In a study from the Kaiser Family Foundation published April 21, close to have of the people polled said that their worries and stress about the coronavirus pandemic has negatively impacted their mental health. Even if you didn't already deal with anxiety and/or depression, the stress of living your day-to-day life during a pandemic is likely wearing on you now.

Haley Neidich, a licensed psychotherapist, tells CNET that it's completely normal to experience fear and anxiety right now.  It is perfectly okay to feel whatever you are feeling during this time, but there are things you can do to calm your mind and ease stress.

"My biggest concern about the panic is the stress that it causes for each individual," Neidich says, noting that when panic occurs, events are canceled and shelves are cleared out of necessary items which only further increases stress. "Stress and panic begets stress and panic," she continues. "Stress weakens our immune systems, making us more susceptible to illness, which is the exact opposite of what we need right now."

If you're struggling with coronavirus anxiety, fear or feelings of helplessness, the tips below can help keep your spirits up. If you notice that stress is getting in the way of being able to work, take care of your family or do basic daily activities (like cook a meal or take a shower), you should seek professional help.

1. Limit the amount of information you consume

Limiting your time on social media is one of the best ways to keep coronavirus anxiety from spiraling.

Neidich recommends setting a limit of 30 minutes for news and social media combined each day, as well as challenging yourself to take two full days each week with no news or social media. 

Even if you don't go on your devices explicitly to check coronavirus news, during this time, you'll be bombarded -- so taking time off is an easy way to soothe anxiety. Setting Screen Time controls on iOS or Focus Mode controls on Android can help you restrict your overall screen time or the way you interact with certain apps.

2. Focus on the things you can control

Truthfully, there's not much you can do about what's happening around you. You can only take care of yourself, so that's what you should focus on, Neidich says. Follow the advice of the major health agencies monitoring and fighting coronavirus in the US -- the CDC and the WHO. 

• Wash your hands often (and sanitize them when you don't have soap and water)
• Stay away from people who are sick
• Cover your mouth when you cough and your nose when you sneeze (ideally with a tissue that you can throw away)
• Avoid touching your face whenever possible
• Leave the face masks for medical professionals, caretakers and people with compromised immune systems
• Avoid nonessential travel (locally, domestically and internationally)
• Keep your immune system strong by eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep and managing stress

"There is so much that we don't have control over in life and COVID-19 is no different," she says. "I invite people in this situation to focus on what they are able to control and to make sure they have a loved one or a counselor to confide in about their emotional experience." 

3. Stay busy with other things

This is a classic tactic for keeping anxiety under control. While you should definitely honor your feelings (more on that in the next tip), try not to allow your thoughts to spiral out of control. Focus on your daily obligations and add in fun activities to your days to keep anxiety to a minimum, Neidich says. Here are a few examples of simple, distracting activities you can try:

• Solve a puzzle or play a board game with your family
• Draw, paint, knit or do something else creative
• Try to bake a masterpiece dessert with ingredients you already have in your kitchen
• Read your favorite novel or watch your favorite movie
• Take a nap
• Call someone you love and talk about things other than the coronavirus

4. Set aside time to worry

Writing down your thoughts about coronavirus can help you work through them.

Allow yourself time to work through your thoughts about coronavirus. If you ignore them, they'll continue to persist, Neidich says. She recommends journaling by hand on how you feel about COVID-19. Grab a piece of paper and a pen, set a timer and just allow the words to flow onto paper. You don't have to keep the paper when you're done -- throwing it out can be cathartic and make it feel like you're emptying your mind of worries.

Set a timer for 3 minutes for worry journaling, Neidich says. "You will find that you'll run out of worries before the timer is up. Once this is complete, shift your attention to self-care and keep your mind busy."

5. Vent to a friend who won't judge you

If you're more of a talker than a writer, Neidich says it can help to confide in a friend about how you're feeling. Talk to someone who won't judge you for the way you feel, but try to avoid talking to someone who will fuel your anxiety even further. The key, Neidich says, is choosing someone who understands how you feel but won't perpetuate the fear you see online. 

You should also first ask whoever you speak to if it's okay to share your fears with them. Many of us are coping with the stress of what is going on and it's only fair to ask someone if they are willing and able to listen before dropping your stress on them.

Apple just released an update for iOS and iPadOS 15.0.2, which fixes a security bug on Apple devices. Notably, Apple says that the bug "may have been actively exploited," which means you should update your device right now.

Monday's update fixes a memory corruption issue that might have allowed some apps to "execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges," according to Apple's support page. Translation? Hackers could use the vulnerability to take over your iPhone or iPad. Updating your device should close the vulnerability.

This is Apple's second security update in a month, following September's Pegasus spyware-related update.

Huawei employees hit with US visa restrictions

The Trump administration has announced US visa restrictions on Huawei workers such as the refusal or revocation of a visa. The rules will be imposed on those employees of the Chinese tech giant "that provide material support to regimes engaging in human rights violations and abuses globally," Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told journalists Wednesday.

"The state department will impose visa restrictions on certain employees of Chinese technology companies like Huawei," he said. 

Pompeo called Huawei "an arm of the CCP's surveillance state that censors political dissidents and enables mass internment camps in Xinjiang and the indentured servitude of its population." Any carriers worldwide that use Huawei's equipment "are doing business with human rights abusers," Pompeo added.

The decision relies on Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which says visitors are inadmissible to the US if the Secretary of State has reason to believe their entry "would have potentially serious adverse foreign policy consequences for the United States."

Huawei didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Speaking on the UK's decision earlier this week to ban Huawei from its 5G networks, Pompeo said it wasn't influenced by US sanctions. "They did this because their security teams came to the same conclusion that ours have ... that this information that transits across these untrusted networks that are of Chinese origin will almost certainly end up in the hands of the Chinese Communist Party."

He also reportedly said plans are being finalized for combating alleged data theft by TikTok, a Chinese video social media app.

"We hope to have a set of decisions shortly," he said. "Whether it's TikTok or any of the other Chinese communications platforms, apps, infrastructure, this administration has taken seriously the requirement to protect the American people from having their information end up in the hands of the Chinese Communist Party."

TikTok responded by saying there's "a huge amount of misinformation on TikTok out there," adding its CEO and chief information security officer are US citizens who it says have "decades of US military and law enforcement experience."

"TikTok US user data is stored in the US and Singapore, with strict controls on employee access," a spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

Last month, the Trump administration announced its finding that Huawei is backed by the Chinese military. The Pentagon sent a document to Congress containing the names of 20 Chinese companies that it found to be backed by the People's Liberation Army, including Huawei.

Huawei was blacklisted by the US in May 2019 when it was added to the country's "entity list" (PDF). Trump at the same time signed an executive order essentially banning the company in light of national security concerns that Huawei had close ties with the Chinese government. Huawei has repeatedly denied that charge.

New Windows 10 May 2021 update is here: How to download and everything else to know

The Windows 10 May 2021 Update (also known as version 21H1) started rolling out to compatible devices last Tuesday, Microsoft said in a blog post. The operating system update is the latest since the October 2020 update, and includes a few new features like Windows Hello multicamera support and security fixes. (If you're running Windows 7 ($5 at Target), you can still download Windows 10 free to get the May 2021 update and avoid security issues.)

While there are a few useful new features, it seems that Microsoft is using this smaller update cycle to prepare for a larger Windows 10 UI update, reportedly code-named Sun Valley, that will be part of Microsoft's renewed focus on Windows 10 that executives mentioned last year. On Wednesday at the Microsoft Build developer's conference, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella teased the next update, saying the company is planning "one of the most significant updates of Windows of the past decade," and that Microsoft plans to unveil the new version "very soon."

We won't know exactly what that update includes until it's formally revealed, but we've collected some rumors below.

Here's what to know about Windows 10 version 21H1, and what it could mean for the future of the OS. 

What is Windows 10 version 21H1?

Windows 10 version 21H1 is Microsoft's latest update to the OS, and started rolling out on May 18. It's also called the Windows 10 May 2021 update. 

Usually, Microsoft releases a larger feature update in the spring and a smaller one in the fall. But version 21H1, though a spring update, is a more minor update rather than an overhaul.

What new features does the Windows 10 May 2021 update include?

According to a February Microsoft blog post, new Windows 10 features include:

• Multicamera support for Windows Hello, allowing users to choose an external camera when using high-end displays with integrated cameras.
• Improvements to Windows Defender Application Guard, including optimizing document opening scenario times.
• Improvements to Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) Group Policy Service (GPSVC) updating, to support remote work. 

"The features we are releasing in this update are focused on the core experiences that customers have told us they're relying on most right now," the post said. "So, we optimized this release to support our customers' most pressing needs." 

According to Digital Trends, the update also includes new icons, updated settings pages and some tweaks to Cortana and the search box experience. 

How can I download the Windows 10 May 2021 update?

The May 2021 update began rolling out on May 18 to select devices, starting with those running Windows 10 version 2004 or later. Not all devices will be offered the update right away, so try to be patient until it reaches yours. There also may be some compatibility issues, according to Microsoft's blog post -- if that happens, Microsoft has a safeguard hold in place and will not offer you the update until the team is confident that you'll have a good update experience.

When the May 2021 update is available to you, you'll be able to download it by going to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, and clicking Check for Updates. If available, you'll see Feature update to Windows 10, version 21H1. Click Download and install. 

This marks the first time an H1 (first half of the calendar year) feature update is being delivered using Microsoft's servicing technology. That means it'll arrive the same way that monthly Windows 10 updates do. It's also the same way the October 2020 update was released. If you're already running either Windows 10 version 2004 or version 20H2, it'll be a fast installation process to get the newest update.

What's this bigger Windows 10 update that could be coming next? 

On an October 2020 earnings call, Nadella said that Microsoft is "doubling down" on Windows and PCs, and will continue to innovate. 

This could take the form of a major OS update for Windows 10 later this year that would bring a major design refresh to the UI, according to a report from Windows Central. The update, reportedly code-named Sun Valley, could bring a redesigned Start menu, Action Center and File Explorer, with a more modern look and new features. Sun Valley is expected to be released around the 2021 holiday season, Windows Central says, but that could change. 

Again, at the Microsoft Build conference on May 25, Nadella teased the next Windows 10 update, saying the company is planning "one of the most significant updates of Windows of the past decade," and that Microsoft plans to unveil the new version "very soon."

Another factor: Microsoft said that its Windows 10X OS designed for dual-screen devices like the Surface Duo and the Surface Neo will not come to market this year, as Microsoft originally intended. Instead, Microsoft will build parts of that technology into other parts of Windows and products from the company, the May 18 blog post said.

In fact, it might even be worth it to grab one for yourself as an extra device for work or for games.

If you're searching for a laptop under $500, here are the best budget laptops you can buy right now. If you're not sure what to look for in a good budget laptop -- other than price -- jump to our buying advice right below our recommendations. This advice is based on our years of testing and review experience to figure out what to expect from a laptop priced under $500. It will also let you know what to look for if you want to continue your budget laptop hunt on your own. 

Use these picks to sort through the competition. Because there are a lot of cheap laptops that aren't worth it, try not to make rash decisions when buying.

Gateway was best known for low-cost desktops and laptops back in the '90s. In 2020, the brand was revived for a new lineup of laptops and tablets sold exclusively through Walmart. Those models were recently updated with 11th-gen Intel processors and we tested both 15.6- and 14.1-inch models. The latter gets our vote as an inexpensive option for getting school work done while still being light enough to carry around campus for the day. 

The attention-grabber is the Intel Core i5 processor that provides reliable performance, despite being paired with cheaper components. The keyboard is comfortable, but not backlit, and the touchpad isn't the most precise. Also, the built-in fingerprint reader is hit-or-miss. Still, it has lots of ports so connecting a mouse or an external display isn't an issue and the full-HD display is decent too, all things considered. Plus, the battery lasted a couple minutes shy of 10 hours on our streaming video test.

This Lenovo Chromebook IdeaPad Duet is essentially a Chrome version of the first Microsoft Surface Go. Like the Go, the Lenovo Chromebook Duet is a 10-inch tablet with a detachable keyboard and touchpad-- making it a compact touch screen laptop. Unlike Microsoft, though, Lenovo includes the keyboard. The Lenovo Duet is essentially a smaller, albeit less powerful, Pixel Slate that makes more sense for more people with a cheap laptop price that's more in line with what people expect a Chromebook to cost.

The Chromebook Duet screen is small, however, so if you're regularly using it at a desk, we recommend attaching an external monitor to its USB-C port. You'll probably want to connect a wireless keyboard and mouse, too.

The Acer Aspire 5 15-inch clamshell continues to be one of the best laptop deals available. This sub-4-pound Windows laptop includes an AMD Ryzen 3 3350U processor, 4GB of memory and a speedy 128GB SSD. This budget laptop also features a USB 3.2 Gen 1 USB-C port, two USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports, Ethernet and an HDMI port. 

The Acer Aspire even has a backlit keyboard and fingerprint reader for quick sign-ins -- rarities at this price. The 4GB RAM and 128GB solid-state drive storage don't allow you to have many programs or lots of browser tabs open simultaneously but you can add more of both down the road. 

Asus

Amazon currently offers an older Core i3 8GB model for under $450, a reasonable price for a Windows laptop with an Intel Core processor. You'll also see listings with 4GB RAM, but that's way too little memory for Windows, which barely gets by on 8GB. Don't confuse it with the thinner, lighter, more expensive Asus VivoBook S15.

Lenovo

The Windows version of the Flex two-in-one has the beefed up specs (at least over a Chromebook) necessary to run Windows, though probably not very fast -- the dual-core Intel Core i3 processor and 4GB of RAM are the reasons the price is low. But it has a bigger full HD screen than the Chromebook model.

Are laptops under $500 any good?

As a rule of thumb, resist buying out of desperation -- don't spend $500 because you can't find a cheaper laptop deal available, for example. Buying a need-it-now laptop can be like shopping for food while hungry. Even for a laptop, $500 can be a lot of money, and you'll likely be holding onto it for at least three years, if the statistics Intel and PC manufacturers hurl at us are correct.

You can also try to make your current laptop last a little longer. If you need something to tide you over for a few months, dig into possible places to buy refurbished machines and explore nonprofit or educational discounts if you're eligible. Also, if there's something you really want in a laptop, like a touchscreen, a backlit keyboard, DDR4 RAM, an HD webcam, Intel UHD Graphics, AMD Radeon Vega Graphics or an HDMI port, check the manufacturer's specs closely to make sure it has it. You'll regret it if you don't.

If you suspect you'll be holding onto your new laptop for a while, see if you can stretch your budget to buy a slightly more expensive laptop to accommodate more than 8GB of RAM or a processor with more cores than you were otherwise considering. If you haven't thought about it, look at AMD Ryzen processors as alternatives to Intel Core for Windows laptops or alternatives to Intel Celeron and Pentium for Chromebooks.

Even better, if you're comfortable with it, think about an affordable laptop with a replaceable battery (if you can find one), upgradable memory, graphics card and storage, or all of the above. Furthermore, while you might be working remotely now, you won't be stuck at home forever. Remember to consider whether having a lighter, thinner laptop or a touchscreen laptop with a good battery life will be important to you in the future.

You can always add an external drive or two (or five, if you're me) at some point down the road. But if your internal storage is the type of slow-spinning hard drive that comes in a lot of cheap laptop models, fast external storage is unlikely to help speed up loading Windows or applications. You can frequently set a system to boot from an external solid-state drive if necessary.

You may see references to Intel Optane in conjunction with slow (5,400rpm) spinning hard drives; Optane is fast solid-state memory that acts as a temporary storage space for frequently accessed files on the hard drive to speed things up. It helps, but not as much as an SSD drive. 

And finally, if you're replacing an old Windows laptop that's not up to running Windows anymore, consider turning it into a Chromebook.

What are the trade-offs on laptops under $500?

As long as you manage your expectations when it comes to options and specs, you can still get quite a bit from a budget laptop model, including good battery life and a reasonably lightweight laptop body. 

A bright spot is you don't have to settle for a traditional clamshell laptop with a fixed display and keyboard. You can also get a convertible laptop (aka a two-in-one), which has a screen that flips around to turn the screen into a tablet, to position it for comfortable streaming or to do a presentation. Keep in mind that all convertibles work as both laptops and tablets. A touchscreen is a prerequisite for tablet operation, and many support styluses (aka pens) for handwritten and sketched input. Don't assume a stylus is included, though.

One thing you won't find at these cheap laptop prices: a MacBook or any other Apple laptop. An iPad will run you more than $500 once you buy the optional keyboard (though it might work out to less if you look for sales on the tablet or keyboard), which is above our budget here. A base-model iPad with an inexpensive Bluetooth keyboard and cheap stand for the iPad might suffice.

You'll see a lot of cheap laptops listed as coming with Windows 10 S, a stripped-down and locked-down version of the operating system intended for use by schools -- it only allows you to install applications from the Windows Store, forces you to use Microsoft's Edge browser and includes a subset of the administrative tools in Windows 10 Pro. You can upgrade to the full version for free, though.

It doesn't feel like there's much to make the new Windows 11 a must-have upgrade, but if it's going to be important to you for some reason, be careful about checking that the laptop will meet the requirements. These inexpensive models can be especially at risk of not making the cut.

It's easier to find inexpensive Chromebooks than Windows laptops, making them one of the most popular budget laptops on the market, though we're also seeing a lot more Chromebooks in the $500-to-$1,000 range. That's because Google's Chrome OS isn't nearly as power-hungry as Windows (check the specs), so you can get by with a lower-end processor, slower storage and less screen resolution or RAM -- just a few of the components that make a laptop expensive. 

But the flip side is Chrome and Google apps are more of a memory hog than you'd expect, and if you go too low with the processor or skimp on memory, the system will still feel slow. Chrome OS is also a much different experience than Windows; make sure the applications you need have a Chrome app, Android app or Linux app before making the leap.

Since Chromebooks are cloud-first devices, however, you don't need a lot of storage built-in. That also means if you spend most of your time roaming the web, writing, streaming video or playing Android games, they're a good fit. If you hope to play Android games, make sure you get a touchscreen Chromebook.

For a cheap gaming laptop, though, you'll still have to break the $500 ceiling to support most games. The least expensive budget laptops suitable for a solid gaming performance experience -- those with moderately powerful discrete graphics processors -- will run you closer to $700. Here are our recommendations if you're looking for the best gaming laptop under $1,000. 

Although, if you like to live on the bleeding edge, cloud gaming services such as Google Stadia and Microsoft Xbox Game Pass Ultimate's Game Streaming will let you play games on laptops with specs that hit the under-$500 mark. 

What to look for in laptops under $500

While Chromebooks can run Chrome OS-specific and Android apps, some people need the full Windows OS to run heftier applications, such as video-editing suites. If you want a good video editing laptop, the HP Chromebook with Intel Celeron processors provides 5.4 times high-resolution video editing than the basic HP laptop. With that comes a need for a faster processor with more cores, more memory -- 8GB RAM is the bare minimum -- and more storage for applications and the operating system itself. A lot of these have 4GB or 6GB, which, in conjunction with a spinning hard disk, can make for a frustratingly slow Windows laptop experience. But demands on Chromebooks are growing, so if your Chrome needs to run beyond the basics you should think about paying more for more memory and a faster processor.

• A lot of Windows laptops in this range use AMD Athlon and lower-end A series or Intel Celeron and Pentium processors to hit the lower price. I don't really recommend going with an Athlon instead of a Ryzen or a Celeron/Pentium instead of a Core: Windows is too heavy for them, and in conjunction with the 4GB memory a lot of them have, you may find them abysmally slow at best.
• Because of their low prices, 11.6-inch Chromebooks are attractive. Samsung Chromebook has a fantastic screen and nearly 10 hours of battery life. But we don't recommend that size for any but the youngest students. And if you're both going to be looking at the screen frequently for remote learning, 11 inches can get really cramped.
• SSDs can make a big difference in how fast Windows performance feels compared with a spinning hard disk, but they also push the price up. So if your budget can stretch a little and you want more storage, you may want to consider stepping up from base storage options to a 128GB SSD. 
• In the budget price range, you have to watch out for screen terminology when it comes to specs: An "HD" screen may not always be a truly high-definition screen. HD, which has a resolution of 1,920x1,080 pixels, is called "Full HD" so marketers can refer to lesser-resolution displays (1,280x720 pixels) as HD. In Chromebooks, HD usually refers to a screen with a resolution of 1,366x768 pixels. On the upside, the boom in 14-inch laptops trickles down to this price range, which allows for more FHD options in the size. 
• A frequent complaint I see is about "washed-out" looking displays with poor viewing angles. Unfortunately, that's one of the trade-offs: A lot of these use TN (twisted nematic) screen technology, which is cheap but meh.
• Pay attention to networking. Inexpensive models with older chipsets may only support Wi-Fi 3 (or 802.11b/g/n). Wi-Fi 3 is limited to 2.4GHz channels; those are slower than more recent chipsets with Wi-Fi 4 (aka 802.11ac) that add a 5GHz channel as well. I haven't seen any laptops in this price range with Wi-Fi 6, the newest version; chances are you won't have any Wi-Fi 6 access points to connect to, though, so you likely won't miss it now. The specifications aren't always correct on the shopping sites, so if you see a model that doesn't seem to have Wi-Fi 4, double-check on the manufacturer's site before ruling it out. Remember, Chromebooks are designed to work predominantly over the internet, so Wi-Fi speed and stability are crucial.

On Monday's Raw it became official: For the first time, WrestleMania, the biggest professional wrestling event in the world, will be main-evented by women. Ronda Rousey will defend her Raw Women's Championship in the last match on the show against Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair.

This is good news, but fans of WWE and pro wrestling could be forgiven for reading it with a suspicious eye. WWE is a company obsessed with its public image, and isn't above making on-screen decisions for off-screen press. The company's PR Twitter account has been in overdrive for the past day, for instance, making sure everyone knows how progressive WWE is for making this decision.

Rousey, Lynch and Flair headlining WrestleMania would be historic in any circumstance. What makes this truly important, though, is that this really isn't about good PR. The women's match is the most anticipated on the show, features the company's most popular performers and has a chance to be the best match of the night.

On Tuesday's episode of SmackDown, WWE showed how serious it is about the main event by having Flair win the SmackDown Women's Championship. That means the WrestleMania triple threat will feature both Raw Women's Champion, Rousey, and SmackDown's Women's Champion, Flair. Two champions from separate TV shows and one extremely popular Becky Lynch. That's not winning recipe.

Why does the main event matter?

WrestleMania takes place on April 7 in New Jersey's MetLife Stadium, where over 60,000 fans will watch it live. More importantly, it'll stream live on the WWE Network, a streaming service whose main selling point is its broadcasting of monthly pay-per-views. The past few years have seen an explosion in non-WWE wrestling companies, like New Japan Pro Wrestling, but WrestleMania is still comfortably the biggest and most significant wrestling show of the year.

Being the main event of WrestleMania -- the last match, the match around which the show is promoted -- is considered the highest accolade in the wrestling industry. It means Vince McMahon, chairman and CEO of the company, believes you are the hottest commodity in the company and his best bet for selling tickets, Network subscriptions and merchandise. Championships come and go in a calendar year, but there's only one WrestleMania main event.

The idea of women headlining WrestleMania was preposterous only years ago. WWE's historic treatment of women is well documented. WWE in the mid to late '90s found success promoting the likes of Sunny and Sable as sex symbols, inking lucrative Playboy deals, and never really looked back. The men were referred to as WWE "Superstars," but the women were "Divas." Women's "wrestling" was more about Bra and Panties matches, where you win by stripping your opponent down to their undergarments, than serious title bouts.

Example: At WrestleMania 22, in 2006, Candice Michelle faced Torrie Wilson in a Playboy Pillow Flight.

WWE's treatment of women has improved greatly in recent years. NXT, an adored WWE-owned brand watchable on the WWE Network, in 2014 began featuring women in prominent spots on its shows. Women were given 10, 15 and 20 minutes to have show-stealing matches, rather than the sub-five minutes they would usually get on WWE pay-per-views. This proved a hit to fans, who then began a #GiveDivasAChance social media movement.

This was in early 2015, around the time Ronda Rousey was selling hundreds of thousands of UFC pay-per-views and becoming a bigger star than anyone in WWE. A year later, in 2016, the term "Diva" was dropped and the company resurrected the Women's Championship (and now both the Raw and SmackDown brands have their own women's champion). By the end of the year women, like Charlotte Flair, Bayley and Sasha Banks, were presented as top stars.

A Rowdy WrestleMania

MetLife Stadium is in New Jersey. If you watch Raw or SmackDown, you've probably heard commentators say that WrestleMania takes place at MetLife Stadium "in the shadow of New York." New Jersey isn't glamorous enough to host WrestleMania, you see, so instead WWE wants you to think it's taking place in New York. WWE cares a lot about PR.

It also cares about taking advantage of new markets and demographics (as any company should). In 2017 a wrestler named Jinder Mahal went from an undercard "enhancement talent" -- someone whose job it is to lose every week and make their opponent look strong -- to WWE Champion in the space of a month. His reign lasted just under six months, and now he's right back to losing on TV every week.

Why did WWE briefly put him on top of the card? Presumably because he's Indian and India is a quickly growing, potentially lucrative market. Mahal wasn't popular before he won the title, and he had little momentum. It was an experiment that, judging by his return to being a background character, the WWE didn't consider a success.

The women's main event at WrestleMania is not that. It's not an experiment or an empty gesture.

"Rowdy" Ronda Rousey, thanks to her UFC success, is the biggest pop culture star the company has other than maybe John Cena. Becky Lynch is not yet a household name, but she is the most popular wrestler in the company. Watch any show she's on and you'll see frenzied crowds chanting her name -- even when she's not in the ring. Charlotte Flair, meanwhile, has been the most consistently promoted and consistently awesome women's wrestler in the company.

The hero of this tale is Becky Lynch, who overcame injury at the Royal Rumble in January to earn a WrestleMania championship match against Rousey. The story has picked up steam, and controversy, in recent weeks as Rousey turned into an on-screen villain. Jealous that Lynch is cheered by fans over her, Rousey now vows to scrap "fake" pro wrestling and beat up her WrestleMania opponents "for real." 

Flair was inserted into the match, after Lynch had earned her shot, thanks to being the "corporate pick." The TV story goes that as a statuesque blonde and the daughter of the iconic Ric Flair, the WWE wants her to be champion and represent women's wrestling. The most recent episode of SmackDown saw her -- randomly, and to the dissatisfaction of many fans -- get an opportunity at Asuka's SmackDown Women's Championship. Flair won. WWE is using all of its tricks to make this main event as special as possible.

The three competitors share a blistering hatred for one another in their on-screen storyline. But this is an instance where the TV drama can't match the real-life history making.

These women weren't given the main event. They earned it.

Snapchat said more than 1 million people globally are paying for its Snapchat Plus subscription service. The company launched the service six weeks ago.

The news points to how social media companies are trying to make more money outside of ad sales.

More than 1 million people worldwide are paying for Snapchat's subscription service, the social media company said Monday.

It's the first time Snapchat's parent company, Snap, has revealed how many people subscribe to Snapchat Plus, a subscription service the social media company launched six weeks ago, in late June. Snapchat Plus costs about $4 per month in the US and gives users early access to features the company is testing. The service is another example of how social media platforms are trying to make money outside of advertising as they try to keep their footing during an economic downturn. 

Twitter has a similar monthly subscription offering, known as Twitter Blue, but the company hasn't revealed how many people pay for that product. 

Snapchat has a bigger audience than Twitter, with 347 million daily active users. Twitter has 238 million "monetizable" daily users. Snapchat is also more popular among teens, a valuable market for advertisers. About 59% of US teens say they use Snapchat while 23% of teens say they use Twitter, according to a survey released by the Pew Research Center last week. 

Snap, like other social media companies, is facing challenges making more money as advertisers pull back spending. In July, the company's stock tanked more than 39% after Snap reported disappointing second-quarter earnings. Snapchat is also planning to lay off workers, The Verge reported, citing people familiar with the matter. App market intelligence firm Sensor Tower estimates that Snapchat made roughly $6 million from mobile app revenue in July.

Snap said it's adding more features to its subscription service, such as making replies to Snapchat stories more visible to high-profile users. Stories is a feature that lets people post photos and videos that vanish in 24 hours. The company is also adding more backgrounds for Bitmoji avatars, giving people the ability to pick an emoji that friends can see after a Snap (photos and videos people send through the app), and choose custom app icons.

Snapchat Plus is available in the US, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, India, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Egypt, Israel, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Netherlands, Switzerland, Ireland, Belgium, Finland and Austria.

If your Samsung Galaxy S21 is malfunctioning or the screen has cracked, Samsung says it wants to help you avoid spending lots of money getting it fixed at a repair shop. The company has officially launched a new program to sell you the parts, tools and repair guides required to fix your own device -- a win for right-to-repair and sustainability advocates. 

The program is starting small: Only owners of the Samsung Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S20 range of devices, and the Galaxy Tab S7 Plus tablet, will be eligible at first. Samsung plans to expand the program to include more devices, but it declined to say when or which gadgets, like its latest Samsung Galaxy S22 family, would be added first.

Consumers who want to fix their Samsung device can purchase parts and repair tools through Samsung retail locations, the Samsung 837 store in Manhattan and through iFixit. The self-repair website has partnered with Samsung for this program to improve its own repair guides and offer support through its community forum. 

"Making replacement parts available is a key sustainability strategy. We're excited to be working
directly with Samsung and their customers to extend the lifetime of their phones,"
co-founder and CEO of iFixit Kyle Wiens said in a press release.

Eligible device owners initially will be able to replace their front screens, glass backs and charging ports, with more repair options added at some point in the future. Once new parts are installed, customers are encouraged to return the used parts to Samsung for recycling.

Though Samsung is pitching the self-repair program as a more sustainable solution than buying a new phone, it's also convenient for people who want to tinker with their devices. For anyone who doesn't want to go through the trouble themselves, the company still offers a network of authorized repair shops across the US and a same-day repair service including vans that'll visit consumers to fix devices.

Samsung's program comes amid increasing pressure from advocates and governments pushing tech companies to let consumers fix their phones. More than a dozen US states have passed laws supporting right to repair, and US President Joe Biden issued an executive order in July for the Federal Trade Commission to investigate the issue. And with the European Union passing a measure a year ago that requires manufacturers of some appliances to provide guides and parts for third-party repair shops, the tide is turning on right to repair. 

Big tech companies are responding to that pressure, and some beat Samsung to the punch. After years of allowing Apple product owners to fix their devices only at Apple Stores and authorized repair shops or have their warranties invalidated, Apple announced its own self-repair program back in November. Sometime this year (Apple hasn't confirmed a launch date), consumers can request their own set of Apple parts to fix their iPhones.

One of the world's largest music labels is exploring entertainment in the metaverse. Universal Music Group is already home to some of music's biggest names, but now its label 10:22PM is launching the music group Kingship, made up of some famous NFTs, or nonfungible tokens.

Four virtual apes from the Bored Ape Yacht Club collection of NFTs comprise a "metaverse group," Universal said Thursday. The team behind Kingship will eventually put on performances and release original music.

"Just as we would with any artist or creator, my team and I will work with Kingship to sharpen their vision and develop their unique sound," Celine Joshua, founder of the label 10:22PM, said in a press release. "Each member of the group has their own story and personality that influences and contributes to Kingships's overall narrative."

10:22PM will create backstories for the apes and eventually sell NFT performances, providing buyers with unique musical experiences, Bloomberg reported. Alongside concerts in the metaverse, the group represents a "new area of NFT ownership," said Jimmy McNeils, the owner of the four NFTs that make up the group.

NFTs have already been big money for some owners. The Bored Ape Yacht Club is a collection of thousands of unique digital artwork depicting, well, bored apes. At the end of October, one sold for $3.4 million. Two of the NFTs in Kingship are currently valued at about $125,000, according to OpenSea, an online NFT marketplace.

It's unclear when the first performance or musical NFT will be available to potential fans. Universal Music Group didn't immediately respond to questions about any timeline.

I'll be the first to admit I subscribe to way too many streaming services: HBO Max, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus (it had a multiyear deal!), even BritBox. My family experiences the perks of this firsthand -- we can watch almost anything we want, when we want. But with all these catalogs of media at our disposal, how do we find the movies and TV shows we're looking for?

There are plenty of apps and sites that claim they'll help with this. But I'm old and cranky and lazy. I don't want to download any app or join any site to get the info. I just want to know where to watch the original Top Gun before I see the sequel, or how to get nostalgic with old episodes of Quincy, M.E. And I want to get the answer in seconds.

Here's what I do.

JustWatch.com

First, I bookmarked JustWatch.com and put it in a prominent space on my bookmarks bar. I've tried other search-for-streaming-programs sites and this is by far the simplest. You don't have to join anything or download anything. I barely even look at the site, I just go right to the search box in the upper right corner and type in my movie or show title.

Bam, JustWatch.com spits back an answer. It tells me that because I have Amazon Prime Video, I can watch the original Top Gun for free. (So I did. I felt the need for speed, and a little shirtless Tom Cruise playing volleyball.) If I didn't have Prime Video, the site told me, I could watch it free on Paramount Plus, or I could pay a couple of bucks to rent it from any number of streaming services, or buy it for more.

Just Google it

This seems almost too obvious to state, but here goes. You can just Google the movie or show name with the word "streaming" attached. You can save yourself wrong answers if you put the show or movie name in quotes, too. 

Generally, this sends me to a bunch of news stories telling me where to stream whatever it is. I find this more annoying than JustWatch.com, but if I'm not getting a quick answer from JustWatch, this also works. Sometimes better.

I was dying (Get it? Dying? Because he's a coroner?) to watch some old episodes of Quincy, M.E. on any streaming service. JustWatch.com informed me that the classic Jack Klugman drama isn't streaming anywhere. It allowed me to sign up to be notified if that changes, though you need to make a free account on the site for that. 

But when I used the Google method, I learned that Quincy, M.E. episodes air on nostalgia channel Cozi TV, which I get via YouTube TV. So I set it to record future episodes. Not as satisfying as being able to watch it on streaming right now, but better than nothing. I'm all set to settle in later this week and catch up with Quince, Sam and the regulars at Danny's restaurant.

The reality of a 5G phone is closer than you think.

Mobile chip giant Qualcomm on Thursday announced a partnership with several of the largest Chinese phone manufacturers, including Lenovo (Motorola's parent), Xiaomi, ZTE, Oppo (OnePlus' owner) and Vivo, to build 5G phones as early as 2019. 

Under the "5G Pioneer" initiative, Qualcomm will help create a platform for the companies to build phones running on 5G, the next generation of wireless technology that promises more speed and better coverage. 5G, one of the hottest trends in tech, is considered the foundation for a number of growing segments such as self-driving cars and artificial intelligence. 

Qualcomm also said Lenovo, Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi signed a deal to use Qualcomm radio technology worth a total of $2 billion over three years. 

It's a win for Qualcomm at a time when the company has been defending itself from an unsolicited bid from rival Broadcom. Qualcomm has rejected Broadcom's $130 billion bid to combine the companies, asserting the Qualcomm that is worth more than the offer.
