iPhone 14 Pro May Get A16 Chip, While Others Stick With A15 Bionic
The premium iPhone 14 may also come with a premium performance upgrade, according to one analyst's prediction.
The new lineup of iPhones isn't expected to debut until the fall, but when it does, the iPhone 14 Pro will feature an A16 chip, while the other models will sport the A15 Bionic, the chip that powers the current iPhone 13 lineup, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted Sunday.
"Only two Pro models would upgrade to the A16 processor, while the 14 & 14 Max will remain the A15," Kuo said in a tweet Sunday.
But all iPhone 14 models are expected to have 6 gigabytes of RAM, he said, with the base models getting a 6.1-inch screen and the Max variants sporting a 6.7-inch display.
Apple's last two iPhone lineups have featured the same 6.1-inch size for the base model, going up to 6.7 inches for the Pro Max. According to the same July Nikkei Asian Review report, Apple will stick with these screen sizes for the iPhone 14, nixing the 5.4-inch Mini.
The iPhone 14 could also be equipped with Wi-Fi 6E and may be the first iPhone to ditch the physical SIM cards entirely.
Apple is expected to hold its annual fall iPhone event in September 2022, as it does almost every year, with the phones being released shortly thereafter.
Apple didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Motorola's Edge Plus Puts a 60MP Selfie Camera Up Front for Sharper Video Calls
Motorola has announced its new high-end phone for 2022: the $1,000 Motorola Edge Plus. It has a 6.7-inch screen along with sharper selfie and ultrawide cameras than most phones, including the iPhone 13 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. But Motorola makes compromises in other areas, particularly in the camera's lack of a telephoto lens.
The Edge Plus, which first launched in China as the Edge X30, will be available unlocked through retailers like Amazon, Motorola's website and Best Buy. Motorola hasn't shared specific US launch timing yet, but it did say the phone will also be available through Verizon, Boost Mobile and Republic Wireless in the coming months. The unlocked version will be available at a $100 discount at launch.
Motorola designed some of the Edge Plus' features around trends that emerged during the pandemic, said Ruben Castano, Motorola's head of customer experience, in an interview with CNET. Those trends include more time being spent watching TV, playing games and video chatting on phones. As such, the Edge Plus has a 6.7-inch OLED screen that can boost its refresh rate up to 144Hz and features a 60-megapixel front camera.
"The phone has become the center, almost a hub of entertainment for consumers," said Castano. "So that is the one thing that I think that pandemic did dramatically change in terms of consumer behaviors."
There are also two 50-megapixel cameras on the back along with a 2-megapixel depth camera for taking better portrait photos. The device runs on Qualcomm's newest mobile processor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.
Some of the Edge Plus' characteristics, particularly the sharp selfie camera and high display refresh rate, could help Motorola stand out against Samsung, which dominates the Android smartphone market. A refresh rate of 144Hz isn't new to smartphones -- not even for Motorola -- but it isn't exactly common either.
The Motorola Edge Plus has two 50-megapixel cameras and a 2-megapixel depth camera.
Motorola
The Asus ROG Phone 5, which is designed for gaming, has a 144Hz refresh rate. But a 120Hz refresh rate is more typical for mainstream phones like Samsung's Galaxy S22 lineup. The 60-megapixel front camera is also somewhat rare; Samsung's top-of-the-line Galaxy S22 Ultra has a lower resolution 40-megapixel selfie camera by comparison.
Motorola is also leaning on the Edge Plus' 50-megapixel ultrawide camera to distinguish it from the pack. Popular phones like the iPhone 13 Pro Max and Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra each have 12-megapixel ultra-wide cameras, potentially giving Motorola the chance to stand out.
However, it's doing so at a cost. Unlike many phones in Edge Plus' price range, Motorola's new phone doesn't have a dedicated telephoto camera lens. The company says other camera improvements it's made regarding pixel size, sensor size and aperture will enable a good enough digital zoom.
On paper, the Edge Plus' 50-megapixel main sensor also sounds like a step down from the older Edge Plus' 108-megapixel camera. But again, Motorola says it's improved the camera's pixel size and focus on this year's model.
The Motorola Edge Plus uses a digital zoom instead of a dedicated telephoto camera lens.
Motorola
The Motorola Edge Plus also has a 4,800-mAh battery and supports 30-watt fast charging. That's slightly faster than the Galaxy S22's 25-watt fast charging yet not as speedy as the Galaxy S22 Plus' and Galaxy S22 Ultra's 45-watt charging. But Motorola's phone does include an important perk: it comes with a 30-watt charger in the box. Apple and Samsung, meanwhile, don't even include chargers with their phones, let alone fast chargers.
Motorola says the Edge Plus will also receive at least two major Android operating system upgrades and three years of security updates. Samsung, on the other hand, just announced that its Galaxy S22 devices and other recent phones will support four generations of Android upgrades.
Motorola's parent company Lenovo is the third-largest smartphone-maker in the US, capturing 12% of the US market as of late 2021, according to Counterpoint Research. Lenovo doesn't even place in the top five when it comes to global shipments, Counterpoint Research also reports.
But Motorola's approach with the Edge Plus seemingly falls in line with the general direction smartphones are heading. In his story about the future of mobile devices, my colleague Patrick Holland reported that we'll continue seeing more niche phones with targeted appeal. Foldable phones and devices tailored for playing video games, like the Asus Rog Phone 5, fall under that umbrella. With its focus on specific tasks like video chatting and playing games, it sounds like the Motorola Edge Plus does, too.

Samsung says it sold more foldables in Galaxy Z Fold 3's launch month than in all of 2020
As 2021 draws to a close and CES 2022 approaches, Samsung has reported that consumers have come out in droves to buy its foldables, with the company shipping four times as many this year as it did in 2020.
This is in large part due to the new foldables that launched in August, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3. Combined, sales of both devices in the month after their debut surpassed how many the company sold the entire previous year, according to a press release.
Both foldables are refined versions of their predecessors, with better software and features, but more importantly, they're also notably cheaper. Though the Z Fold 3's $1,800 price still kept it out of reach of most consumers, the clamshell Z Flip 3 launched with a price tag of $999, finally giving consumers a foldable option at the same starting price as an iPhone 13 Pro.
For consumers who owned a non-Samsung phone, more switched brands to buy a Z Flip 3 than bought the $800 Samsung Galaxy S21, the company also said. The clamshell foldable served as a more attractive next phone than Samsung's flagship as well as the stylus-packing Samsung Galaxy Note 20.
Though Samsung didn't provide sales numbers, the growth matches Counterpoint Research's August expectations that 9 million foldables would be sold worldwide in 2021, a threefold increase over 2020. Samsung accounted for 88 percent of the foldable market last year, and while the report projects that'll wane (likely due to new devices, like the Oppo Find N, siphoning share), the company is still expected to sell three-quarters of the world's foldables through 2023.
That's when the mobile device landscape could change in a major way, as analysts expect Apple to release its rumored iPhone Flip foldable in 2023. But given how many more of the devices will be sold, with Counterpoint expecting foldable shipments to triple again by then, Samsung will have a sizable head start over its rivals.
The biggest winner will likely be consumers. We'd expect foldable prices to fall as manufacturers continue to refine designs and ramp up production of components like flexible displays and hinge mechanisms that've been costly to design but cheaper with every iteration. How cheap they'll get is anyone's guess, though companies are trying to drive the price down. TCL, for instance, chose not to mass produce its Project Chicago clamshell phone rather than release it at a $1,000 price point, though it's continuing to develop foldables – presumably aiming to get closer to the $500 and $600 prices of its most expensive phones.

The iPhone 14's Future May Be Hidden in iOS 16
The iPhone 14's Future May Be Hidden in iOS 16
This story is part of WWDC 2022, CNET's complete coverage from and about Apple's annual developers conference.
Apple's next major iPhone operating system, iOS 16, was previewed at WWDC and is now available to download for developers. The new iPhone update will work on the iPhone 8 and newer and likely launch alongside the rumored iPhone 14 this fall. iOS 16 offers a bunch of heavily requested features, such as the ability to customize your lock screen or edit sent iMessages. But if you look closely, iOS 16 might also reveal some clues about the iPhone 14.
While Apple told us a lot about new features coming to current iPhones, it lacked any specific mention of what to expect from the iPhone 14. That's not surprising; Apple never discusses new products before announcing them. Sometimes the company reserves certain software announcements for its annual iPhone event so it can debut these features as exclusives for the latest iPhone.
For example, Cinematic mode was absent from Apple's iOS 15 announcement and instead launched as an iPhone 13 feature in the fall. Though if you look closely, there were some subtle hints sprinkled in iOS 15. Since Apple launched Portrait mode for FaceTime calls in iOS 15, it's easy to imagine Apple creating a Portrait mode for video recording -- which is essentially what Cinematic mode is.
iOS 16 seems to be no different. Several features look like they have the potential to offer hints as to what we might expect for the iPhone 14 series. One of these clues is actually buried in the code for iOS 16.
The iPhone 14 might have an always-on display
I was disappointed to see that Apple didn't add an always-on display to iOS 16. It's a handy feature found on numerous Android phones, and even the Apple Watch. An always-on display shows basic information like the time or weather while your phone is asleep. Instead of lighting up your entire display like your lock screen does, an always-on display only activates a portion of the screen to save power. It's a great convenience and would make the iPhone more glance-friendly.
The Apple-focused site 9to5Mac reports it discovered multiple references in iOS 16 that suggest support for an always-on display could be in the iPhone's future. The blog found references to backlight management tools as well as hidden flags for engineers that could allow them to test the feature on an iPhone 13 Pro.
The Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro has an always-on display that shows the date, time, battery life and an avatar of an astronaut.
Sareena Dayaram/CNET
But always-on display support might be limited because the screen's refresh rate would have to dip down to 10Hz or even lower to use less power; way below the regular iPhone's typical 60Hz refresh rate. The always-on display for the Apple Watch works at 1Hz which isn't supported on any current iPhone (the 13 Pro can go as low as 10Hz) and that could mean that it debuts on the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max since it would likely require new hardware.
Even without these clues in the code, the revamped and customizable lock screen also hints at an always-on display. Specifically, the way iOS 16 notifications are corralled at the bottom of the screen makes me wonder if Apple is experimenting with ways to preserve screen real estate. That's important for an always-on display since that feature only uses specific portions of the screen to preserve power.
iOS 16's new lock screen widgets are another potential clue, since they feel more akin to Apple Watch complications and are therefore more glanceable. Some Android phones have similar widgets on their own always-on displays.
During the WWDC, Apple showed someone tapping and holding on the dog in a photo and lifting it from the background to share in a message. It's part of a revamped Visual Lookup.
Apple
Visual Lookup could mean a more powerful Cinematic mode
One of iOS 16's more subtle features is revamped Visual Lookup which can identify objects, people, pets and landmarks in photos and provide additional information or context. A nifty addition this year is the ability to tap on any photo to remove the background. You can literally tap-and-lift a foreground subject like a person or a dog away from the background and add the "cutout" to other apps to share or create a collage.
I could see Cinematic mode getting a boost from the machine learning that powers the new Visual Lookup tap-and-lift tool. That machine learning acceleration combined with a likely new A16 Bionic chip could make Cinematic mode videos look better. Subjects could be more reliably "cutout" and backgrounds have more of a consistent out-of-focus look. Apple could also use the separation technology to make Cinematic mode do more things akin to Portrait mode like replace the background for a black color or place your subject against a white backdrop.
Cinematic mode made its debut on the iPhone 13 series and is basically Apple's take on a Portrait mode for video. While Cinematic mode is fun to use, the results can be hit or miss. It's reminiscent of when Apple introduced Portrait mode with the iPhone 7 Plus: Initially it worked but wasn't great. Over several years, Apple improved Portrait mode to the point where it's actually quite wonderful.
A Pro mode for the Camera app
Without even reading a single rumor, you could guess that the cameras on the iPhone 14 series will be better than those on the iPhone 13 lineup. A lot of those improvements will likely come from computational photography-powered features such as SmartHDR and Deep Fusion, which directly correlate to the chip powering the phone. So an iPhone 14 running on an A16 chip would theoretically have new camera features or improved photo processing techniques that the iPhone 13 lacks.
Apple's addition of a customizable lock screen in iOS 16 has me hopeful for an overhaul to the Camera app on the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. New professional features like ProRaw and ProRes video recording can make the Camera app interface feel a bit cramped. Perhaps there could be a Pro mode that can be toggled on and off and provide shortcuts to tweak camera settings on the fly. Or maybe Apple will clean up the Camera app's interface to make it more visually appealing.
Apple ProRes debuted on the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max in 2021.
Patrick Holland/CNET
Don't get me wrong, the iPhone still has one of the best Camera apps on any phone sold today. But much like a family can outgrow a house, the number of features and modes is starting to grow past the app's original intent.
This is all speculation, however, and we won't know anything about the next iPhone until Apple announces it. But if there's one certainty, it's that it will run iOS 16.

AirPods Pro: $170
While they've been out a while and the AirPods Pro 2 should be coming sometime in 2022, the Apple AirPods Pro remain a great pair of true wireless earphones. That's largely due to their winning design and fit, good sound, effective noise canceling and spatial audio, which is a virtual-sound mode for watching movies and TV shows. They're also excellent for making voice calls and have a top-notch transparency mode. Also worth noting: They're IPX4 splashproof, so they're suitable for sporting activities, though for a more secure fit you may want to invest in third-party foam ear tips, which are grippier than the tips Apple includes.
Their lowest price to date was $159 (in late 2021), but $170 is the lowest we've seen them for in 2022.
