Top-notch Vietnamese software BKAV raises antivirus bar

Quang Tu Nguyen has changed the landscape of network and computer security in Vietnam. Dong Ngo/CBS Interactive

Editors note: CNET editor and Crave contributor Dong Ngo is spending the next month in his homeland of Vietnam and plans to file occasional dispatches chronicling his impressions of how technology has permeated the culture there. Click here for more of Dong's stories from abroad.

HANOI, Vietnam--If you use any Internet-connected computer in Vietnam--and there are lots of them, with Internet cafes and Wi-Fi spots abounding in any city--chances are you'll find a little red plus sign at the bottom-right corner of the screen.

That's the icon of the most popular antivirus software here. It's called BKAV.

(A bit of background: if you've recently read reviews of Internet security products by our security editor Rob Vamosi, know that I am the one who designed the methodology involved in testing these applications. It's therefore natural for me to be curious about how people in various parts of the world are protected against malicious software.)

BKAV is short for Bach Khoa AntiVirus, with "Bach Khoa" being the Vietnamese name for the Hanoi University of Technology. The software was originally developed as a hobby by Quang Tu Nguyen, a student-turned-lecturer at the school. It's currently the flagship product of Bach Khoa Internetwork Security center (BKIS), of which Quang, now 33, is director.

Quang still lectures once in awhile, but he's primarily known as the man who has changed the landscape of network and computer security in Vietnam. His creation, BKAV, is in many ways just about the best security software you can find.

I visited Quang at the BKIS headquarters, an office that somewhat resembles CNET or any other high-tech company: cubicles and lots of computer screens are everywhere. There's one big exception, however: everybody is asked to remove their shoes before entering, which is not a standard business practice in Vietnam. The company is probably the cleanest workplace I've seen here yet.

The center has about 400 employees, 300 of whom are software engineers, mostly recruited in-house from the school. They are among the brightest computer science minds in the country. According to BKIS, the BKAV security software currently enjoys about 10.5 million users and more than 110,000 downloads daily. Currently, Vietnam has about 20 million Internet users and counting (out of a population of about 85 million), according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Information and Communication.

Despite its frill-free user interface, BKAV offers highly advanced protection. Dong Ngo/CBS Interactive

The majority of security software applications feature a couple of common annoyances: they take a long time to install, they take a long time (and sometimes some difficulty) to remove, and they slow down your machine. This is because in order to protect your computer, security software needs to interfere significantly with basic operations such as reading and writing files, checking network connections, and so on. It's a challenge to develop protection software that is simple yet effective.

After a few days of trying BKAV and a few hours of talking to Quang and his engineers, I found BKAV to be arguably the only security application so far that offers both those attributes.

First off, the software took literally one second to install on my Dell XPS 1330 laptop and two seconds to completely remove, each step requiring a single mouse click. The software also uses very few system resources when not performing a scan.

If you accept the default options, you can start/stop the scanning just by using the Enter and Escape key. There are absolutely no frills in the user interface. For those who have installed and used any Windows software before and like to get things done the fastest possible way, this is a pleasant surprise. And yet this is the least impressive thing about the software.

It's common for antivirus software to remove a threat by literally removing/quarantining infected files. Technically, this is a fast way to write code that generally works well as long as the infected files are the viruses themselves.

This does, however, pose problems when the virus is sophisticated enough to add itself to a critical system file or replace the legitimate system file with a compromised version that also carries malicious commands. There is a new trend of viruses that do just that, and there are currently a few of them in the wild. Using the standard method to remove them will result in crippling the operating system, making it impossible to log in, and causing the loss of common features such as cut and paste or the ability to go on to the Internet.

(I actually sat down in the BKIS labs and tried a few known antivirus software applications against two specimens of these nasty viruses, including one identified by Symantec as Infostealer.Gampass and another identified by McAfee as Generic.dx. It's important to note that different security firms might identify the same virus differently, and sometimes a new virus can be identified as an existing virus. The applications, collectively, did detect and remove the viruses but also rendered the system unusable afterward.)

BKAV, by contrast, deals with each threat (and its variants) individually by dissecting its codes and meticulously countering exactly whatever it is the virus is designed to do. This is a lot of work, and it takes dedication. Quang and his colleagues take turns working literally around the clock to discover new threats and develop updates to counter them, typically within 24 hours.

Their effort results in two things: first, it's close to impossible for BKAV to register false detection. This is because once a threat is identified, BKAV goes deeper and scrutinizes the coding to find out exactly how it should be dealt with. This process at the same time verifies whether the detected threat is real. Second, BKAV is able to remove the malicious code without harming the system. Most of the time, you don't need to restart the computer for the cleaning to get done, either.

Unlike other software that gives you lots of flashy warnings and progress displays, BKAV takes care of threats in a rather unceremonious way. Often you wonder if your computer has actually been swept.

Taking up only roughly 13MB after installation (as opposed to hundreds of megabytes in other applications), BKAV is capable of protecting your computer against and removing all threats including viruses, trojans, spyware, rootkits, and malicious links spread through e-mail or or Yahoo chat. BKIS also offers network and enterprise protection solutions.

BKIS' technical support is available 24/7. All support is free; you just have to pay for the toll call. Dong Ngo/CBS Interactive

(Speaking of Yahoo, if you live in Vietnam, you might wonder why Yahoo isn't doing so well in the United States. Yahoo Mail and Messenger are the first choice among Vietnamese teenagers and young adults when it comes to Internet-based communication. And teens and young adults are the majority of Internet users here. Also, Yahoo 360 is by far the most popular blogging service here, and it loads much faster in Hanoi than it does in the States.)

Before this trip to Vietnam, I always had a lingering feeling that my family and friends were missing out on top-notch American online protection. Now I realize we Americans are actually the ones who having been missing out on some great software and services, but hopefully not for too much longer. Quang told me BKIS is working on making its software and services available outside of Vietnam in 2009.

In the meantime, you can download and try the free version of the BKAV software; the software comes with both Vietnamese and English interfaces. The commercial version costs only $299,000 dong ($17) for a one-year subscription, much less than the cost of its American counterparts.

Personally, I am highly impressed by how BKAV works and the way BKIS is run. It's ironic, however, that a lot of Vietnamese, mostly adults, would probably argue that BKAV is in no way comparable with other protection software solutions developed outside of Vietnam, especially in America, simply because it's made in Vietnam.

Vietnam is a super-friendly country, sometimes to the point of xenophilia, when it comes to products. Maybe that's why KFC is such a popular place. But hey, go to the fast-food joint and have an order of highly processed fried chicken and a large soda, then tell me if that's really more satisfying than a plate of spring rolls served with spicy fish sauce or an order of sticky rice sprinkled with shredded pork and crispy, roasted sliced onions.

On second thought, tastes differ, so don't tell me anything. But trust me that when it comes to BKIS, you're in good hands.

Windows 11 Draining Your Battery? Here's How to Fix It

Windows 11 Draining Your Battery? Here's How to Fix It

As you're well aware, your laptop probably won't make it through an entire day without connecting it to a power source at least once. It's the price you sometimes pay for the convenience of having a portable computer, but there are other ways to extend your battery life just a little bit more.

If you're on Windows 11, there are several tips and tricks, like stopping applications from constantly refreshing in the background or decreasing the time for your lock screen timeout, that can help conserve your PC's battery life. Here's what you need to know.

Are you still on Windows 10 and want to update? Here's what you need to do before you can download Windows 11. And if you're already running Windows 11, we can explain how to help minimize distractions and stay focused, as well as how to free up disk space when your storage is getting full.

Stop apps from refreshing in the background

Applications on your computer run in the background, which allows them to continue working even if you're not actively using them. For example, they can send you notifications when you receive a text message, email or comment on social media. However, you don't always need your apps refreshing, especially when you're low on battery, which is why you can stop them from doing so:

1. Open the Settings app and go into System.

2. Click Power & battery.

3. Under Battery click Turn onnow (you must be unplugged from a power source).

Once enabled, certain notifications and background activity will be paused to help extend your battery life.

If your battery falls under a certain percentage, the battery saver feature automatically turns on.

You can also mess with a couple of settings to improve the battery saver feature: you can change the battery percentage for when battery saver is enabled and lower your screen brightness when using battery saver.

Lower the refresh rate for your display

The refresh rate is how often the image on your screen refreshes every second: the higher the rate, the smoother the motion on your screen appears. For example, if you're playing a video game, you want the highest refresh rate possible. Unfortunately for your battery, a higher refresh rate also means more power. If you don't need a high refresh rate, you can lower it to help conserve battery:

1. Open the Settings app and click System.

2. Next, go into Display and then Advanced display.

3. Finally, change the number displayed next to Choose a refresh rate.

Depending on your laptop or desktop, you may see a different refresh rate number as your default. If you only have one refresh rate option, unfortunately there is no way for you to lower it.

Also, it's important to be aware that if you lower the refresh rate, it will affect your computer's performance. In certain instances, this may make it more difficult to do regular tasks.

Use a dark background or theme

If your Windows 11 computer has an OLED display, then it can take advantage of a dark background or theme to help improve battery life. Unlike older LCD/LED displays, each pixel is individually illuminated on an OLED display, which means that if the background is black, those pixels won't light up and use the battery.

1. Open the Settings app and click Personalization.

2. At the top of the page, choose one of the dark themes.

There are a few dark themes to choose from. Each of them will darken your background, as well as all the windows and certain apps you can use in Windows 11.

Dark themes help preserve battery on OLED displays.

If you already have a personalized dark background, you can go to Settings > Personalization > Colors > Choose your mode and select Dark from the options that appear.

Decrease time for lock screen timeout

The longer your screen is on the more energy it eats up, which is why you might want your screen to quickly turn off when you step away from your computer, whether it's for just a few minutes or an hour.

1. Open Settings and go to System

2. Next, click Power & battery.

Underneath Power you'll find several settings for turning your display off after a certain amount of inactivity. You can change the number of minutes from whatever default you have to a lower number like 1 or 2 minutes. However, you should only change the time for the settings that are for battery power (and not when it's plugged in to power), which is when you most need to conserve battery.

You can automatically turn off your screen after 1 minute of inactivity.

Today's Mortgage Rates for Aug. 22, 2022: Rates Move Up

Today's Mortgage Rates for Aug. 22, 2022: Rates Move Up

A few notable mortgage rates moved up today. The average interest rates for both 15-year fixed and 30-year fixed mortgages both saw increases. At the same time, average rates for 5/1 adjustable-rate mortgages also increased.

Though mortgage rates have been rather consistently going up since the start of this year, what happens next depends on whether inflation continues to climb or begins to retreat. Interest rates are dynamic and unpredictable -- at least on a daily or weekly basis -- and they respond to a wide variety of economic factors. Right now, they're particularly sensitive to inflation and the prospect of a US recession. With so much uncertainty in the market, if you're looking to buy a home, trying to time the market may not play to your favor. If inflation rises and rates climb, this could translate to higher interest rates and steeper monthly mortgage payments. For this reason, you may have better luck locking in a lower mortgage interest rate sooner rather than later. No matter when you decide to shop for a home, it's always a good idea to seek out multiple lenders to compare rates and fees to find the best mortgage for your specific situation.

30-year fixed-rate mortgages

The average interest rate for a standard 30-year fixed mortgage is 5.78%, which is an increase of 25 basis points from one week ago. (A basis point is equivalent to 0.01%.) The most frequently used loan term is a 30-year fixed mortgage. A 30-year fixed rate mortgage will usually have a smaller monthly payment than a 15-year one -- but usually a higher interest rate. You won't be able to pay off your house as quickly and you'll pay more interest over time, but a 30-year fixed mortgage is a good option if you're looking to minimize your monthly payment.

15-year fixed-rate mortgages

The average rate for a 15-year, fixed mortgage is 4.95%, which is an increase of 4 basis points from seven days ago. Compared to a 30-year fixed mortgage, a 15-year fixed mortgage with the same loan value and interest rate will have a higher monthly payment. But a 15-year loan will usually be the better deal, if you can afford the monthly payments. You'll usually get a lower interest rate, and you'll pay less interest in total because you're paying off your mortgage much quicker.

5/1 adjustable-rate mortgages

A 5/1 adjustable-rate mortgage has an average rate of 4.30%, a climb of 8 basis points compared to last week. With an ARM mortgage, you'll typically get a lower interest rate than a 30-year fixed mortgage for the first five years. But since the rate adjusts with the market rate, you may end up paying more after that time, as described in the terms of your loan. Because of this, an ARM could be a good option if you plan to sell or refinance your house before the rate changes. But if that's not the case, you could be on the hook for a significantly higher interest rate if the market rates change.

Mortgage rate trends

Though mortgage rates were historically low at the beginning of 2022, they have been rising somewhat steadily since then. The Federal Reserve recently raised interest rates by another 0.75 percentage points in an attempt to curb record-high inflation. The Fed has raised rates a total of four times this year, but inflation still remains high. As a general rule, when inflation is low, mortgage rates tend to be lower. When inflation is high, rates tend to be higher.

Though the Fed does not directly set mortgage rates, the central bank's policy actions influence how much you pay to finance your home loan. If you're looking to buy a house in 2022, keep in mind that the Fed has signaled it will continue to raise rates, and mortgage rates could increase as the year goes on. Whether rates follow their upward projection or begin to level out hinges on if inflation actually slows.

We use information collected by Bankrate, which is owned by the same parent company as CNET, to track rate changes over time. This table summarizes the average rates offered by lenders nationwide:

Average mortgage interest rates

Product Rate Last week Change
30-year fixed 5.78% 5.53% +0.25
15-year fixed 4.95% 4.91% +0.04
30-year jumbo mortgage rate 5.80% 5.52% +0.28
30-year mortgage refinance rate 5.76% 5.51% +0.25

Rates as of Aug. 22, 2022.

How to shop for the best mortgage rate

When you are ready to apply for a loan, you can reach out to a local mortgage broker or search online. When looking into home mortgage rates, think about your goals and current finances. A range of factors -- including your down payment, credit score, loan-to-value ratio and debt-to-income ratio -- will all affect your mortgage interest rate. Having a good credit score, a higher down payment, a low DTI, a low LTV, or any combination of those factors can help you get a lower interest rate. The interest rate isn't the only factor that affects the cost of your home — be sure to also consider other costs such as fees, closing costs, taxes and discount points. Be sure to shop around with multiple lenders -- including credit unions and online lenders in addition to local and national banks -- in order to get a mortgage that's the right fit for you.

How does the loan term impact my mortgage?

When picking a mortgage, remember to consider the loan term, or payment schedule. The most common mortgage terms are 15 years and 30 years, although 10-, 20- and 40-year mortgages also exist. Another important distinction is between fixed-rate and adjustable-rate mortgages. The interest rates in a fixed-rate mortgage are fixed for the duration of the loan. Unlike a fixed-rate mortgage, the interest rates for an adjustable-rate mortgage are only fixed for a certain amount of time (commonly five, seven or 10 years). After that, the rate fluctuates annually based on the market interest rate.

One factor to consider when choosing between a fixed-rate and adjustable-rate mortgage is how long you plan on staying in your home. Fixed-rate mortgages might be a better fit for those who plan on living in a home for a while. Fixed-rate mortgages offer more stability over time compared to adjustable-rate mortgages, but adjustable-rate mortgages might offer lower interest rates upfront. If you don't plan to keep your new home for more than three to 10 years, though, an adjustable-rate mortgage might give you a better deal. The best loan term all depends on your situation and goals, so make sure to think about what's important to you when choosing a mortgage.

AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT GPU gives gaming creators a great midlevel option

You've gotta love an industry that keeps tossing out new gaming graphics processors that get snatched out of midair before you can catch them. The latest in what I hope is the last of these launches for a while is AMD's Radeon RX 6700 XT, the new entry-level graphics card in the company's RX 6000 generation. It follows the recently launched RX 6800, 6800 XT and 6900 and the GeForce RTX 3060, Nvidia's introduced entry-level card that incorporates its latest Ampere architecture. Based on its $479 price and its overall performance, the 6700 XT competes with the similarly priced RTX 3060 Ti and RTX 3070.

The card ships March 18, with AMD offering both its own cards and third-party alternatives from all the usual suspects. It will also be available in regular retail PCs; HP has already announced that it's planning to add the card as an option in its Omen 25L and 30L desktops at the end of March, along with an AMD Ryzen 9 5900X option so you can take advantage of AMD's Smart Memory Access. AMD recently expanded SMA support down to the older Ryzen 3000 series CPUs as well.

Lori Grunin/CNET

"Available" is a moving target for graphics cards these days. Pervasive shortages due to high demand by cryptocurrency miners, the efficiency of bots at snapping them up as fast as they go on sale, pandemic-related silicon shortages and other ancillary problems have made it nearly impossible for the rest of us to get our hands on any card worth buying and at a price that even remotely reflects the true worth of it. (A direct conversion of the price is laughable in this context, but $479 is approximately £340 or AU$610.)

Nvidia attempted to address the out-of-stock problem by throttling the RTX 3060's mining-related performance, but soon after Nvidia itself accidentally circumvented the performance limiter with a driver update. (The driver was subsequently pulled.) I still expect the throttle to get hacked if the shortage goes on much longer. Which we expect.

AMD, on the other hand, is taking a more traditional supply-side approach which I don't have a lot of confidence in: working with retailers to restrict sales to one per customer, making both third-party and its own cards simultaneously available at launch, keeping its own cards on sale for a longer period (it usually stops selling its own after a certain amount of time post launch) and other tactics.

The RX 6700 XT is a strong 1440p performer, hovering around the RTX 3070's spot. It generally lags that card but occasionally pulls ahead. Its one weak area looks like ray tracing, where it falls behind even the RTX 3060 on 3DMark's DXR (DirectX ray tracing) test. Unsurprising, given that Nvidia's got a generation of experience under its belt.

But with the 6700 XT, AMD continues to maintain its overall performance advantage over Nvidia's competing consumer cards for professional graphics. It doesn't require an optimized driver (like Nvidia's Studio drivers) or proprietary API support (Nvidia CUDA). Toss in the 6700 XT's 12GB of memory, and it's an excellent choice at its nominal price for video editing, notably Premiere Pro (as measured by UL's Procyon video editing benchmark, at least). It is bigger and more power hungry than the RTX 3070, however.

In the absence of rational real-world prices or availability, it's hard to make any sort of blanket recommendation for any graphics card at the moment. As long as the Radeon RX 6700 XT's price doesn't get too high, whatever that means -- though it will likely remain lower than equivalent or faster cards -- it's a good choice for 1440p gamers and creatives on a budget. Especially if you're both.

Installing an SSD on your Mac? Don't make this mistake

If you have replaced the hard drive on your Mac with an SSD (which you should do), you already know how much faster your computer is. However, I'm going to show you how to avoid this one simple mistake that so many of us make when installing a new SSD. By default, Mac OS, unlike Windows, doesn't automatically enable the TRIM command for a self-installed SSD. (If your Mac comes with an SSD, TRIM will already be enabled.)

TRIM allows the operating system to actively inform an SSD which blocks of data are no longer in use and can be wiped internally. This helps the drive work more efficiently and leads to faster performance and most importantly, longer lifespan. You can read more about that here. The bottom line is that, in order to prolong the life of your SSD, you need to make sure TRIM is running on your Mac.

Here's how you check to see if the TRIM command is running on your Mac.

Dong Ngo/CNET

Here's how to find out if TRIM is running or not.

1. Click on the Apple icon (top-right corner) then choose About This Mac.

2. Click on System Report.

3. On the left pane of the System Information window, under Hardware navigate to SATA/SATA Express.

4. On the right pane, scroll down until you find TRIM Support. If the value is Yes, then TRIM is running -- you're all good! If the value is No, then you need to turn it on.

Here's how to turn TRIM on in a Mac.

Dong Ngo/CNET

Here's how to turn TRIM on:

Make sure you're logged into your Mac with an account that has Administrator privileges. Next:

1. Run Terminal (you can search for it with Spotlight)

2. Type in this command: sudo trimforce enable and press enter.

3. Type in the password of the account you're using, then press enter.

4. The system will display a notice, then ask you if you are sure you wish to proceed. Type in y and then press enter.

5. The system will then indicate that it will reboot and ask you if that's OK. Type y again then press enter.

Now wait for the system to restart by itself and you're done. If you check again, you will see that TRIM is now running on the system.

5 Best Online Psychiatry Services in 2022

The lack of in-person access to medical professionals at the start of the pandemic spurred some big advancements for the telehealth industry. These days, patients can receive treatment, attend follow-up appointments and even get a medical prescription all from the comfort of their homes. Patients living anywhere can jump on a quick video or phone call and get the help they need from health care providers from around the world.

The same is true for mental health professionals, who have seen significant demand for telepsychiatry services. Psychiatrists can now see patients and prescribe medicine online.

What is a psychiatrist?

Before deciding whether a psychiatrist is right for you, a distinction needs to be made between the terms "psychologist" and "psychiatrist." Psychologists are mental health professionals who provide psychological counseling (such as therapy) but are unable to prescribe medication. On the other hand, psychiatrists specialize in the treatment and diagnosis of mental health disorders and can prescribe medication like antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, stimulates, antipsychotics or mood stabilizers. While both are highly skilled and trained, only psychiatrists are medical doctors.

If you require medication along with counseling, you may have to see both a psychologist and a psychiatrist.

Is online psychiatry effective?

Online psychiatrists are best for those with busy schedules. They cut out travel time, uncomfortable waiting rooms and according to research, may even cost less than traditional in-person psychiatry. That sounds all positive, but is it as effective? The same study concluded that "telepsychiatry is a feasible and acceptable approach," especially for young people and vulnerable and underserved communities.

Starting services is easy. Take a quick assessment to determine the right psychiatrist for you and answer questions regarding insurance, location and gender preference of a provider. Talkspace will then take up to 48 hours to match you with a licensed psychiatrist or nurse practitioner.

An initial session is $249, and any follow-up sessions afterward are $125. Bundles for new clients are also available, with an initial session and one follow-up appointment starting at $365, three follow-up appointments at $565 and six follow-up appointments at $849.

Pros of Talkspace:

  • If you don't like your initial provider, you can switch to another at no cost

Cons of Talkspace:

Similar to Teladoc, MDLive serves patients with both general illness and mental health conditions. MDLive can prescribe medication for those with anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, trauma and PTSD, panic disorders and other mental health conditions.

MDLive serves children and teenagers aged 10 and over. Parents and guardians have the option to choose their child's provider from a long list of mental health professionals.

After signing up and sharing the reason why you are looking for a psychiatrist, you can choose your own provider. Then connect with your psychiatrist via your phone, tablet or computer. Each session will last from 15 to 30 minutes.

The initial session is $284, and each follow-up is $108, depending on insurance coverage.

Pros of MDLive :

  • Service is available to children over the age of 10
  • Finding and meeting with a provider can be done in just a few days
  • Accepts a wide range of insurance providers

Cons of MDLive :

  • A parent or guardian must be present during a child's initial session
  • Can not prescribe stimulants or substance controlled medications
  • MDLive providers can not provide paperwork for disability or emotional support animals

Patients pursue psychiatric help for various reasons, whether they need help getting through everyday life, have heavy feelings of sadness or want a potential diagnosis. Seeing a psychiatrist can be a good place to start for patients longing to find relief.

If you are carrying heavy burdens or simply want to discuss starting a medication, a psychiatrist may be right for you. A provider may also point you in the right direction if you have questions about counseling or therapy. However, a psychologist is not licensed to prescribe you medications. If medication or diagnosis is your number one concern, seek a psychiatrist.

Before choosing an online or in-person psychiatrist, make sure to take into consideration your health insurance provider and any preferences you expect from your psychiatrist. The right psychiatrist for you will have experience treating your area of concern and will work with your schedule.

As always, speak with your primary care physician or therapist before deciding if medication or a psychiatrist is right for you.

Tired of only using WhatsApp on your phone? Read this

WhatsApp , the Facebook-owned chat app, is a cross-platform app that makes it all too easy and convenient to share messages, images, videos and GIFs with friends and loved ones from your phone.

But, as with any messaging service, having to stare at your phone's screen all day while the group conversations are flooded with messages can be a hassle. Especially when you're sitting at a desk, with a computer right in front of you.

Wouldn't it be nice to have the option of accessing your WhatsApp account on your computer? Well, you can. And it's incredibly easy to set up.

What you'll need to use WhatsApp on your computer

Before you can view and manage your conversations on your PC or Mac, you'll need to make sure the WhatsApp app on your iPhone or Android phone is up to date by checking for any pending updates in your phone's respective app store.

With that done, download and install the Windows or MacOS version of WhatsApp on your computer. Alternatively, if you're using a computer that you can't install apps on, visit WhatsApp Web, which is basically a version of the app, but built for your browser.

Keep in mind, your phone will still need to have a mobile data or Wi-Fi connection in order for the app on your computer to communicate with the app on your phone. So if for example, you're traveling in another country and your phone doesn't have a connection, you won't be able to use WhatsApp on a computer.

How to set up WhatsApp Web

To use WhatsApp Web, follow these steps:

1. Using your web browser of choice, visit https://web.whatsapp.com/.

2. You'll see a QR code for you to scan with the WhatsApp phone app. You can access the built-in scanner by opening the Menu or Settings, then selecting WhatsApp Web from the options.

Notice there's a small checkbox below the QR code that will keep you signed into that computer by default. Remove the check if you're using a public computer.

3. After you scan the code, you'll be able to see your WhatsApp messages on your phone and in the browser. WhatsApp recommends leaving your phone connected to Wi-Fi and not just mobile data to avoid any data overages.

How to set up WhatsApp's desktop app

Setting up the desktop app is similar to setting up WhatsApp Web, but with one exception -- you need to download and install the application first.

1. Download the Mac or Windows version of the app from whatsapp.com/download.

2. Mac users will need to unzip the file, then move WhatsApp to the Applications folder.

3. Windows users will need to run the .EXE file and follow the prompts.

4. When the app launches, you'll see a QR code for you to scan with the WhatsApp phone app. You can access the built-in scanner by opening the Menu or Settings, then selecting WhatsApp Web from the options.

5. After you scan the code, you'll be able to see your WhatsApp messages on your phone and in the app. Again, WhatsApp recommends leaving your phone connected to a Wi-Fi network in order to reduce the amount of mobile data used.

A quick note about security

Once you've installed the app or you're logged in to the Web interface, anyone with access to your computer can view your WhatsApp conversations as long as you're logged in. If your computer is password-protected, that's probably not a big deal. But if you use WhatsApp Web from a public computer, sign out when you're finished. You can do that by clicking on the three-dot menu icon and selecting Log out.

If you forget to log out of WhatsApp Web on a computer that's not yours, or you suspect someone has accessed your account, you can log out of all active sessions by visiting the same settings page you used to scan the QR Code in the mobile app and selecting Log out from all devices.

If you're a Windows user and looking for more messaging apps, we have a few chat app recommendations beyond WhatsApp that are worth checking out. If you're just getting started with WhatsApp, make sure to check out our favorite features and learn how to use them
