MSI Raider GE76 gaming laptop has the fastest of everything. It shows

MSI's top-end 17-inch Raider GE76 gaming laptop comes with state-of-the-art components that let it fly. It's stacked with an Intel Core i9-12900HK CPU and Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti GPU. That processor is the newest Intel mobile Alder Lake architecture, which splits the cores into performance-optimized and efficiency-optimized (like Apple's M1 chips). And while the RTX 3080 Ti is just a new iteration of Nvidia's top mobile GPU, the MSI shows how well it performs when you push it -- and not even to the max -- in a system that allows it to draw full power.

In other words, the components are performing better than they would on a laptop with a pretty thin-and-light design; those have to compromise on power for the sake of cooling, battery size and AC adapter size. The downside is that the Raider is a lot more traditional. It also lacks Nvidia's Advanced Optimus, which is better at juggling the internal and discrete GPUs than the older version of Optimus used in the Raider GE76.

The Raider GE76 comes in about seven different configurations that range in price from $1,599 (with an i7-12700H, RTX 3060 and 1080p 360Hz display) to $4,199 (i9-12900HK, RTX 3080 Ti and 4K 120Hz display). Our test system configuration isn't available here, but the closest option, with an i9-12900HK, RTX 3080 Ti and 1440p 240Hz display for $3,999 is actually better; 4K can be overkill for 17 inches and 1080p is OK, but QHD is just right. (Since exchange-rate conversions bear no relation to the regional pricing, I haven't included them.)

It's pretty pricey overall, and currently still in preorder, since it's not shipping until around late March. It's definitely worth waiting to see what's out there around the same time.

The laptop's screen isn't on the GPU bus, so the battery life is highly dependent on whether you remember to switch into hybrid mode. (In hybrid mode, the rendering and acceleration are performed by the Nvidia GPU and passed over the system bus to the CPU to render to the screen, which might make it a bit slower.) That means you have to manually force it to use the discrete graphics -- it can't toggle back and forth intelligently and automatically, and you have to reboot to switch. MSI does have a utility that automatically switches in and out of "extreme" mode as you launch games.

My performance test results place it as best in class -- or close -- across the board, and by a significant margin in some cases. Single-core speed, traditionally Intel's strong point, is also impressive. When you combine all the advances in GPU and CPU in the system, it becomes a powerhouse for video editing (though if you really want to you probably want a better screen than the run-of-the-mill model I tested, which is optimized for refresh rate).

You can overclock the GPU and VRAM up to 200MHz each via MSI's utility. Simply bumping the GPU up by 100MHz lifted performance on Rift Breaker's GPU test and FireStrike Ultra by about 6%, and Port Royal (which measures Nvidia's RTX ray-tracing performance) by about 7%. That's quite good and means there's room for more uplift, as long as you're willing to put up with the fan noise.

The touchpad feels a little small relative to the size of the laptop.

Lori Grunin/CNET

This isn't really a "laptop" laptop. It's a desktop replacement, so I'm not sure how important a little extra battery life is. Still, when you let the system use its intelligent power handling (without forcing it into save-battery-at-all-costs mode) it lasted about 5 to 6 hours streaming video continuously over Wi-Fi, which is unusually long for a traditional 17-inch gaming system. It's big and relatively heavy, with one of those mondo power bricks that add another two pounds to the carry weight. It can also get pretty loud, even in hybrid mode, though it doesn't seem to run particularly hot.

While it performs exceptionally well on all counts, that's due to all the new components in it, and this is the first time we've tested them. I do expect to see a lot of systems that perform comparably as 2022 wears on.

Among the laptop's performance-related perks is support for DirectStorage, Microsoft's programming interface for high-bandwidth SSD file operations in Windows (and the Xbox Series X/S), that, combined with its Samsung SSD and PCIe 4 bus, delivers quite a nice score of 2,802 on 3DMark's SSD performance test (we're still building our database of comparison numbers).

A lot of swings, some misses

MSI's also one of the first companies to partner with BlueStacks for its mobile-gaming-on-laptop technology. Incorporated into its MSI App Player, it theoretically lets you play Android games on the laptop as if they were written for a PC -- a bigger screen, high-power processing, full controller support and more.

msi-raider-ge76-dsc00358
Lori Grunin/CNET

But it's really hit and miss, at least on the MSI. For instance, Dead Cells, which is listed on BlueStacks' site as a compatible game, wouldn't run. Little Adventures did, but when I rotated it to landscape to take advantage of the bigger screen, it literally just rotated the game, leaving it lying on its side. The App Player is simply emulating a phone -- if the game doesn't support landscape or a controller, it won't. And it doesn't tell you that; you just have to discover by trial and error. The Home screen for the player shows BlueStacks-optimized games, but at least a casual look-through didn't turn up a single A-lister.

Given the size of the laptop, the touchpad is too small, and I'm finding it intermittently nonresponsive. Plus, the SteelSeries keyboard feels mushy; quiet, but more like gel than membrane. I do like the laptop's lighting design, but I'm a sucker for a lightbar (as well as underglow).

And MSI touts the full HD (1080p) webcam, but there's a lot more to a good webcam than resolution. Most of the best have a lot of supporting intelligence to deliver decent autoexposure and white balance at the very least, but this one's pretty meh, even in controlled lighting. It should be fine for basic videoconferencing, but you may want to buy a better external one if you care about image and especially if you plan to stream.

If you're in the market for a speedy upgrade over whatever you're gaming on now, the MSI Raider GE76 definitely delivers -- as long as you're willing to plonk down a lot of money before seeing what the rest of the competition does with similar components, or what arrives a little later this year in a thinner-and-lighter package (between March and June) than the Raider line.

Sonos Ray vs. Sonos Beam: Which TV Soundbar Should You Buy?

Sonos Ray vs. Sonos Beam: Which TV Soundbar Should You Buy?

Back in 2017 Sonos released one of its best products for the money: the Sonos One smart speaker, which offered great sound and an affordable entry into Sonos' excellent whole home audio system. When the Sonos Beamsoundbar appeared it wasn't the same kind of slam dunk, in part due to its relatively high price. Now, with the arrival of the Sonos Ray soundbar, the company finally has a One equivalent for its TV speakers.

The Beam costs a lot more than the Ray, but it gives you Dolby Atmos, bigger sound and built-in voice control. Is it worth the extra cash? What are the other differences? I compared both side-by-side in CNET's audio lab to find out. Read on to find out which one of these excellent TV soundbars you should choose.

Ty Pendlebury/CNET

The Sonos Ray is a simple, stereo soundbar which offers a big sound in a relatively compact package. It offers digital optical connection to a television and Wi-Fi for streaming music. It features a sleek design and promises an easy setup process. It's perfect for small TVs but will also suit gaming setups or small living rooms.

Sarah Tew/CNET

The Sonos Beam is more than a step up, it's on a completely different level. It features the same great design and streaming, multiroom-capable music system, but adds a number of key features like HDMI and Dolby Atmos playback, which helps it sound better with movies.

Price

At $450 the Sonos Beam (Gen 2) is not a cheap soundbar (it sits above my own $300 and $400 sweet spot) but the product does have some key advantages. At an almost 40 percent discount the $280 Sonos Ray is much more affordable but the differences between the two speakers are significant. One thing to consider is that the money you save on the Ray could buy you a couple of Symfonisk bookshelves rears, which would help increase the sense of immersion with movies.

Optical vs. HDMI connections

One of the biggest changes to the Ray is that it now includes an optical port instead of the HDMI connector featured on the last two soundbars. How big of a deal is this? If you have an optical port on your TV, and most TVs do, then that's not an issue at all. Simply connect the cable in the box to your TV and then the Ray, and your television should be able do the rest.

There are a number of key advantages to using an HDMI cable including HDMI (CEC) which controls power between the units, as well as advanced formats like Dolby Atmos. Of course, while the Beam is designed to take advantage of this format the Ray cannot.

sonos-beam-gen-2-1

Sonos Beam (Gen 2)

Ty Pendlebury/CNET

Dolby Digital vs. Dolby Atmos (faux) surround

Even if the TV says it's Dolby Atmos capable, if you're watching without an audio system you'll be watching it in stereo...  and it'll be fairly poor quality at that. The best way to improve intelligibility on your TV is to get a soundbar, and helpfully both the Ray and the Beam both offer Speech Enhancement modes.

As compact single speakers neither the Ray nor the Beam can provide true surround effects, but both can handle Dolby formats. The Sonos Ray may be a stereo soundbar but it includes Dolby Digital decoding as well as tweeter waveguides which make the soundbar sound much bigger than it really is. The Beam can take advantage of Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Atmos audio formats too, and sounds even bigger.

Which one sounds better?

There's one reason I call the Ray the "Sonos One soundbar" -- it's because they sound similar to each other. The speakers share a tight, slightly-closed sound which is great for rock music and pop. Yet, the Ray is still able to deliver excellent dialog reproduction, even if the Speech Enhancement feature is only subtle.

The Beam sounds a little different, bigger, and that's thanks to both its beam-forming side speakers and its excellent Dolby Atmos emulation. If you watch the latest blockbusters, like Dune or Mad Max: Fury Road. the speaker will literally fill your room with sound, especially in the height dimension. This is something the Ray as a stereo bar simply can't do.

sonos-ray-001

The Sonos Ray

Do you need built-in Alexa or Google Assistant voice?

The Sonos Beam has a voice assistant onboard but the Sonos Ray does not. To me, this isn't a huge problem because buying a soundbar without a voice assistant can save money, especially if you already have one in the room. There's a wealth of affordable smart speakers out there, such as the Amazon Echo Dot ($17 at Amazon), Google Nest Mini or the Lenovo Smart Clock Essential (on sale for $25), and all of these can control Sonos speakers. Sure, you miss out on the new Sonos Voice Assistant, but its functionality is limited for now.

Which should you choose?

Apart from the key differences above, the Ray and the Beam (Gen 2) share a lot of similarities. They're a similar size and design, and both feature the excellent Sonos multiroom system.

If you want something to pair with a smaller TV or to go into a games room the Sonos Ray is an excellent choice, and it's also the one I'd choose if you want something that's going to play a lot of tunes. Meanwhile the Sonos Beam's bigger, louder sound means it's suited to larger rooms and it sounds a whole lot better with movies.

No matter which you decide on, both offer excellent value and a definite upgrade path should you wish to enhance the system down the road.

Star Wars costume turns real two-legged robot into AT-ST

Oregon State University's Cassie robot is a bipedal dynamo that can balance itself and go for walks. Cassie already bears a passing resemblance to the two-legged AT-ST (All Terrain Scout Transport) killing machines from Star Wars, so Cassie's humans decided to dress the bot up as one with a custom costume.

The university's Dynamic Robotics Lab created the corrugated costume for Halloween, but then went the extra parsec and made a short video showing Cassie blasting off lasers and stomping through a forest.

The video is a nod to the Battle of Endor from Return of the Jedi. There's even an Ewok stand-in.

Fortunately for humanity, Cassie is designed to show how robots in the future could deliver packages, help the elderly or assist in emergency situations that are too dangerous for humans. OSU spinoff company Agility Robotics is commercializing the robot.

Now we just need to convince Boston Dynamics to dress its SpotMini dog robot up as an AT-AT and arrange a play date with Cassie.

Stop Rinsing Your Teeth With Water After Brushing. Here's Why

Stop Rinsing Your Teeth With Water After Brushing. Here's Why

This story is part of Home Tips, CNET's collection of practical advice for getting the most out of your home, inside and out.

You already know that brushing your teeth twice a day is considered the best dental hygiene practice. But did you know you should skip rinsing your mouth after? I used to rinse thoroughly after brushing my teeth to remove any remnants of toothpaste left in my mouth. But this method isn't the best and I only found out last year while scrolling through TikTok.

Instead, I now spit out as much toothpaste as I can without swishing with water so I can allow the toothpaste to do its work just a little longer. However, I wasn't sure why I was doing this -- or what the benefits were -- until I spoke with an expert.

I talked to Dr. Edmond Hewlett, consumer advisor for the American Dental Association and professor at UCLA School of Dentistry, to find out why you shouldn't rinse your mouth with water after brushing your teeth. Here's the answer.

See also: Best Electric Toothbrush for 2022

Why it's important to skip rinsing with water after brushing your teeth

Fluoride is an important ingredient in toothpaste that helps make the enamel harder and more resistant to acids that cause cavities. Hewlett says it's the most well-established effective ingredient in toothpaste, so make sure yours has fluoride in it.

When you brush your teeth, you're cleaning any film and bacteria from food and sugary drinks. When you go a step further and skip rinsing, you're leaving the fluoride from the toothpaste in your mouth for a longer time, giving you a better effect from the fluoride.

Wait at least 15 minutes after brushing to drink water. After brushing your teeth, Hewlett explains, your saliva will clear the toothpaste out so you won't taste it all day.

What if you've been rinsing all your life?

If you're just finding out about this tip, you may be thinking you've been undoing all your hard work of brushing every day. But that's not true. Hewlett says as long as you brush the standard two times a day for two minutes each time, the fluoride will remain in your mouth to help protect your teeth.

You're still doing what you need to do to have good oral health to protect your teeth. The idea of not rinsing is just an extra step to help the fluoride be even more effective.

"When you measure a person's fluoride levels in saliva, if they don't rinse, there's more fluoride," Hewlett said. But it's not going to be a waste of your time if you do rinse. He said research is still being done to determine the difference it makes in the long term to prevent cavities.

whitening toothpaste

Check that your toothpaste contains fluoride.

Sarah Mitroff/CNET

Your specific dental health also plays a role

There are different risk levels for getting cavities per person, Hewlett said.

"If you typically don't get cavities, then you should continue using fluoride toothpaste. The decision to rinse or not to rinse after brushing probably won't make a difference."

On the other hand, for those who struggle with cavities, not rinsing is probably a better decision. Additionally, you should get help from your dentist to find out why you're getting cavities regularly -- for instance, it could be your eating habits, snacking on sugary foods or not brushing your teeth regularly. If you're at higher risk for cavities, you should do everything you can to help prevent them.

Is it OK to use mouthwash to rinse your teeth after brushing?

It's OK as long as you use a mouthwash that also contains fluoride so you can still get the same effect. Otherwise, without fluoride, it's similar to rinsing with water.

More teeth brushing tips

Here are some additional tips for keeping your oral health up to par.

  • Always use a soft bristle toothbrush, and never medium or hard. Hewlett says anything but soft can increase the risk of gum recession.
  • It doesn't matter if you floss before or after you brush your teeth, as long as you floss once a day to remove plaque and stuck food.
  • You don't have to aggressively brush your teeth to get them clean. While scrubbing your dishes with extra force may make them extra clean, it's not necessary for your teeth and can also lead to gum recession.
  • Gently brush along the gum line with a soft bristle brush to help prevent gum disease.
  • Always consult with your dentist for personalized advice. They understand what your oral health profile looks like.

For more, here's the best time to brush your teeth in the morning.

Huawei's P50 flagship series set to launch on July 29

More than a year after the launch of its predecessor, Huawei's next-gen flagship phone, the P50 series, is set to be unveiled at a launch event on July 29, the company announced on Tuesday on various social media channels.

The series will mark the beginning of "a new era of mobile imaging," Richard Yu, head of Huawei's consumer business group, revealed in a post on Weibo, saying a "new mobile imaging technology" will come with their release. Next Thursday's event is a dedicated China-only launch, but the P50 series is also set to receive a broader international rollout presumably to existing markets including the EU and the UK. The lineup is rumoured to consist of three models -- the P50, P50 Pro and P50 Pro Plus.

Huawei is attempting to make a comeback after US sanctions contributed to the erosion of its global smartphone market share. Over the last few years, the Trump administration has slapped a series of tough sanctions on the Chinese company, which resulted in its previously best-selling smartphones shipping without Google's popular software and apps, among other consequences. Restrictions on Huawei buying US-made components also meant the company had to stop making the own-brand Kirin chipsets that power its phones.

At a launch event in June, Huawei unveiled its own mobile operating system called HarmonyOS designed to replace Google Mobile Services on its smartphones as well as an array of consumer devices. It also used last month's event to tease the P50 series, but didn't share at launch date.

"For reasons you are all aware of, a launch date has not been set," Yu said at the event.

Correction: An earlier version of this article used a headline indicating an incorrect launch date. Update to correct it to July 29.

15 unexpected air fryer recipes you have to try

You expect the almighty air fryer to turn out crisp fried chicken, crunchy french fries and other goodies with that key f-word in their names. But the air fryer is a lot more versatile than you might think. From hard boiled eggs to molten lava cakes and even homemade bagels, there are scores of intriguing air fryer recipes to try.

Read more: The hunt for the best air fryer | 7 tips for using an air fryer

What are the benefits of an air fryer?

Like the near-universally adored Instant Pot, the air fryer promises faster cooking and a high degree of versatility (so it seems only natural that the Instant Pot people have finally come out with their own air fryer, which one-ups some of its competitors by adding a rotisserie function).

The thing that makes any air fryer so good at both crisping foods and cooking them quickly is its hot air circulation -- basically, it's a form of countertop convection oven. While it obviously handles traditionally deep-fried foods with aplomb (and makes them healthier, since far less oil is required), its design makes it great for lots of other things too, from certain baked goods to roasted garlic.

What can you make in an air fryer?

The better question might be: What can't you make in an air fryer? These are just 15 of the most surprising air fryer recipes we found. So if you've been waffling over whether you should get yet another kitchen gadget, these easy recipes might be just the thing that finally pushes you over the edge.

Air fryer mac and cheese

Pasta is probably not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of an air fryer, but you can use the gadget to make ravishing toasted ravioli with a crisp breadcrumb crust. (Air fryer pasta chips are also a thing.) And, veering from crunchy to creamy, it can make a comforting one-pot mac and cheese too!

Get the Air Fryer Mac and Cheese recipe.

Air fryer hard boiled eggs

By now, everyone knows you can make perfect hard-cooked eggs in the Instant Pot, but the air fryer can give it a run for its money on that front -- and some air fryer models can fit even more eggs at once, which makes it a real boon to meal preppers and any party hosts who plan on serving deviled eggs.

Get the Air Fryer Hard Boiled Eggs recipe.

Air fryer lobster tails

The air fryer can cook all kinds of seafood too, from coconut shrimp to simple salmon -- but if you're feeling flush, go for lobster tails. They only take about six minutes, and there's no waiting for a pot to boil.

Get the Air Fryer Lobster Tails recipe.

Air fryer steak

If you want surf and turf, air fryer steak also happens to be delicious, according to several sources on the internet. While it might not be quite the same as grilled -- or seared in a white-hot cast iron skillet -- it's a great alternative option when you need one.

Get the Air Fryer Steak recipe.

Air fryer corn on the cob

It feels like it's time for a veggie interlude, and there are many air fryer vegetable recipes out there, from oil-free air fryer potato chips and air fryer baked potatoes to crisp air fryer brussels sprouts and beyond. But since it is still summer, it's worth noting you can make air fryer corn on the cob -- perfect for when you don't want to fire up the grill for a couple ears but boiled corn just won't cut it.

Get the Air Fryer Corn on the Cob recipe.

Air fryer bagels

We're talking freshly made, from-scratch, incredibly easy bagels... made in the air fryer. Boiled bagel purists may not be satisfied, but for the rest of us, this is what they call a game changer. As bagels go, they're pretty healthy, too! Better stock up on that Everything But the Bagel Sesame Seasoning.

Get the Air Fryer Bagels recipe.

Air fryer grilled cheese

Grilled cheese, while easy, can burn and stick to the pan and soak up a lot of butter -- not necessarily a bad thing, taste-wise. But you can make it in an air fryer for a faster, healthier, foolproof option with the perfect ratio of super crunchy outside to gooey melted cheese innards. It works great with gluten-free bread too, so everyone can get in on the action. (And try it with vegan cheese if you don't eat dairy.)

Get the Air Fryer Grilled Cheese recipe.

Air fryer strawberry hand pies

Homemade Pop Tarts (or hand pies, if you prefer) are dangerously easy in the air fryer. All it takes is refrigerated pie crust plus your favorite jam or jelly (or Nutella), and a simple glaze to top it off. A similar shortcut involves using pre-made bread dough for easy air fryer cinnamon rolls, but I can't resist the pull of '90s nostalgia -- or sprinkles, for that matter.

Get the Air Fryer Strawberry Pop Tarts recipe.

Air fryer s'mores

Sometimes your s'mores craving strikes when there's no campfire around. Most times, that means quick microwave s'mores, but the air fryer is just as easy and it actually toasts the outside of your marshmallow. Nuking's got nothing on that.

Get the Air Fryer S'mores recipe.

Air fryer crispy tofu

Love the crispy tofu you get from takeout joints but hate all the grease (and/or just not up for deep-frying at home)? Same. The air fryer will give you ultra crisp tofu cubes in no time at all, with hardly any oil to speak of. Meatless Monday just got a lot easier -- and more delicious.

Get the Crispy Air Fryer Tofu recipe.

Air fryer roasted garlic

Roasted garlic is one of those quietly magical ingredients that improves almost anything it touches. It's easy to make in the oven, but if you'd rather not turn it on, the air fryer's got you covered. It takes far less time, too, which means you're never more than 30 minutes away from mellow umami goodness to spread on bread, mash into potatoes or mix into mayonnaise.

Get the Air Fryer Roasted Garlic recipe.

Air fryer bacon onion rings

Whether you're on a gluten-free or keto diet or just love finding new ways to eat bacon, these bacon-wrapped onion rings are just what your burger (and your life) has been missing. They only take nine minutes to make, so they also make a perfect last-minute party appetizer... or midnight snack.

Get the Air Fryer Bacon Onion Rings recipe.

Air fryer lasagna

Thought we were done with pasta? Never. This air fryer lasagna is ready in well under an hour and is made in a mini loaf pan, so it's the perfect serving for one (but larger air fryers can fit two at a time). It's vegan, but you can adapt it to use whatever ingredients you like. It also freezes well, so it's another fantastic meal prep option.

Get the Air Fryer Lasagna recipe.

Air fryer pumpkin seeds

If you like to keep relatively healthy homemade snacks on hand, the air fryer can turn out plenty, from crunchy air fryer chickpeas to shattering-crisp air fryer kale chips. But come fall, these easy pumpkin seeds are roasted in just 15 minutes. They're perfect with any seasoning you like, savory or sweet.

Get the Air Fryer Pumpkin Seeds recipe.

Air fryer molten chocolate lava cakes

By now, you're probably thinking an air fryer sounds pretty sweet. But if you need one final nudge, here it is: You can bake molten chocolate cakes in it. (You can also make them gluten-free!) Really, what more do you need to know?

Android 13 Beta 3 Launches, Hits Platform Stability

The third beta of Android 13 has launched, Google announced Wednesday.

Beta 3's arrival means the official release of Android 13 is drawing closer. Another beta is planned for July. After that, the final release will likely happen this fall alongside the release of the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro phones.

The upcoming OS version has reached the platform stability milestone, Google said, meaning it's finalized enough that app developers can roll out compatibility updates without having to worry about any app-facing changes to the platform.

If you own a Google Pixel, you have the option of downloading this beta through the Android Beta Program, but be aware that betas are typically buggy. If you do decide to download it, be sure to back up your device first

Google showed off Android 13's new features at its I/O conference in May. The update will implement end-to-end encrypted group chats, improvements to Google Wallet and bolstered security features.
