Microsoft launched Windows 11. Now what? Essential info about the new OS

Windows 11  launched this month, and Microsoft delivered some big changes to the storied operating system, including its first name change in six years. The Windows 11 update began rolling out on Oct. 5, though it will be released in a phased approach on eligible devices. (Here's how to see whether your PC is compatible first and how to download it early if you don't want to wait.)

Read more:  Windows 11 review: Familiar but fresh

Windows 11 comes with a truckload of new features, such as the ability to download and run Android apps on your Windows PC and updates to Microsoft Teams, the Start menu and the overall look of the software, which is more clean and Mac-like in design. (Check out all of our favorite new Windows 11 features and how to use them.) But keep in mind that not all of the features are available today.

Here's everything about Windows 11, including price, compatibility, release date, how to download it and new features.

7 new features included in Windows 11

Here are a few of the standout new features in Windows 11:

  • A new, more Mac-like interface. Windows 11 features a clean design with rounded corners, pastel shades and a centered Start menu and Taskbar.
  • Integrated Android apps. Android apps will be coming to Windows 11  via the Amazon Appstore, which will be accessible from within the updated Microsoft Store. There were a couple of ways to access Android apps on Windows 10, especially if you had a Samsung Galaxy phone, but this will make it native. (Note that Android apps will not be available upon the initial release of Windows 11.)
  • Widgets. While they've been around for a while (remember desktop gadgets on Windows Vista?), including in a recent Windows 10 update, you can now access widgets directly from the Taskbar and personalize them to see whatever you'd like.
  • Microsoft Teams integration. Teams is getting a face-lift  and is pinned on the Windows 11 Taskbar, making it easier to access (and a bit more like Apple's FaceTime). You'll be able to access Teams from Windows, Mac, Android or iOS.
  • Xbox tech for better gaming. Windows 11 will get certain features found in Xbox consoles, like Auto HDR and DirectStorage, to improve gaming on your Windows PC.
  • Better virtual desktop support. Windows 11 will let you set up virtual desktops in a way that's more similar to MacOS, toggling between multiple desktops for personal, work, school or gaming use. You can also change your wallpaper on each virtual desktop.
  • Easier transition from monitor to laptop, and better multitasking. The new OS includes features called Snap Groups and Snap Layouts -- collections of the apps you're using at once that sit in the Taskbar, and can come up or be minimized at the same time for easier task switching. They also let you plug and unplug from a monitor more easily without losing where your open windows are located.

Microsoft Teams will get integrated directly into the Windows 11 Taskbar, which is now centered in the display.

Microsoft

When will you get Windows 11?

Windows 11 is now available now and will continue rolling out through mid-2022. The newer your device is, the sooner you're likely to have access to the update. The older your PC is, the longer you'll probably have to wait.

Will your computer be compatible with Windows 11?

There are a few different ways to check if your Windows 10 PC is eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 11.

You can download Microsoft's PC Health Check app to see if your device is compatible, and if not, some details as to why. You can use another open-source app called WhyNotWin11 to see if your device is compatible. Plus, here's how to check some hardware compatibility with Windows 11 without either tool.

Or go to Microsoft's website for a list of requirements. If you bought a new PC between now and the general release, that computer will also be eligible for the free upgrade.

Can I still download Windows 11 even if my computer isn't compatible?

Potentially. Even if your Windows 10 computer lacks some of the requirements for upgrading to Windows 11, you may still be able to manually download an unsupported version of the OS. The process would be similar to how many people could manually download Windows 10 free of charge. However, this version likely won't be eligible for updates from Microsoft.

New PCs will be eligible for an upgrade to Windows 11.

How do you upgrade to Windows 11?

Once Windows 11 becomes generally available, you'll download it the same way you would any new version of Windows. Most users will go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and click Check for Updates

If available, you'll see Feature update to Windows 11. Click Download and install. Remember that Microsoft is rolling out the operating system gradually, so don't panic if you don't see the option on Day 1.

Here's more information on how to download Windows 11. If you haven't yet upgraded to Windows 10, you may still be able to download Windows 10 free, too -- here's how.

Is Windows 11 free to download?

If you're already a Windows 10 user, Windows 11 will appear as a free upgrade for your machine

For more, check out every feature we wanted in Windows 11 but didn't get, everything to know about the Windows 10 May 2021 update, the best Windows 10 hidden features we've found and six simple security changes all Windows 10 users need to make.

Honda Accord, CR-V Under Investigation by NHTSA Over Phantom Braking

Honda Accord, CR-V Under Investigation by NHTSA Over Phantom Braking

Honda is facing an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration over concerns that 1.7 million of its CR-VSUVs and Accordsedans produced between 2017 and 2019 could experience phantom braking, according to a report Thursday by the Associated Press.

Phantom braking is an issue where a vehicle equipped with an automatic emergency braking system will apply the brakes without warning or provocation. This is dangerous because it can cause a loss of control and because sudden, violent applications of a vehicle's brakes can increase the likelihood of rear-end collisions and injuries, which have been reported in at least six cases with the Hondas in question.

The investigation seeks to understand not only the cause of the issue but its full scope and scale and will likely lead to a recall action. Honda says it's cooperating fully with NHTSA to get to the bottom of this issue.

Of course, Honda is far from the only company to experience phantom braking issues, with Tesla regularly being mentioned in complaints to the NHTSA. Our own experience with the problem in our long-term test Model Y has been so severe and frequent enough that it led us to recommend that our readers not buy a Tesla until the issue has been fully resolved.

We asked Honda for comment but didn't hear back in time for publication.

Oppo sets N1 swivel-cam Android phone price at $599

The Oppo N1, an Android phone with an unusual swiveling camera design, now has a price: $599.

The Chinese phone maker announced the price on Google+ on Sunday, along with a precise date, December 10, when it'll start taking orders. In Europe, the phone will cost 449 euros.

The phone is notable for its use of a camera module that can be rotated to point in different directions compared to the screen. It's also got a touch-sensitive patch on the back that people can use for scrolling without touching the front of the screen. And it's capable of running the CyanogenMod version of Android, but it ships with Oppo's own Color OS, which is a based on Android 4.2, aka Jelly Bean. However, it can't use the newer LTE high-speed networking technology.

The camera can be operated with a remote control and can take 8-second long-exposure photos, too.

The N1 has a 5.9-inch 1080p display, 16GB of storage, a 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor, a 13-megapixel camera with a six-element lens, and a 3610mAh battery. It can use 850/900/1800/1900MHz GSM frequencies and 850/900/1700/1900/2100MHz WCDMA frequencies. Oppo didn't disclose a price for a planned 32GB model.

Fight Android malware by quitting Google Play and using F-Droid for Android apps

Fight Android malware by quitting Google Play and using F-Droid for Android apps

Things haven't been looking great for Android users' privacy recently. After Google purged 50 malicious apps from its Play store with upward of 25 million downloads a couple of years back, another 200 Android apps were found infected with malware in March, followed by July's discovery of 1,000-plus Android apps harvesting data even after you deny permissions and a Chrome extension security meltdown in May.

It's a good time to check your phone for malicious apps. And an even better time to take F-Droid for a spin, the security-focused Android app marketplace that replaces the Google Play store with a catalog of installable Fully Open Source Software (FOSS).

Once you've done that, consider the words of Serge Egelman, the director of usable security and privacy research the International Computer Science Institute, which found 1,325 malicious Android apps.

"Fundamentally, consumers have very few tools and cues that they can use to reasonably control their privacy and make decisions about it," Egelman said earlier this year. "If app developers can just circumvent the system, then asking consumers for permission is relatively meaningless."

With so few tools, you can consider wielding one of the most effective ones -- opting out of the Google Play store.

Is F-Droid safe?

While Google Play promises to scan its apps, the outbreak of malware found in their software proves that no app repository is ever 100% safe.

But as an open-source project, F-Droid shows us their math: None of the applications found within the catalog include tracking or hidden costs, a community of developers are easily able to examine source code to spot suspicious behavior and F-Droid has rigorously documented its own external security audits and has established a history of addressing vulnerabilities. If F-Droid sees apps with potentially non-compliant features, they get flagged.

Not incidentally, sticking purely to open source apps means an F-Droid app left unsupported by a developer is not necessarily a death sentence for any personal data you might want to save.

On the privacy front, F-Droid has numerous precautions: It sends everything over HTTPS, avoids leaking app search and browsing data, supports Tor, and includes all supported languages in its metadata so its servers don't even know what language you're speaking.

With an eye toward security concerns, CNET previously reconsidered its recommendations on sideloading third-party Android apps or APK (Android's app file-package that includes executables comparable to Windows' EXE files) which aren't officially supported by Google. But $5 billion worth of antitrust damages have a way of putting things into perspective.

Times have changed. Besides F-Droid, there are other non-Google app store competitors not seen on the Play store, including Amazon'sAppstore and Samsung'sGalaxy Apps. And they all operate with varying degrees of data security. Staying safe is no longer a matter of sticking with the biggest brands on the block; it's about upping your scrutiny and layering your security.

F-Droid is among the most scrutinized Play store alternatives we can advise. So have a critical look at its security model to judge F-Droid for yourself, and review its most recent security audit.

How do I install F-Droid?

If you want to download F-Droid, you won't find it on the Play store. Instead, you can download it directly from the F-Droid site. Once prompted by your phone, confirm installation and you're ready to browse. If you want a visual tour of the two-click install, PrivacyPro has a screenshotted walkthrough (along with a list of their favorite starter apps).

For those interested in finding the right privacy-focused apps, have a look at the F-Droid-approved Guardian Project. Their easy-to-use security app suite is the perfect place to begin building your data-safe mobile usage routine.

If you're using an older version of Android, you'll need to allow software from unknown sources via System Settings. But if you're running Android 8 Oreo (or later), you've got a handy new setting we recommend enabling which allows only certain apps (like F-Droid and the Play store) to install APKs. This keeps other applications such as email clients from silently installing malware via hijacked attachments.

We recommend that F-Droid adopters stick to APKs found F-Droid's app store, in order to ensure you're installing only those apps which have cleared a strict security screening. If you'd like to use both F-Droid and the Play store, we recommend enabling Google Play Protect if you haven't already.

It's not a magic shield, but it acts as a first line of defense by tapping into Android's suite of built-in security controls to screen apps you install from both inside and outside of the Play store. But, Play Protect isn't enough. You should also use at least one of the other 16 non-Google security apps that outperformed Play Protect when AV Test fired 18,000 rounds of malware at them during last year's marathon.

F-Droid pros

  • Open source software offers better overall security odds.
  • A stringent security auditing process for apps ensure you don't get tracked.
  • No hidden costs in apps, and greater customization of each app.

F-Droid cons

  • Without a visible rating system, you may have to poke around and experiment to find the best apps.
  • There are only about 2,600 apps in F-Droid, compared to more than 2.5 million in the Play store. Worth noting here is a Play store filtration app approved by F-Droid, Yalp. It allows you to search Play store apps while filtering out those with ads, hidden costs and a history of blacklisting, and then directly download each app's APK files from the Play store.
  • Most of your F-Droid apps will have to be manually updated, while Play store apps tend to be automatically updated.

Google's position

For those looking to stay within the bounds of the Play store, Android's 31-page official 2019 security and privacy report may offer reason for optimism. Despite a reported 0.02% to 0.04% year-on increase in potentially harmful applications (PHAs) downloaded from the Play store, Google attributes much of this increase to improvements in its own tracking methods, including the wider implementation of Play Protect which it says now scans over 50 billion apps every day across more than 2 billion devices. Google has also taken seemingly good faith action in bouncing hundreds of thousands of malicious apps from its ranks, and says it tightened security further by rejecting 55% more apps' requests to join the Play store.

This year's report also found that "only 0.08% of devices that exclusively used Google Play had one or more PHAs installed (unchanged from last year). In contrast, 0.68% of devices that installed apps from outside of Google Play were affected by one or more PHAs in 2018."

CNET asked what portion of that 0.68% were F-Droid users, and whether Google had any further security advice for users who want to try out apps outside of the Play store. Google responded by redirecting CNET to a help center article, and advised users to download apps from the Google Play store to avoid risks to personal information.

Editors' note: While using a third-party app store like F-Droid to get apps rather than the Google Play store can give you more control and better privacy and security, it also takes more diligence. It's for power users. Installing any third-party apps on Android is still something you have to do at your own risk. So, make sure you're comfortable taking that risk.

13 fun facts about Encanto, from Mirabel's gift to hidden Easter eggs

Whaddya mean, we don't talk about Bruno? These days, it feels like everyone's doing just that. Disney's hit animated musical Encanto came out in theaters in November and now is available on Disney Plus. The coronavirus pandemic might have limited Encanto's time in theaters, but on Disney Plus, it can be watched over and over again. And with its catchy Lin-Manuel Miranda songs such as We Don't Talk About Bruno and Surface Pressure, it's easy to do just that.

If you're spending an inordinate amount of time hanging out in the world of Encanto, here are 13 fun facts you might not know about the world of the magical Madrigal family.

Warning: Spoilers for Encanto ahead.

What does the title Encanto mean?

You can translate "encanto" from the Spanish to mean charm, or think of it as allure, or enchantment. Not only is the casita in Encanto enchanted with magic, but the entire Madrigal family carries with them that allure and sheer joy.

Lin-Manuel Miranda inspired many Bruno memes

Actor John Leguizamo voices Bruno, the Madrigal member the family doesn't talk about (except that they totally do). The Madrigals are a Colombian family, and Leguizamo himself was born in BogotĆ”, Colombia, so the casting seems spot-on there. But many fans saw a resemblance between Bruno and songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda, in both appearance and the importance of his role. While Miranda hasn't publicly said he ever thought of playing the role himself, the idea of him playing the part has inspired plenty of memes.

"I just saw a TikTok of a guy who said Bruno Madrigal looks like Lin-Manuel Miranda if Hamilton never made it to Broadway," tweeted one fan.

Said another, "How many people do ya think it took to hold Lin back from voicing Bruno?"

Bruno is hiding in the movie poster

Look carefully at the poster for Encanto, crowded with the Madrigal family. Isn't that ... yep, it's Bruno, the mysterious Madrigal the family doesn't like to discuss, hiding under his green cloak in the far left part of the poster, next to a tree trunk.

Can you find Bruno? Hint: Look by the tree on the far left.

Disney

Beauty and the Beast inspired the opening song

Remember the opening number from 1991's Beauty and the Beast, in which Belle whirls through her village singing about the people she knows there? That concept inspired Miranda's opening number in Encanto, The Family Madrigal, in which Mirabel introduces her magical relatives and their powers.

"I was really inspired by Beauty and the Beast, Belle, for our opening number," Miranda told the Los Angeles Times. "We wanted to get the complexity of a family on screen. And that means getting our arms around them, not letting them get winnowed away in the story process where you tend to focus on the main character and their quest. We have to be super clear about who it is, how they're related, what they can do, and how that relates to our main character."

Character Mirabel stand smiling at children in her village.

Encanto is available on streaming service Disney Plus.

Disney

Mirabel's skirt pays tribute to her family members

Clothing matters in Encanto. Mirabel's family members all have a symbol somewhere on their clothing indicating their gift. (Look for the barbells on super-strong Luisa's skirt, or Pepa's sunshine earrings, fitting since her emotions control the weather.) But Mirabel, who starts the film with no gift, has them all embroidered on her skirt, including a candle for Abuela; a chameleon for shape-shifting Camilo; animals for Antonio; and more.

"My favorite detail about Encanto is that every character has a symbol of their miracle embroidered on their clothes, except for Mirabel who has symbols of her entire family," one fan notes in a tweet.

Look closely at AgustĆn's outfit, too

Mirabel's dad, AgustĆn, also reps his family in his outfit, Encanto director Jared Bush points out.

"AgustĆn incorporated his three daughters into his outfit -- flower for Isabela, one sock with Luisa's symbols, one sock in the style of Mirabel's embroidery," Bush explained in a tweet.

What is Mirabel's gift in Encanto?

Huge spoilers, but when a young Mirabel tries to receive her magical gift, nothing appears to happen. It seems that she is the Madrigal family's one Muggle, in Harry Potter terms. But in the film, when Mirabel finally is able to put her hand on a doorknob after her childhood attempt fails, it brings the magical casita of the Madrigals back to life. Perhaps her gift is the greatest one, the power to keep her family, their home and all their magical separate gifts, together and thriving.

Then again, the fact that she can't lift churches or see visions of the future is shown to be less important than her love for her family. As one witty fan pointed out on Twitter, the film shows that "Mirabel is an independent and capable person who is just as deserving of love and acceptance as the rest of her family, and putting so much focus on a singular aspect of a person's identity can be emotionally and psychologically damaging."

Yet the audience still demands to know: "OK but whats her gift tho?"

Hercules and Cerberus

In Luisa's super-catchy song Surface Pressure, she musically wonders, "Was Hercules ever like 'Yo, I don't wanna fight Cerberus?'" Cerberus is the three-headed dog who guards the gates to the underworld in Greek mythology, but this could also be a Disney movie reference. In the 1997 Disney movie Hercules, strongman Herc tames Cerberus, so this reference could be a smart reminder of that film.

Lin-Manuel's sister inspired Luisa's song

In Surface Pressure, Luisa sings of how the family's burdens are often dumped upon her without them asking, because they're used to her carrying them without complaint. The song was inspired by Miranda's own sister, Luz, who's six years older than he is.

"She takes on way more responsibility than I do -- I was very aware that I was the baby brother who got away with everything -- so Surface Pressure is very much a love letter to my sister," Miranda told The Washington Post.

And Luz indeed sounds like Luisa, even down to her abilities at a young age.

"I remember my parents woke my sister up to put together a He-Man playset for Christmas before I woke up," Miranda told Variety. "They wanted it to be fully assembled when I woke up on Christmas morning."

Go fish

In We Don't Talk About Bruno, one character appears briefly but memorably, claiming Bruno told her that her fish would die, and his vision came true (she even displays the upside-down floating fish). That character's never introduced, but director Jared Bush told fans her name is "Senora Pezmuerto." Translation? "Pezmuerto" means "dead fish."

Mirabel's height

The lyrics to We Don't Talk About Bruno claim that he has a "seven-foot frame and rats along his back," but when Bruno shows up, he's nowhere near that tall. For some reason, fans of the film are very interested in Mirabel's height.

Director Jared Bush said in a tweet, "Here's an answer to a question I've been asked A LOT -- 'how tall is Mirabel?!' Official answer: 5'2" -- all other characters' heights are relative to hers, so that's all I got... except Bruno who has, you know, a 7-foot frame and rats along his back."

Meet Mirabel at Disney

Even though the film just came out in November, Mirabel showed up at Disney's California Adventure theme park in Anaheim, California, for the winter holidays. A Disney representative didn't immediately respond to a question about whether she'll become a permanent presence at the theme park, or whether she'll show up at Walt Disney World in Florida as well.

Nice to meet you, old friend

Voice actors don't always have to be in the same room to record their parts, and that's especially been true during the coronavirus pandemic. Lin-Manuel Miranda said he coached many of the singers through Zoom, and didn't meet many of them until the film's November premiere.

Not easy being green

Notice the importance of the color green in the film, especially connected to two specific characters. Mirabel's round eyeglasses are a bright green, and Bruno hides under a green cloak. It's no coincidence that these two have other things in common, especially when it comes to having unusual talents.

Motorola One 5G costs $445 and will have you saying 'iPhone SE who?'

Editor's note, Sept. 17: We're in the process of testing out the Motorola One 5G and will post our full review soon. You can buy the Motorola One 5G starting Friday, Sept. 18, at AT&T for $445. Motorola hasn't yet shared pricing or availability for the Verizon version.

With affordable and feature-packed offerings like the Moto G Stylus, G Power and G Fast, it's clear that Motorola thrives in the budget end of the phone market. Now with the new Motorola One 5G though, the Chicago-based company finally figured out a way to combine its budget know-how with 5G connectivity -- without the use of an additional accessory or Motorola Mod Ć  la Moto Z4 and Z3.

In the US, the majority of 5G phones are expensive. The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra costs $1,300, the OnePlus 8 Pro starts at $900 and Motorola's own Edge Plus is $1,000. Even the more affordable midtier 5G phones like the LG Velvet, Galaxy A71, Motorola Edge and OnePlus 8 cost about $700. So it's really impressive that the Motorola One 5G costs $445 -- at least for the AT&T version. Pricing and availability for the Verizon model has not been shared.

The new phone will be available Sept. 18 on AT&T and likely later in October on Verizon. Each carrier version of the phone supports a different kind of 5G. The Verizon Motorola One 5G supports the carrier's mmWave flavor of 5G and the AT&T version will have sub-6 5G connectivity.

Like its nearly identical European sibling the Moto G 5G, the Motorola One 5G has appealing specs but also some compromises. It has a 6.7-inch full HD display and is powered by a Snapdragon 765 processor, which is the same one found in the Motorola Edge, LG Velvet and Galaxy A71. The phone also has a bunch of desirable features, including a big 5,000-mAh battery with support for TurboPower charging, a headphone jack, a 90Hz refresh rate display and six cameras (more on those below). It also has NFC for Google Pay, which is notable because previous Motorola budget phones have lacked this feature in the US. The Motorola One 5G runs Android 10 and will receive one major OS update as well as two years of security updates. That isn't as good as Samsung's promise of three years of updates for its Note 20 and new Galaxy phones, but at least you know where you stand.

But to hit that $445 price, Motorola made some compromises, just like Apple did for the $399 iPhone SE. The screen is an LCD instead of OLED, which typically draws more power and doesn't have true black colors. It only has 4GB of RAM (these days, most phones at that price range have 6GB to 8GB). Lastly, the phone has a polycarbonate (i.e. plastic) body, which isn't as premium as a glass design. None of these are necessarily deal breakers in my book, however Motorola One 5G has six -- yes, six -- cameras.

motorola-one-5g-3

If you look closely at the rear camera bump, the lens on the top right-side has a flash built around it. The idea is it helps brighten macro photos when your phone might cast a shadow over your subject.

Motorola

The One 5G has four rear cameras, including a macro camera that has one of the coolest new features I've seen in a long time. Surrounding the macro camera's lens is a ring flash to illuminate close-up photos. This is especially useful because usually when getting up close and personal with an object, I find the phone's body casts a shadow over my subject. A ring flash like this has been seen on Canon's macro lens for its M50 mirrorless camera, but this is the first time it's ever been implemented on a phone and I anticipate it'll be super handy.

As for the phone's other back cameras, the main 48-megapixel camera uses pixel binning to combine four pixels into one. This helps reduce image noise and increase brightness. There's also an ultrawide-angle camera and a 2-megapixel depth camera for portrait mode photos.

On the front are two cameras, bringing the total number of cameras on the One 5G to six. One is a standard wide-angle camera and the other is an ultrawide-angle that offers a 118-degree field of view. All of the cameras are powered by Motorola's AI, which includes auto smile capture, shot optimization that recommends different modes and settings and smart composition. This last feature automatically generates a second reframed image based on your first shot.

I'll know more about the phone once I get my hands on it and get to test it out.
