it borrows heavily from the new Ridgeline pickup. That's not a bad thing. The rear gains a new bumper, too, and the exhaust outlets are larger this time around. Chrome accents are flush on the EX-L trim, while the Elite and newly minted TrailSport trim feature gloss black elements.

Speaking of TrailSport, let's dive into the new sub-brand. Honda's lacked an answer to the Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road and Subaru Wilderness-branded SUVs of the world. Now, it's TrailSport's job to peel some of those buyers off and into Honda's court. The sub-brand starts with Passport, but expect it to flourish across the brand's lineup and come to Pilot, CR-V and Ridgeline, almost certainly. Shoppers will find the "TrailSport" badge splashed across the Passport, painted in bright orange, and some special silver accents on the front and rear bumpers. The SUV also receives 18-inch wheels, a 0.40-inch increase to its front and rear track widths and a more rugged design for the tires.

Go Passport, go!

Honda

As for capability, Honda's Intelligent Traction Management system is standard, as is torque-vectoring all-wheel drive. Drivers will have 8.1 inches of ground clearance to play with as well. Like all other Passport models, a 3.5-liter V6 is standard with a nine-speed automatic onboard for shifting duties. If that's not enough, Honda's looking at adding more aggressive elements with some sort of off-road suspension upgrades and more aggressive tire options.

Inside, Honda didn't go overboard on TrailSport, but there's a splash of orange with the embroidered logo on the seats, and rubber floor mats. The same color provides a contrasting look for the cabin's stitching. A black-chrome gauge surround spruces things up, and when night falls, amber accent lights illuminate to carry on the orange glow.

While the TrailSport is the main addition to the Passport, other trims get a few new goods, too. The EX-L and Elite trims ride on new 20-inch wheels, there's a new gray instrument cluster with redesigned needles, a Honda Performance Development package to kit your Passport out further and broader side vents to improve aerodynamics. Honda Sensing is standard across the board, too, as is an 8-inch touchscreen display for infotainment needs. Rear seat reminder tech also joins the stable.

Honda didn't say when the new Passport will go on sale, nor did we receive prices yet, but expect information soon. The company's probably itching to see this new TrailSport brand to SUV-hungry US car buyers.
