AI Arrives for Serious Photo Editing, Not Just Smartphone Snapshots

AI Arrives for Serious Photo Editing, Not Just Smartphone Snapshots

Software maker Skylum released on Thursday a new version of its Luminar Neo photo editing tool that uses artificial intelligence to handle what used to be mundane but time-consuming tasks.

Luminar Neo can automatically remove power lines in backgrounds or erase dark blotches caused by dust on your camera's image sensor. It can also create a depth map that lets you apply changes to scene elements depending on whether they're in the foreground, middle distance or background.

The software's new AI tools, which were trained with real-world data, are an example of tasks that are out of the reach of traditional data processing algorithms. AI technology, which uses techniques based on human brains, is widely used to spruce up smartphone shots. Luminar Neo, however, shows the spread of these approaches to heavy-duty PC tools, too.

Skylum has put AI front and center with its Luminar software, which is designed to let photographers quickly jazz up their shots without lots of fiddling. That doesn't guarantee it'll stay ahead of Adobe, the 800-pound gorilla of photo editing, though.

Luminar added a feature called AI Sky Enhancer in 2019 that lets photographers quickly select the sky, a part of the scene people often want to edit for color and brightness. Adobe's Lightroom and Photoshop got their own AI-powered sky selection feature in 2021. The Adobe apps also can use AI to select subjects and increase photo resolution.

Expect more AI as it matures within the computing industry. Apple's M1 processors bring dedicated AI acceleration circuitry to Macs, which Luminar and Adobe software both employ. On Windows, Luminar taps into Intel's OpenVino software to bring AI software to its processors, Skylum said.

Luminar Neo, a sequel to the earlier Luminar software, costs $79 and runs on both Windows and Mac machines.

Xiaomi's budget-friendly Redmi 2 appears at MWC

Xiaomi's Redmi 2 was announced earlier this year in January, but hasn't yet made its way outside of China. Aloysius Low/CNET

BARCELONA -- While not available for sale just yet outside of China, the wallet-friendly Xiaomi Redmi 2 made a brief appearance on the Mobile World Congress show floor. However, you won't be able to find it at the stands. I was lucky to be handed one for a quick hands-on, and I came away impressed.

While the name suggests that this phone is the second version of the Redmi, it's actually the third phone in the line. The Redmi had a follow-up last year with the Redmi 1S, which sported a faster processor and more storage than its predecessor. The Redmi 2 obviously improves on the 1S, with a newer 64-bit processor from Qualcomm, a slightly larger 2,200mAh battery and dual-SIM 4G with support for both TDD and FDD bands.

The Redmi 2 has already launched in China for 699 yuan, which converts to around $110, £75 or AU$140. It's on sale in other Chinese markets too, such as Hong Kong and Taiwan, and is likely to be rolled out soon to the other countries in which Xiaomi currently sells its products: Singapore, Malaysia, India, Indonesia and the Philippines.

That said, don't expect to see Xiaomi launch the sub-$120 Redmi 2 in the US. Xiaomi's Hugo Barra has said earlier in an event in the US that while the company will be opening a version of its Mi Store, it won't be selling its phones there just yet.

But if you're keen, there are online third-party sites that you can order the phone from, but bear in mind these devices will likely not support Google Play services, and you'll have to pay a slight premium that will bump up the cost of the phone from its super-cheap price.

Hangouts Will Shut Down This Fall as Google Moves People to Chat

Hangouts Will Shut Down This Fall as Google Moves People to Chat

Google Hangouts is officially shutting down in November. The search giant is prompting people still using Hangouts to migrate over to Chat as part of its plan to retire the aging messaging platform, the company said in a blog post Monday. Google already transitioned enterprise users earlier this year.

On the Hangouts mobile app, people are being asked to switch to Chat. For those using Hangouts on Gmail through a web browser, Google said it will upgrade people to Chat next month. For most, conversations will automatically be migrated over from Hangouts to Chat, Google said.

Google is also encouraging users to use Google Takeout, the company's data exportation tool, to download their data before Hangouts ceases operation this November.

Google Hangouts, which launched in 2013, was the company's chat platform inside Google Plus, a now-defunct social network. Google then added chat functionality to other products, such as Gmail. In 2017, Google launched Chat, a messaging tool for enterprise customers. Chat brought with it new features such as group conversations, side-by-side editing in Docs, Slides and Sheets, and communication within Spaces, the company's collaboration tool.

Google is moving people from Hangouts to Chat for reasons that include security and regulations.

Chat offers stronger phishing protections by detecting malicious links using real-time data, the company said in a 2020 blog post. US and EU regulations would also make VoIP services subject to the same laws. It's why Google removed the call phone feature from Hangouts and issued refunds for remaining call credits. Plus, having engineers work on one chat app as opposed to two could be a better allocation of resources.

Honor Magic 4 Pro Brings Potent Cameras and Google Services

Honor's latest flagship phone, the Magic 4, brings a suite of top-end features including the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon chips, an impressive-sounding camera system and the welcome return of Google services.

Honor was a sub-brand of Huawei, but it was siphoned off into its own business last year. That's a huge boost for Honor: While it was part of Huawei officially, it was subject to the same restrictions imposed on the company by the US. Most notably, it wasn't allowed to use Google services, which limits the everyday use of the phone. That's still the case with Huawei's latest flagship, the P50 Pro

Now that Honor is its own entity, it's able to use Google services again, meaning its new handset can use all of Google's products including Gmail, Chrome and, crucially, the Google Play Store, which allows access to all of the Android apps on its shelves.

The phone itself has some impressive hardware on board, including Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, backed up by up by 12GB of RAM. The large 6.81-inch display has a 2,848x1,312-pixel resolution along with a 120Hz refresh rate. The 4,600-mAh battery supports 100-watt fast charging, taking the phone from empty to 50% full in just 15 minutes.

honor-magic4-series

The Magic 4 Pro will come in a variety of colors.

Honor

On the back of the phone is a multicamera setup, with the lenses arranged in a cool-looking ring which Honor hilariously calls "The Eye of Muse." The cameras include a 50-megapixel main camera, a 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera and a 64-megapixel telephoto camera which provides up to 3.5x optical zoom or 100x digital zoom. Both Huawei's and Honor's cameras have been good before now so I'm keen to see how this one compares to the likes of the Galaxy S22 Ultra and Pixel 6 Pro

It can record video at 4K, but it can do it in Log format. Log format is typically used by professional video producers to capture more dynamic range, and it has more scope for applying effects in post-production.

At the time of writing, Honor hasn't given pricing details, but the company has typically kept its prices affordable and I'm hoping the same will be true here. That said, with its range of top-end features, I'm not expecting a price much below $1,000.

The Magic 4 Pro will be joined by an entry-level model, the Honor Magic 4. The Magic 4 shares many of the Pro's exciting features -- including the processor and large display -- but pares down some of the camera features and has a slower, but still fast, 65W charger.

Honor has also launched the active noise-cancelling Honor Earbuds 3 Pro. There's also the Honor Watch GS 3, an elegant-looking smartwatch with a 1.43-inch round display. The GS 3 uses a variety of sensors to track over 100 different workout types. No prices for any of the accessories were available at the time of writing.

This $1 Hot Wheels car works with GoPro -- but there's a catch

GoPro is hitching a ride with Hot Wheels, as the two companies team up to create the first die-cast toy car that attaches to a GoPro action camera. That means Hot Wheels fans can capture video of fast-flying toy car stunts from the driver's seat, so to speak.

The Hot Wheels car itself isn't high-tech. Called the Zoom In, the toy goes on sale this month for the same price as any basic Hot Wheels car, just $1.09. What makes it unique is that you can snap in a GoPro Hero Session or Hero5 Session camera, sold separately for considerably more. These cube-shaped cameras sit snug in the center of the toy, locked in place by a bar that grips the top.

The car should be a hit with anyone who loves Hot Wheels -- or with GoPro fans looking to put a new spin on their action cam shots. Kids can follow livestreaming footage from a tablet or phone app. And the rugged camera shoots in high speed to capture epic crashes in slow motion.

(I just received one of these Zoom In cars from Mattel, so I'll be taking it for a test drive soon -- stay tuned!)

But here's something that may throw buyers for a loop: The two GoPro Session cameras that fit in the car are discontinued models. You should still be able to easily find the Session and Hero5 Session for sale, but supplies may be limited.

This month marks the 50th anniversary of Hot Wheels. The company has put cameras in its cars before. Back in 2011, Mattel released the Video Racer Micro Camera Car, a Hot Wheels car with a camera built inside to record 12-minute clips. You can still find it sold online for about $15.

Of course, that Video Racer car won't get you 4K shots or survive being thrown into water like a GoPro can, but the toy did have something a Session camera lacks: a mini LCD screen for instant playback.

The Zoom In Hot Wheels car rolls out to stores this month for $1.09. The GoPro, however, is sold separately for $200.

GoPro's new Hero camera looks just like the company's Hero5 and Hero6 cameras, and that's no accident.

Despite being an entry-level model, the Hero shares key design features with its higher-end linemates, namely a 2-inch touchscreen and a rugged body that's waterproof without the need for a polycarbonate housing.

That's something GoPro didn't do with its last Hero, which had little to offer beyond good video quality and a low price. And while the price of the new model is $70 more at $199 (£199, AU$299), those design features apparently mean a lot to potential buyers.

"Our research and feedback shows consumers really like having a touchscreen, so we wanted to give people that familiar experience at an entry-level price, and Hero satisfies both," said a GoPro spokeswoman. Being waterproof to 30 feet (10 meters) without a housing is also a huge selling point for GoPro's cameras, she said.

So where does that leave the company's other $199 camera, the tiny cube-shaped Hero5 Session? It's going away. The Session will continue to be sold at retailers through the first half of 2018, but is no longer available on GoPro.com. Basically, as happens with other discontinued cameras, retailers will sell through what's available, but once it's gone, it's gone.

That's a shame since the Session definitely has an edge on the Hero when it comes to the camera's capabilities. GoPro kept the Hero's shooting options to a bare minimum:

  • Record video at 1080p or 1440p at 60 or 30 frames per second (fps) in MP4 at 60Mbps
  • Snap 10-megapixel photos
  • Burst shoot at 10fps
  • Capture time-lapse photos and video at 0.5-second intervals

If you just read that list and wondered why there's no 4K or slow-mo options for video or raw capture or low-light settings for photos, this camera isn't for you. The Hero is aimed squarely at casual and first-time users who want to shoot and share experiences they can't grab with a phone.

The shooting options might be lean, but to help balance things out, GoPro added voice controls and electronic video stabilization. Plus, with the built-in Wi-Fi, you can send clips straight to your phone as soon as you stop recording and have them instantly turned into an edited video with GoPro's mobile app.

At the start of the year, GoPro dropped the price of its premium model, the Hero6 Black, from $499 to $399. The addition of the $199 Hero along with the $299 Hero5 Black ($445 at Amazon) moves GoPro's plan forward to return to a good, better, best product strategy.

"What we've learned is people want 'good, better, best' options from us. So with the new Hero we now have cameras that are characteristically GoPro -- durable, waterproof, cool design -- with feature sets for every level of user."

The GoPro Hero is available today at retailers and direct from GoPro.

Refurbished iPhone Deals Start at Just $130 Today Only

Going for a refurbished phone is a great idea if you don't need the latest and greatest model each year. It's also a good way to save money on a first phone for a child or a backup device to keep around the house. Woot is running a one-day sale on several previous-gen iPhone models with prices from just $140 making today a great opportunity to nab a refurb handset for less.

All the devices you'll find at this sale are "scratch and dent"-grade refurbs. According to Woot, that means that you can expect these items to exhibit moderate signs of wear and tear, but they have all been thoroughly inspected to make sure they're in full working condition.

The most recent device in the sale is 2020's second-gen iPhone SE, which is available from $170. For that price, you'll get the 4.7-inch device with 64GB of storage and a 12-megapixel rear camera. Though it's a couple of years old at this point, it's equipped with Apple's powerful A13 Bionic chip and will continue to get software updates for some time, including this fall's iOS 16 update.

If you want to ditch the home button and go for an iPhone with an edge-to-edge display, models on sale include the iPhone X, iPhone XR, and iPhone XS Max. While they're no longer the best iPhone models, all of these phones also make the iOS 16 compatibility list and prices start at just $220.

Buying a Google Pixel 6 for Black Friday? This deal is better than Google's own sale

Buying a Google Pixel 6 for Black Friday? This deal is better than Google's own sale

Hoping to score a deal on Google's Pixel 6 phone? It's worth hunting for a Black Friday sale: Google's phone is a CNET Editors' Choice Award winner.

Google itself does have a Pixel on sale on its store, but it's the Pixel 5A for $50 off, not the Pixel 6, which the search giant is selling for $599 unlocked.

The Pixel 6 has new camera hardware and features wide and ultrawide lenses, as well as the neat Magic Eraser tool in Google Photos that can remove unwanted objects -- and people -- from your pictures. "I can't think of a better phone to recommend" at the price, CNET's Patrick Holland said in his review . Here's what we know about Pixel 6 sales for Black Friday, if you're looking to save money on an already affordable phone.

Best Buy's Pixel 6 Black Friday sale

A $549 128GB Pixel 6 is available at Best Buy, just for Verizon and T-Mobile customers, if you activate when you purchase. That's $50 cheaper than you can find elsewhere.

Best Buy had the Pixel 6 on sale for $499, but that price was for a new line or new account, not an upgrade. And right now it's sold out.

Target's Pixel 6 Black Friday sale

Target did have the Pixel 6 on sale on Nov. 21 with an early Black Friday deal -- knocking $50 off the 128GB phone to $549. But right now, the phone is out of stock on Target's site.

The price was for the unlocked version, meaning there are no special requirements or a set carrier, making this a great deal if you're looking to upgrade. It also means it does not support mmWave. Just the Verizon and AT&T versions handle that flavor of 5G.

For now, there's no news about the Pixel 6 Pro getting a Black Friday price cut, but we will post all the latest news about Black Friday deals on the Pixel series here, so keep checking back.
