Apple's M2 Chip Gives New MacBook Air a Speed Boost

Apple on Monday debuted the new M2 processor, a chip that improves core processing performance 18% over the M1 without hurting battery life in the company's new MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro laptops.

The 18% speed boost comes from the M2's redesigned central processing units. The processor has four fast CPU cores and four efficient cores, a hybrid approach drawn from the smartphone world. By redesigning the graphics processing units and increasing their count up to a maximum of 10 instead of eight for the M1, GPU performance is 35% faster. Overall, the new MacBook Air is 20% faster at Photoshop image editing and 38% faster at Final Cut Pro video editing, Apple said.

"We continue to have a relentless focus on power-efficient performance," Johny Srouji, Apple hardware team leader, said at the Worldwide Developers Conference.

Power efficiency is crucial to shrinking laptops since the biggest component is the battery. The new MacBook Airs take up 20% less volume but still have a long, 18-hour battery life, Apple said. The company also is using the M2 in a new 13-inch MacBook Pro.

Apple's M2 processor has large amounts of high-speed cache memory built onto the chip itself and up to 24MB of regular memory included in the chip package, two attributes that should boost performance over Apple's 2020-era M1.

The M2 processor also has a significant memory boost, reaching up to 24GB instead of 16GB for the M1. Memory is important, especially as software gets bigger and laptops have years-long lifespans. M series chips build memory directly into the processor package for fast performance, but it's not upgradable.

Apple debuted the M1 at 2020's WWDC and began shipping it later that year in the earlier version of the MacBook Air. The M1, along with beefier successors called the M1 Pro, M1 Max and M1 Ultra, struck an effective balance between performance and battery life and earned strong reviews.

The M2 doubles down on the same balanced approach, offering updated processing cores that are variants of the chips at the heart of newer iPhones. The new chips continue the gradual ejection of Intel processors from the Mac family of personal computers and could enable the last Intel-powered member, the Mac Pro, to switch to Apple chips.

Designing processors is an expensive, difficult undertaking. But with the M series chips, Apple takes advantage of the A series chip design work it already does for its iPhones and iPads, then pays Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. to build the chips on its advanced product lines. 

The M2 is built on TSMC's 5nm (5 nanometer) manufacturing process, but it's an improved version to the one used for the M1. TSMC is working on a more advanced 3nm process that should let customers squeeze in somewhat more transistors, the core electronics elements that process data on a chip.

The M2 has 20 billion transistors, a 25% increase over the M1, Apple said.

One use of the new transistors is the increased GPU count. Another is an upgraded neural engine -- a chip block used to accelerate artificial intelligence workloads. The new 16-core neural engine can perform 15.8 trillion operations per second, Apple said, a 40% speed boost.

With its own chips, Apple gets more control over the technology foundation of its products -- a principle important to Chief Executive Tim Cook. That includes both the processor itself, with specific features like AI acceleration, video encoding, and security, and the software Apple writes to take advantage of those features.

Apple's M series and A series chips are members of the Arm processor family. UK-based Arm licenses designs that companies can customize to varying degrees. Arm chips from Qualcomm, Apple, MediaTek, Samsung, Google and others power just about every smartphone for sale.

Intel has struggled over most of the last decade with problems advancing its manufacturing. That stalled its progress while Apple, Qualcomm, AMD, Nvidia and other Intel rivals took advantage of TSMC's manufacturing progress.

Because Apple doesn't offer its chips to others, and because the majority of PCs use Intel processors, Intel is somewhat insulated from Apple's shift. Intel is working to modernize its manufacturing, spending tens of billions of dollars on new chipmaking fabs. Intel aims to reclaim its lead over rivals TSMC and Samsung in 2024.

Intel's newest PC processor, code-named Alder Lake, embraces the same mix of high-performance and high-efficiency CPU cores found in smartphone chips and Apple's M series chips. Future products are designed to improve GPU performance, in particular with Intel's renewed focus on high-end graphics that's designed to wean the company from reliance on AMD and Nvidia. That's important for one big market, gaming, where PCs with Intel and AMD processors are much more widely used than Macs.

If you want a glimpse of where the processor business is headed, check out Apple's new M1 Ultra processor.

To deliver speed and performance, the consumer electronics giant married two of its older M1 Max chips using advancements in a once humble aspect of chipmaking called packaging. Packaging no longer just provides a protective housing but now also offers cutting-edge communication links.

By combining the two chips, Apple's M1 Ultra delivers a stunning 114 billion transistors that make up 20 processing cores and 64 graphics cores. By comparison, AMD Ryzen desktop processors use something like a tenth that number of transistors.

The M1 Ultra highlights the progress chipmakers have achieved in keeping Moore's Law alive. A dictum in the chip industry, Moore's Law predicts that the number of transistors on chips doubles every two years. Transistors, the basic circuit elements that process data, have been harder to miniaturize, which has slowed the progress initially charted by chip pioneer and Intel co-founder Gordon Moore. Advanced packaging offers a new way to bump up those transistor counts.

Apple isn't the only company working on advanced packaging technology to link chips together.  Intel, AMD and Nvidia also have technology to combine multiple chip elements, called dies or chiplets, into a single larger processor. The M1 Ultra is arguably the most advanced example of the concept so far, but it won't be the last.

"You'll see it in mainstream PCs over time," said Tech Insights analyst Linley Gwennap, not just the Mac Studio systems costing $4,000 and up.

Chip packaging advances

Packaging has been around for as long as chips have been. Initially, it involved a housing to protect a processor and provide it with the electrical links to memory, communications and other elements of a computer. Over the years, it's gotten more and more complex. Now chipmakers see advanced packaging as a crucial element in sustaining computing progress.

Apple's UltraFusion, the name of its packaging technology, uses a narrow silicon slice called an interposer that resides beneath the two M1 Max chips, linking them with 10,000 wires that can carry 2.5 terabytes of data per second over a very short distance. That enormous speed is necessary so chip cores on one die can reach memory that's connected to the other. Graphics processing units in particular have an insatiable appetite for data stored in memory.

Interposers historically have been large and expensive. Apple's custom approach involves a narrower slice that only traverses the connecting edges of the M1 Max chips.

Intel has developed a similar packaging technology, which it calls Embedded Multi-Die Interconnect Bridge. Intel hasn't used EMIB in any chips that are on the market yet but expects to begin selling one, a high-end server chip codenamed Sapphire Rapids, later this year. Sapphire Rapids will use EMIB to link four chips and four big memory modules, too.

UltraFusion's more expensive, densely packed wires lets Apple send data from one die to another roughly twice as fast as Intel does with Sapphire Rapids, said Real World Technologies analyst David Kanter.

Advanced packaging doesn't solve every problem. At twice the size of an M1 Max, the M1 Ultra consumes about twice the power and throws off twice the waste heat, a big design constraint for computers. Don't expect to see it in laptops.

Mix and match chiplet assembly is unusual today, but it'll become more ordinary. An alliance of almost all the world's top chipmakers should make it easier by developing standardized interfaces chiplets use to talk to each other.

Advanced chip packaging on the way

Apple's M1 Ultra is only one instance of new packaging methods. Larger interposers have been used for years, in particular by a very flexible but very expensive type of chip called an FPGA. More recently, it's taken steps toward the mainstream.

Intel's Sapphire Rapids chip, the next-gen Xeon model for the thousands of servers that pack data centers from companies like Google and Facebook, will include a model with four chips married into one. Its chiplets are connected with EMIB, which like interposers is a packaging approach called 2.5D since it's a step beyond the purely two-dimensional packaging used before.

Last year, AMD Chief Executive Lisa Su showed off a packaging technology that stacks chiplets one atop another, called 3D packaging. The first chips using the technology will be Ryzen 7 5800X3D gaming PC chips expected in coming weeks. AMD uses its approach, called 3D V-Cache, to bond high-speed memory chips into a processor complex for a 15% performance boost compared with conventional data links.

Intel, too, plans to use its 3D stacking technology, called Foveros, with 2023 PC chips code named Meteor Lake.

Both EMIB and Foveros also figure into this year's Ponte Vecchio processor, Intel's gargantuan graphics and AI chip geared for the Energy Department's Aurora supercomputer. "Ponte Vecchio is the apotheosis of advanced packaging," Kanter said. 

Advanced packaging's high costs

Ponte Vecchio also embodies one of the problems of advanced packaging: expense. Designing, sourcing, aligning and bonding chiplets all adds complexity and expense to chip manufacturing. That means extra cost.

Apple's Mac Studio computer is a case in point. It has a starting cost of $1,999 with the M1 Max processor but costs $3,999 with the M1 Ultra. If you want the most powerful version of the chip, with 64 GPUs, add another $1,000 to the price tag.

"Yes, it's possible to keep Moore's Law going, to continue to pack more and more transistors into a package, but we're not doing anything to address the cost," Tech Insights' Gwennap said. "A lot of practical issues need to be worked out before we get to this utopia where you buy a lot of chiplets, plug them together, and everything just works."

The M1 Pro-powered MacBook Pro models are among the best MacBooks Apple offers but the blend of power and portability they provide doesn't come cheap. Though Apple tends not to offer any MacBook deals directly, there are plenty of places to buy its laptops that do. And right now, Amazon and Best Buy are offering some of the best prices to date on both the 14-inch and 16-inch variants, with discounts as steep as $400. 

If you're in the market for a big-screen laptop, the 16-inch MacBook Pro is the largest Apple makes. It features a gorgeous 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display with ProMotion and 1,600 nits of peak brightness. The machines seeing the steep $400 discount at both retailers are powered by Apple's M1 Pro chip with a 10‑core CPU, 16‑core GPU and 16GB of RAM. Both 512GB and 1TB models have prices slashed right now. If you particularly need the extra power afforded by Apple's M1 Max chip, higher-spec configurations are available with the same $400 markdown but only via Best Buy.

On the smaller side, the more portable 14-inch MacBook Pro is available for as little as $1,599 at both retailers, which is also $400 off the regular price for the 512GB model. Go for the 1TB version and you'll save $400 as well. Both machines are running Apple's M1 Pro chip with 16GB of RAM.

There's no telling how long these deals will last, so it's best to place your order as soon as possible if you want to get in on the current savings.

In a break from recent high-concept, high-flash games such as Deathloop or Ratchet & Clank, Diablo II: Resurrected is delightfully retro in spirit and practice. It's a nearly 1:1 remake of the original Diablo II, first released for PCs and Macs in 2000. The game is so faithful to the original that you can flick the enhanced graphics on and off at will without missing a beat. 

At first, I didn't love that concept. In a heated Slack convo a few weeks ago, I argued, "There's a difference between a remake that creates a new, original work -- like Scarface (1932) vs. Scarface (1983) -- and something like Gus Van Sant's lazy shot-for-shot Psycho (1998) remake." After playing a bit in both the beta and final version game, I've come to appreciate Resurrected's retro pleasures, although a game from 20 years ago is going to feel dated no matter what. 

Diablo II: Resurrected feels like it could be a perfect Apple Arcade game, or a fun, casual game for regular work-from-home laptops. In practice, the required PC specs are reasonable, but not as flexible as something like Fortnite, which can run (if roughly) on your non-gaming laptop's integrated graphics.

Note there are no system specs listed for Macs. Even though the original Diablo II was popular on Macs for many years, the new version is PC-only (plus Xbox, PlayStation and Switch, of course). If you're looking to try the old 2000-era game on your Mac, Blizzard has instructions here. 

That's too bad, because I think this game would have been perfect for a 24-inch iMac, and I've been able to play games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Hades perfectly fine on an M1 MacBook Air

You're also out of luck if you're trying to play on a laptop without a dedicated Nvidia or AMD graphics card. The game does not support even Intel's better Iris GPUs. In most cases, it'll simply refuse to launch, as noted by many beta testers in the game's beta forums. 

I tried my luck on three Windows PCs. On a desktop with an Intel Core i7-6700 and a single Nvidia 1080 GPU, it ran great, even at 4K resolution (yes, it was hooked up to my TV). Also great was a gaming laptop with an Intel Core i7-8750 and a Nvidia 2080 Max-Q GPU. But a Dell XPS 13 with an Intel Core i7-1065G7 and Intel integrated Iris Plus graphics was a no-go. The game would simply pop up an error message when I tried to launch it. On the same Dell, I was able to download and play Diablo 3 on it perfectly fine. 

The lowest-end compatible Nvidia GeForce 660 GPU is about 10 years old at this point, and technically it's still faster than the best integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics, although only by a little. Most laptops, even high-end ones, don't include dedicated Nvidia or AMD graphics hardware, unless they're intended for gaming or creative work. 

That means that even if you're an old-school Diablo II fan, one who's been waiting years to get back into the fight, Diablo II: Resurrected probably isn't going to run on your work-from-home laptop. Fortunately, you can always play it on a console instead.

MSI's top-end 17-inch Raider GE76 gaming laptop comes with state-of-the-art components that let it fly. It's stacked with an Intel Core i9-12900HK CPU and Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti GPU. That processor is the newest Intel mobile Alder Lake architecture, which splits the cores into performance-optimized and efficiency-optimized (like Apple's M1 chips). And while the RTX 3080 Ti is just a new iteration of Nvidia's top mobile GPU, the MSI shows how well it performs when you push it -- and not even to the max -- in a system that allows it to draw full power. 

In other words, the components are performing better than they would on a laptop with a pretty thin-and-light design; those have to compromise on power for the sake of cooling, battery size and AC adapter size. The downside is that the Raider is a lot more traditional. It also lacks Nvidia's Advanced Optimus, which is better at juggling the internal and discrete GPUs than the older version of Optimus used in the Raider GE76. 

The Raider GE76 comes in about seven different configurations that range in price from $1,599 (with an i7-12700H, RTX 3060 and 1080p 360Hz display) to $4,199 (i9-12900HK, RTX 3080 Ti and 4K 120Hz display). Our test system configuration isn't available here, but the closest option, with an i9-12900HK, RTX 3080 Ti and 1440p 240Hz display for $3,999 is actually better; 4K can be overkill for 17 inches and 1080p is OK, but QHD is just right. (Since exchange-rate conversions bear no relation to the regional pricing, I haven't included them.)

It's pretty pricey overall, and currently still in preorder, since it's not shipping until around late March. It's definitely worth waiting to see what's out there around the same time.

The laptop's screen isn't on the GPU bus, so the battery life is highly dependent on whether you remember to switch into hybrid mode. (In hybrid mode, the rendering and acceleration are performed by the Nvidia GPU and passed over the system bus to the CPU to render to the screen, which might make it a bit slower.) That means you have to manually force it to use the discrete graphics -- it can't toggle back and forth intelligently and automatically, and you have to reboot to switch. MSI does have a utility that automatically switches in and out of "extreme" mode as you launch games. 

My performance test results place it as best in class -- or close -- across the board, and by a significant margin in some cases. Single-core speed, traditionally Intel's strong point, is also impressive. When you combine all the advances in GPU and CPU in the system, it becomes a powerhouse for video editing (though if you really want to you probably want a better screen than the run-of-the-mill model I tested, which is optimized for refresh rate).

You can overclock the GPU and VRAM up to 200MHz each via MSI's utility. Simply bumping the GPU up by 100MHz lifted performance on Rift Breaker's GPU test and FireStrike Ultra by about 6%, and Port Royal (which measures Nvidia's RTX ray-tracing performance) by about 7%. That's quite good and means there's room for more uplift, as long as you're willing to put up with the fan noise.

The touchpad feels a little small relative to the size of the laptop.

This isn't really a "laptop" laptop. It's a desktop replacement, so I'm not sure how important a little extra battery life is. Still, when you let the system use its intelligent power handling (without forcing it into save-battery-at-all-costs mode) it lasted about 5 to 6 hours streaming video continuously over Wi-Fi, which is unusually long for a traditional 17-inch gaming system. It's big and relatively heavy, with one of those mondo power bricks that add another two pounds to the carry weight. It can also get pretty loud, even in hybrid mode, though it doesn't seem to run particularly hot. 

While it performs exceptionally well on all counts, that's due to all the new components in it, and this is the first time we've tested them. I do expect to see a lot of systems that perform comparably as 2022 wears on.

Among the laptop's performance-related perks is support for DirectStorage, Microsoft's programming interface for high-bandwidth SSD file operations in Windows (and the Xbox Series X/S), that, combined with its Samsung SSD and PCIe 4 bus, delivers quite a nice score of 2,802 on 3DMark's SSD performance test (we're still building our database of comparison numbers). 

A lot of swings, some misses

MSI's also one of the first companies to partner with BlueStacks for its mobile-gaming-on-laptop technology. Incorporated into its MSI App Player, it theoretically lets you play Android games on the laptop as if they were written for a PC -- a bigger screen, high-power processing, full controller support and more.

But it's really hit and miss, at least on the MSI. For instance, Dead Cells, which is listed on BlueStacks' site as a compatible game, wouldn't run. Little Adventures did, but when I rotated it to landscape to take advantage of the bigger screen, it literally just rotated the game, leaving it lying on its side. The App Player is simply emulating a phone -- if the game doesn't support landscape or a controller, it won't. And it doesn't tell you that; you just have to discover by trial and error. The Home screen for the player shows BlueStacks-optimized games, but at least a casual look-through didn't turn up a single A-lister.

Given the size of the laptop, the touchpad is too small, and I'm finding it intermittently nonresponsive. Plus, the SteelSeries keyboard feels mushy; quiet, but more like gel than membrane. I do like the laptop's lighting design, but I'm a sucker for a lightbar (as well as underglow). 

And MSI touts the full HD (1080p) webcam, but there's a lot more to a good webcam than resolution. Most of the best have a lot of supporting intelligence to deliver decent autoexposure and white balance at the very least, but this one's pretty meh, even in controlled lighting. It should be fine for basic videoconferencing, but you may want to buy a better external one if you care about image and especially if you plan to stream.

If you're in the market for a speedy upgrade over whatever you're gaming on now, the MSI Raider GE76 definitely delivers -- as long as you're willing to plonk down a lot of money before seeing what the rest of the competition does with similar components, or what arrives a little later this year in a thinner-and-lighter package (between March and June) than the Raider line.

Apple's iPhone 13 leads to company's largest revenue and profit in history, despite parts shortages

Apple's iPhone marked its 15th year on the market with its strongest sales ever, helping push the tech giant's sales and profits to all-time highs despite the continued spread of the coronavirus pandemic and supply chain constraints.

The demand for Apple's smartphone, in a line ranging from the $699 iPhone 13 Mini to the $1,099 iPhone 13 Pro Max, was so high during the three months ending in December, that sales rose more than 9%, to $71.6 billion. That was more than half the company's overall revenue, which itself rose to $123.94 billion, up double digits from last year.

Apple CEO Tim Cook noted that the iPhone held top market-share spots around the world, including in the US and Australia, where it was among the top five, China, where it was among the top four, and the UK, where it nabbed two of the top three slots. 

"We knew that we had the beginnings of something fundamentally transformative," Cook said in a conference call with analysts, remarking on the iPhone's 2007 launch. "None of us could have predicted the incredible and meaningful impact it would have on all of our lives."

Apple's stock rose more than 3%, to $163.73 per share, after closing regular trading roughly flat for the day. Investors pushed the company's shares above $3 trillion for a short period earlier this month before they fell about 12% with broader market fluctuations.

Apple's latest financial disclosures are just the most recent sign of how the coronavirus pandemic has affected the world economy in radically different ways. Though many businesses are struggling, our reliance on big tech appears to be fueling increased financial performance across the industry. But the success isn't the same for all these companies.

Microsoft, which announced last week that it plans to buy game maker Activision Blizzard for an eye-watering $68.7 billion, said its second fiscal quarter sales jumped 20%, while profits rose 21%. Netflix, meanwhile, said its subscriber base grew slower than expected during the holidays. Crucially, the company forecast subscriber growth far below analyst expectations, prompting its stock to plummet 25% after the news.

Even Apple had a dark spot in its report. The company's CFO, Luca Maestri, said continued supply chain issues cost Apple more than $6 billion in sales over the holidays, something he hopes will decrease by March.

"The level of constraint will depend a lot on other companies -- what will be the demand for chips from other companies and other industries. It's difficult for us to predict, so we try to focus on the short term," he told Reuters in an interview Thursday.

Apple said iPad sales in particular were affected, marking an uncharacteristic drop of 14% during the holidays amid "very significant" supply shortages and in spite of "very strong" demand across its product line.

"Despite the supply shortages, our installed base of iPads reached a new all-time high during the quarter," Maestri said on the conference call with analysts. He added that about half the customers purchasing an iPad were new to the product.

The iPhone wasn't Apple's only bright spot. The company said sales of its Mac computers were also strong, rising more than 25%, to nearly $10.9 billion, bolstered by newly redesigned MacBook Pro laptops. Apple said much of the customer demand is in response to the new M1 chip, meant to replace the microprocessing brains that Apple used to rely on from Intel. Cook said that's helped bring in new customers, in addition to upgraders.

"Customer satisfaction is off the charts," Cook said.

Apple's "wearables, home and accessories" division, which handles things like AirPods and HomePods, posted sales of more more than $14.7 billion, up more than 13%. And its services business, which oversees the $5 per month Apple TV Plus subscription service and the new $10 per month Apple Fitness Plus offering, saw sales rise to more than $19.5 billion. Apple said it now counts 785 million paid subscriptions across its business lines.

All told, Apple said it notched profits of nearly $34.6 billion, up 20% from the same period last year. That translates to $2.10 per share in profit, off $123.9 billion in overall revenue, which itself was up more than 11% from the $111.44 billion reported last year. It was also enough to beat average analyst estimates, which were $1.89 per share in profits on $118.66 billion in revenue, according to surveys published by Yahoo Finance.

All that has contributed to Apple's cash pile, which is now more than $202 billion.

Still about the iPhone

Though Apple's various businesses are reporting record demand, the iPhone is still the company's most important product. It represented nearly 58% of Apple's overall revenue, and it's an anchoring product that many of the company's most popular accessories are built around, including the AirPods and the Apple Watch.

But Apple has also faced repeated questions about how to keep the product fresh despite annual updates. The iPhone 13's key improvements included its battery life, screen quality and cameras. The iPhone 12, meanwhile, offered the company's first major redesign in years, as well as the first inclusion of 5G ultrafast wireless and newly hardened front glass, which Apple called "ceramic shield."

The iPhone has become "an integral part of so many people's lives now more than ever," Cook said, noting that the active install base continues to grow, currently sitting at an all-time high. (Apple has previously said it counts more than 1 billion active iPhones worldwide, but it has since switched to publishing counts of all active devices. Apple said it counted 1.8 billion active devices over the holidays, up from 1.65 billion the same time last year, and 1.5 billion in 2020.)

Cook added that he expects 5G wireless will continue to drive further sales as people upgrade and switch to Apple devices. "Even though this is the second product announcement that has 5G in it, we're really in the early innings of 5G," he said, noting that customer surveys outside Apple have indicated that many people still haven't upgraded. "We maintain a very optimistic view on long term."

As to the future, Cook noted that Apple has been increasing its research-and-development spending more than normal, most recently raising it more than 22% during the holidays, to $6.3 billion. "There are areas that have more than piqued our interest, and we are investing in those," he added. "There's quite a bit of investment going into things that are not on the market at this point, as there always are."
