Moto G Stylus 5G review: One of the longest-lasting batteries in any phone

Moto G Stylus 5G review: One of the longest-lasting batteries in any phone

If the new Moto G Stylus 5G from Motorola seems familiar, that's because it's the follow up to January's Moto G Stylus, which costs less and doesn't have 5G. The Stylus 5G comes with a redesigned stylus, Android 11, a new security layer from Motorola's parent company Lenovo, 256GB of storage, 6GB of RAM and a new processor. It includes those beloved Moto gestures for shortcuts like twisting your wrist to open the camera app. The Moto G Stylus 5G is a good phone and did pretty much everything I threw at it for a week. Best of all, it costs $400 (roughly £290 or AU$520 converted).

But the Moto G Stylus 5G is in an awkward position in Motorola's lineup. It's the most expensive G-series phone this year and yet offers a lot of value as a budget 5G phone. It's not for everyone, mainly because Motorola has other phones that might be a better fit and value.

If you don't care about 5G or improvements like a new stylus, then the $300 Moto G Stylus is the way to go, especially since it's on sale for $279 at the time I'm writing this review. If you're not interested in a stylus, and just want a solid 5G phone that won't break your budget, get the Motorola One 5G Ace. It costs the same and has a better processor.

But if you're looking for a good budget phone that comes with a basic stylus and support for 5G, then the Moto G Stylus 5G is there for you. It has features more expensive phones lack, including a headphone jack, expandable storage (up to 1TB) and great battery life. It also comes with a charging cable and wall charger in the box.

On the back are four cameras, the same ones on the Moto G Stylus, except for the macro camera which got a slight bump in resolution. The main 48-megapixel camera is actually pretty decent. Like other Moto phones it combines multiple pixels into one for less image noise, brighter photos and better detail. I took a lot of great shots with it.

The main camera can capture an impressive amount of detail. Look at the leaves in the trees and the texture of the bricks.

The main camera is impressive for a $400 phone.

The ultrawide camera is just OK. Details in photos are soft and pictures don't have the same image quality the main camera offers. The depth camera works with the main camera for portrait mode photos which are pretty good. The macro camera seems like a novelty. If the ultrawide and macro cameras had the same image quality as the main camera, that would be a different story.

On the front is a 16-megapixel camera which takes good photos. The Stylus 5G can record HD video (no 4K). Perhaps my favorite feature is Dual-Capture which records videos with the front and rear cameras simultaneously. It's a great way to see someone's reaction and the thing they're reacting to at the same time.

There are four rear cameras including a depth camera for portrait mode photos.

The Moto G Stylus 5G comes in Cosmic Emerald with a plastic back that unfortunately collects more fingerprints than Det. Sheehan in Mare of Easttown. It has a 6.8-inch FHD display that indoors looks decent, but didn't wow me. The display isn't bright and outside it's difficult to see.

It has a large battery, which I was reminded of every time I picked up the Stylus 5G. It's a heavy phone that gets its heft from the 5,000-mAh battery, meant to counter the extra drain from 5G connectivity. In daily use, it got through a day and a half, sometimes two days before I needed to charge it. Battery tests on the Moto G Stylus 5G for continuous video playback on Airplane mode clocked an average of 28 hours, 31 minutes. That's the second longest time out of all of the phones we tested this year. The only phone that lasted longer was the Motorola Moto G Play (2021), which lasted over 30 hours. One of the most obvious reasons both of these Motorola phones last so long on a single charge is because the screens on each are pretty dim.

I tested the Stylus 5G on T-Mobile's 5G network in South Carolina. Speeds weren't great and would frequently drop back to LTE, which is exactly what happened on other 5G phones I've tested here. If you want a 5G phone, do a little research first into your carrier's 5G network and whether it's good or not. For me, based on my time on T-Mobile's 5G network, I'd be just fine buying a non-5G Moto G Stylus and saving $130.

Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G

The stylus has a new cylindrical shape, making it easier to put back into the phone.

Patrick Holland/CNET

The stylus is rudimentary and akin to the one on the LG Stylo instead of the feature-packed S-Pen on the Galaxy Note line. The stylus is now completely round from top-to-bottom which makes it easier to put back into the phone. There is also a software notification that reminds you when it's removed. Using the stylus for handwriting was not an enjoyable experience. The lag is pretty bad. Doodling is fun, but isn't enough to sell me on getting the phone.

The Moto G Stylus 5G has a Snapdragon 480 5G processor which worked well for pretty much everything I did from playing games like PUBG Mobile and Alto's Adventure to watching Loki on Disney Plus to just scrolling through social media. In benchmark tests, the Moto G Stylus 5G scored lower in single-core tests than the January Moto G Stylus. But in multicore and gaming tests, the Stylus 5G did better. The similarly priced Motorola One 5G Ace scored even better. Check out the results below.

Motorola Edge Plus hands-on: A $1,000 5G phone with premium specs

Motorola, a company best known for its budget and midrange phones, on Wednesday took an enormous step forward into the premium phone market and launched the Motorola Edge and Edge Plus. Both phones join the Motorola Razr as high-end offerings from the Chicago-based company. Whereas the Razr was criticized for its middle-of-the-road tech, the Edge and Edge Plus are brimming with cutting-edge specs that rival Samsung, OnePlus and Apple. It is as if Motorola went to the specs grocery store and emptied the shelves.

The $1,000 Motorola Edge Plus has the same price as the Samsung Galaxy S20, the same size screen as the Galaxy S20 Plus and the same 5,000-mAh battery and 108-megapixel camera as the Galaxy S20 Ultra. (The Edge Plus is not currently available in the UK and Australia, but as a guide, the Galaxy S20 starts at £799 and AU$1,349 in those countries. The Edge will cost £549 in the UK.)

The Edge is meant as a slightly pared-down and less expensive option. Motorola hasn't announced the price, but the more affordable phone will launch sometime this summer. Motorola is taking a similar approach to both phones as OnePlus did with its 8 and 8 Pro, although both Edge phones use the same size display.

The Motorola Edge Plus has 5G

We've seen a lot of phones with 5G launched this year, and the Edge was designed from the start to run on 5G. The Motorola Edge Plus supports both sub-6 and millimeter wave up to 5 gigabits per second. Motorola claims its optimizations will result in the "fastest ever" 5G. We'll have to test those claims.

The Motorola Edge Plus was built from the ground up to be a 5G phone.

Sarah Tew/CNET

The Edge Plus has a 108-megapixel rear camera

There are three rear cameras on the Motorola Edge Plus. The main camera has a 108-megapixel sensor which combines groups of four pixels to produce a 27-megapixel image. Motorola says that the sensor is almost three times larger than the 12-megapixel sensors used in other phones, which could help improve brightness and reduce image noise.

I'm excited to try out the Edge Plus camera system in more depth. But the few photos I took looked good on Edge Plus' screen.

The Edge Plus can record 6K videos with 20-megapixel photo grabs during recording. Despite the Edge Plus having a Snapdragon 865 processor, which is capable of 8K recording, Motorola thought 6K better paired to the main camera sensor.

There are three rear cameras: A main wide-angle camera, a telephoto camera and an ultrawide-angle camera.

Sarah Tew/CNET

There's also a video portrait mode, a special long exposure mode with a shutter speed of up to 32-seconds and Night Vision which stacks eight photos and combines them into a single shot that's brighter, sharper and has more detail.

And then on the front, housed in the hole-punch display, is a 25-megapixel selfie camera.

The Motorola Edge Plus has a 90Hz waterfall display

The name Edge refers to the 6.7-inch "endless edge" display that wraps around the sides of the phone. While it's not the first phone to have a waterfall display, it is absolutely stunning in-person. The edge can light up different colors to show your battery charging, alarms and notifications. There's also a neat widget you can access for shortcuts. Motorola built-in grip and touch suppression to minimize any accidental screen touches.

The display wraps around the edges and has a tiny hole for the 25-megapixel front-facing camera to poke through.

Sarah Tew/CNET

If the edges are too much, you can go into Settings and select which apps use the edges and which don't. When the edges are off, they turn black and the screen looks like a normal regular display. During my time with the phone, I didn't see an "all or nothing" switch for turning the edge on and off.

The edges get well-used in the new Moto Gametime mode. You can set them up as shoulder buttons or reposition your on-screen buttons so they're in a better place for gameplay.

I'm not sure how helpful the Edge screen will be in daily use. It's obviously reminiscent of Samsung Galaxy phones and their edge displays. But the gaming functionality pushes it toward gaming phones such as the Asus ROG Phone 2 and Black Shark 2 Pro but without the glowing logo.

Speaking of gaming phones, the Edge's 21:9 ratio screen has a 90Hz variable refresh rate which makes animations look smoother, text and images more crisp and can make gaming (especially high-frame-rate games) more immersive. You can also choose to override the variable setting and lock it in to 60Hz or 90Hz.

The 90Hz display is impressive and automatically adjusts its refresh rate depending on what content is on screen.

Sarah Tew/CNET

Motorola Edge Plus vs. Motorola Edge

In many ways the Motorola Edge is fundamentally the same phone with the same display as the Edge Plus, but made with a more svelte body. It has Sub-6 5G support but not the faster millimeter-wave flavor of 5G. Instead of a Snapdragon 865 found in the Edge Plus, it has a Snapdragon 765 processor. Instead of a 5,000-mAh battery, it has a 4,500-mAh battery. Instead of an 108-megapixel main camera, it has a 64-megapixel main camera.

The biggest difference is price. We don't know exactly what that will be yet, but we have to surmise that if the Motorola Edge Plus is $999 then the Motorola Edge will be cheaper when it's released sometime this summer.

The Motorola Edge is a slightly scaled back and more affordable version of the Edge Plus.

Motorola

Also I should note that in the US the Edge Plus is a Verizon exclusive, but the Edge will be sold unlocked. We look forward to testing out both phones for a review.

New Home Sales See Sharp Drop Off, a Signal US Housing Boom Is Slowing

New home sales dropped sharply in April, missing economists' expectations and signaling that the US housing boom seen during the pandemic may be coming to an end.

Sales of new homes fell 16.6% in April to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 591,000, the lowest level since April 2020, according to the US Commerce Department. Slowing sales are a result of rising interest rates and high home prices pushing buyers out of the market. The average interest rate for a conventional 30-year fixed-rate mortgage is hovering around 5.5%, up from around just 3% at the beginning of this year, making monthly mortgage payments more unaffordable for buyers.

This is the fourth consecutive month of declining new home sales and the biggest monthly drop in nine years.

"Mortgage rates have quickly gone from being a massive tailwind to the housing market to a massive headwind," Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody's Analytics, told Bloomberg. "The higher rates are conflating with the extraordinarily high house prices and crushing affordability."

The median sales price for a new home in April of this year was $450,600, a 19.6% increase from a year ago, the Commerce Department said.

Can Your Car Use E85, the Cheaper Gas Alternative?

Can Your Car Use E85, the Cheaper Gas Alternative?

With gasoline prices continuing to break records, motorists are looking for cheaper alternatives. Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds has signed a law requiring any gas station built or upgraded starting next year to be compatible with E85, a fuel formulation made with 85% corn ethanol.

E85 is significantly less expensive than regular unleaded: In Iowa, where regular unleaded has hit $4.75, E85 averages $3.42 a gallon

But most cars aren't rated to use corn ethanol-based fuel, and experts say the savings with cars that are designed for it are often swallowed up by poor fuel mileage.

"Anything you'd save at the pump, you're going to lose driving your car," John Schupp, owner of Missouri auto repair shop Sci-Tech Automotive, told KMBC in Kansas City.

Here's what you need to know about E85, including how to know if your car can use it, whether it's truly cheaper and what impact it has has on the environment.

What is E85 fuel?

Most formulations of gasoline are E10, or just 10% corn ethanol and 90% gasoline. E85, also called flex-fuel, is a blend of 85% ethanol to 15% gasoline.

Is E85 cheaper than regular gasoline?

Per gallon, E85 is almost always significantly less expensive than regular gas: The national average for regular unleaded on Tuesday was about $5.02. For E85, it was only $3.67.

In California, where gasoline has reached a nationwide high of $6.44, E85 averages $3.60. In Oklahoma, you can find it for as little as $2.89 a gallon.

But flex-fuel vehicles, or FFVs, using the high-ethanol blend have much lower fuel efficiency, Kelly Blue Book reported. In some cases, the difference in mileage is nearly 25%.

As an example, the automotive research firm said, a 2021 Ford F150 pickup could get 21 combined miles per gallon when using gasoline, but only 16 mpg filled with E85.

With a price differential of nearly 30%, or even greater in some areas, it may be worth it for many drivers. In addition, E85 has a higher octane content, which can produce more power in engines designed to use it.

How do I know if my car is rated for E85?

If your automobile can accept E85 fuel, it should have a yellow gas cap, or, if you have a capless fuel filler, a yellow ring around the hole where the nozzle is inserted.

A badge reading "Flex-Fuel," "FFV" or "E85" on the back of the vehicle may also indicate compatibility, according to Kelly Blue Book. And you can always check your owner's manual.

According to market data firm IHS Markit, there were at least 21 million FFVs in the US in 2017, the most recent year for which information was available.

But rising interest in electric vehicles has seen a move away from E85-rated autos. Last year, only Ford and General Motors produced flex-fuel vehicles, and they made only 11 models. That's a serious decrease from 2015, when there were 80 different models from eight carmakers that were rated for E85, according to the Renewable Fuels Association.

E85 fuel has a mixture of 85% corn ethanol to 15% gasoline.

Can I fill up on E85 even if my car isn't rated for it?

While some motorists are tempted to use E85 in a car designed only for conventional gas, or to top off their tank with it, "unless you're driving a vehicle specifically made for the cheaper fuel, using it can cause engine damage," according to Consumer Reports,

"You'll probably have a tow truck taking it to the shop because, after about two tanks of E85, a car that's not equipped for it probably won't run," Schupp told KMBC.

Where is E85 sold?

According to E85Prices.com, there are more than 5,500 gas stations selling E85 flex-fuel, mostly in eastern states, the Midwest and California.

That works out to slightly less than 4% of all retail gas stations in the US.

Is E85 better for the environment?

A 2019 study by the US Department of Agriculture said corn-based ethanol is much cleaner than petroleum, with 39% fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

But a report published in February by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences factored in the cost of land and water use and determined that ethanol leaves a much larger carbon footprint. The carbon intensity of corn-based fuel is "likely at least 24% higher" than that of conventional gas, the researchers said.

Fuels with higher ethanol content, like E15 -- which contains 15% ethanol and 85% gasoline -- are usually prohibited during the summer because it's believed they contribute to smog levels. (Traditional fuel is 10% ethanol and 90% gasoline.)

But in light of the current fuel crisis, the Biden administration has lifted the summertime ban.

Currently, the limited scale of corn ethanol production means it's unlikely to impact climate change much either way. But that could change if demand increases or government regulations mandate that a higher percentage of fuel come from renewable sources.

Polestar 6 Electric Roadster Slated for 2026 Production, Based on the O2 Concept

Polestar 6 Electric Roadster Slated for 2026 Production, Based on the O2 Concept

Swedish performance car company Polestar announced today plans to put an electric convertible into production starting in 2026. Dubbed the Polestar 6, the EV roadster will be based on the gorgeous Polestar O2 electric convertible concept that debuted earlier this year, with reservations opening to interested customers starting today.

The O2 concept arrived back in March at the nexus of "too good to be true" and "a sure thing." On the one hand, convertible sales have been in decline across the industry for years now. On the other hand, the premium market is fairly resistant to this shrinkage and Polestar's modular EV platform sharing could keep development and production costs low enough to justify a low-volume convertible model.

The 500 Polestar 6 LA Concept Edition examples will feature wheels and a color scheme that match the O2 concept.

Polestar

The Polestar 6 will be based on the same bonded aluminum platform as the previously announced Polestar 5 sedan and the same high-performance, 800-volt electric architecture featuring up to 884 horsepower (650 kilowatts) from its dual-motor powertrain and around 663 pound-feet of torque. Polestar is targeting a 3.2-second 0 to 62 mph sprint and a top speed of 155 mph. Expected range, charging speeds and pricing will be released closer to the 2026 launch window.

Polestar is planning a launch run of 500 Polestar 6 LA Concept Edition models for the hardtop convertible with styling inspired by the concept car. These will feature an exclusive Sky blue exterior finish, the Polestar O2 concept's 21-inch wheels and a light leather interior. Each of the 500 special editions will also be uniquely numbered.

The O2's wildest feature is an "autonomous cinematic drone" that can be deployed from the concept roadster at speeds up to 56 mph to track the car on the road and capture video clips that can be edited and shared from the dashboard. We're pretty sure that bit won't make its way into the production Polestar 6.

Polestar's electric lineup is expected to grow significantly over the next few years. Following the plug-in hybrid hot rod Polestar 1 sedan -- since discontinued in 2021 --  and the current Polestar 2 full-electric fastback, the Swedish performance car company plans to launch a Polestar 3 SUV next year, followed by the Polestar 5 sedan in 2024 and, now, the Polestar 6 convertible in 2026. That leaves a Polestar 4-shaped hole in its lineup that we expect will soon be filled.

The spectacular looking Polestar 1 plug-in-hybrid coupe was always meant to be a limited-run model, with just 1,500 total earmarked for production worldwide. The Polestar 1 is now entering its last year of production with the final 500 units available to order, just 150 of which will come to North America.

No powertrain changes have been made for the final model year, and that's fine by us. The Polestar 1 already was one of the most impressive plug-in hybrids out there, and it still offers one of the highest electric ranges out of any PHEV on sale. (It's only beaten by the also extremely rare Karma Revero.) It has a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors at the rear axle, an eight-speed automatic transmission with an integrated starter/generator and a 34-kWh battery pack. Total output is 619 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque, and the EPA says the Polestar 1 has a max EV range of 52 miles.

Nothing about the Polestar 1's looks has changed for the 2021 model year, either. Just five no-cost "colors" are available -- I say colors in quotes because there's white, black, two grays and a dark blue -- and each shade is available in a matte finish for an extra $5,000. The exterior trim is offered in chrome or gloss black, and the awesome 21-inch four-spoke wheels can be had in gloss black, matte-black or a diamond cut finish. On the inside you can get the upholstery in either black or black and white leather.

Appearance stuff aside, the Polestar 1 doesn't have any available packages or optional extras. And that's also a fine thing, as the Polestar 1 already has a whopping price tag of $155,000. The Polestar 1 is a super niche vehicle, but it was always meant to be just that. It's a plug-in-hybrid, carbon-fiber-bodied, two-door coupe with concept-car looks, from a Volvo-run company that will only produce full EVs from now on. There will probably never be another car like the Polestar 1, so if you want to get your hands on one of the final 150 cars, you can get your order in now online or visit one of Polestar's retail spaces.

Intel launches 12th-gen gaming CPUs based on Alder Lake

First detailed at its Architecture Day in August , Intel now delivers the actual 12th-gen Core CPUs based on its Alder Lake design, the overclockable K series of desktop processors designed for gaming and creative work. The initial rollout consists of three CPUs -- the Core i9-12900K, i7-12700K and i5-12600K -- with the usual variant for each, KF versions that are identical but don't include the integrated graphics.

Intel has been shipping the processors to system manufacturers, and you can preorder boxed processors starting today. Some PC companies even anticipated the launch with early announcements of 12th-gen gaming desktops, such as the Acer Predator Orion 7000 in mid-October and the updated Alienware Aurora, which is available starting today.

Intel says it expects to ship hundreds of thousands of K-series CPUs by the end of 2021 and over two million by the end of March 2022. And that's a current estimate, despite rampant chip shortages. Mobile Alder Lake chips will come in early 2022, which likely means we'll hear about them in January around CES 2022. The Intel 7 fab process used in manufacturing the CPUs is just a rebranded iteration of its 10nm Enhanced Superfin, not 7nm.

Alder Lake is the company's hybrid chip layout similar to those in phones and Apple's M1 line, which combines a set of performance-tuned P-cores (its Golden Cove microarchitecture) for high-clock-speed single- or lightly threaded operations with efficiency-tuned E-cores (Gracemont microarchitecture) used for more heavily threaded and background tasks: Think of streaming gameplay, where your system is encoding and transmitting in the background while you're playing in the foreground.

They're the first chips available to work in tandem with Windows 11's Thread Director for more intelligent allocation of the different cores than that of Windows 10.

Leaked benchmarks for the mobile versions and Intel's claims for the new PC chips place the performance bump at far beyond the usual generation-over-generation level, with over 30% improvement on imaging-related tasks like rendering and editing, and around 20% to 30% improvement on frame rates for games that rely to some extent on CPU performance. It also claims that the E-cores perform roughly the same as the 10th-gen chips, which were essentially composed of all P-cores.

Though Alder Lake isn't Intel's first hybrid architecture, it's the first to make it up to the high-performance tier. And these are the first desktop chips to incorporate Intel's integrated Xe graphics, dubbed Intel UHD Graphics 770. Intel has redesigned the CPU's overclocking operation, which was necessary given the dual-core types operation, new graphics (Intel's H series of mobile gaming GPUs never incorporated the Xe graphics) and support for new DDR5-4800 memory (with XMP 3.0 and its expanded profile support).

Access to all the new granular options, as well as one-click overclocking optimized for the dual-core types, is available in the latest version of Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility, XTR 7.5.

12th-gen desktop boxed processors are available for preorder now and flip to standard ordering on Nov. 4.

Intel

Although you can use the 12th-gen CPUs with older components, notably DDR4 memory, they're not backward compatible with the older sockets or chipsets; they need the new 600 series chipset and, for the most flexible overclocking options, the Z690.

The LGA 1700 socket replaces the LGA 1200 and is the first size change since 2004. Other features enabled or supported by the new chip and chipset include up to 16 PCIe 5.0 and four PCIe 4 lanes, a maximum of 128GB RAM (albeit at a slower speed than 64GB or less), 20Gbps USB 3.2, Wi-Fi 6E and 2.5G Ethernet.

It also adds Intel Volume Management Device for smarter and more seamless management of NVMe SSDs over the PCI bus, technology that trickles down from its server architecture, which can eliminate the need for RAID arraying in some cases.

To match the new processor architecture, Intel has tweaked its spec nomenclature, notably the way it describes power requirements. All of these CPUs will be able to run drawing only 125 watts (now referred to as "processor base power"). But with all cores fully loaded -- which Intel calls "maximum turbo power" and used to be thermal design power, or TDP -- they can spike up to 241, 190 or 150 watts for the i9, i7 and i5, respectively.
