The Food and Drug Administration on Friday approved emergency use of the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19vaccines for children as young as 6 months old.
The news comes two days after an expert panel at the FDA gave its approval for emergency use in small children. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention must still give its OK before those kids can start getting their shots, which could happen as early as next week.
In giving its approval, the FDA said that its analysis of the safety and effectiveness of the vaccines was "rigorous and comprehensive" and that it determined that the benefits of both vaccines outweighed their potential risks.
"As we have seen with older age groups, we expect that the vaccines for younger children will provide protection from the most severe outcomes of COVID-19, such as hospitalization and death," FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf said in a statement.
Pfizer's vaccines had previously been approved for use in children at least 5 years old, while the Moderna vaccine had only been approved for use in people ages 18 and up.
For most small children, the Moderna vaccines will be administered in two shots one month apart, though some kids with certain kinds of immunocompromise could receive a third shot at least one month after they get their second, the FDA says.
With the Pfizer vaccine, all kids ages 6 months through 4 years will get three shots, the first two of them three weeks apart, followed by a third dose at least eight weeks later.
The White House has said that the vaccinations could start as early as Tuesday, though vaccine availability could vary state to state.

Nvidia is in advanced talks to acquire chipmaker Arm from SoftBank, according to Bloomberg, which cited anonymous sources. The companies apparently aim to reach a deal in the coming weeks, and the graphics card maker is the only suitor at the moment.
Earlier this month, The Wall Street Journal reported that Japanese conglomerate SoftBank was looking to sell the UK-based Arm, which it bought for $32 billion in 2016.
Apple announced in June that it would overhaul its Mac computers with Arm chips, which are similar to the ones it designs for iPhones and iPads, moving away from the Intel processors it's used for the past 14 years. Arm licenses its chip instruction set -- the collection of commands software can use to control a chip -- to companies like Apple that design their own processors.
Arm and Nvidia declined to comment. Softbank didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Apple has rushed out a pair of updates for iPhones and iPads that fix several security flaws, including a Safari bug that lets websites you visit see your browsing history and other personal data.
Both iOS 15.3 and iPadOS 15.3 fix the Safari issue, as detailed by 9to5Mac, as well as several other vulnerabilities within ColorSync, iCloud and other software as detailed on Apple's support page. Don't expect any new features, as these software updates just patch a handful of current issues.
Like all other iOS 15 updates, iOS 15.3 is free and available to compatible Apple devices: the iPhone 6S and newer iPhone SE (2016), and iPod Touch (7th generation). Similarly, iPadOS 15.3 is free and compatible with these tablets and newer: the iPad (5th generation), iPad Pro (all models), iPad Mini 4 and iPad Air 2.
To update your iPhone or iPad, head to the Settings app > General > Software Update and tap Install Now.
Apple also started rolling out WatchOS 8.4 for Apple Watch users in an unrelated update that fixes bugs and improves performance. To update your Apple Watch, head to the Settings app > General > Software Update, or do the same through the Watch mobile app on your paired iPhone.

Ford is recalling 330,784 Mustangs of the 2015-2017 model years over concerns that their rearview cameras could either be too dim to use or simply cut out altogether.
The issue stems from a faulty wiring harness inside the Mustang's rear decklid that can become loose or damaged. The fix for this issue is luckily pretty simple and involves replacing either the decklid harness or, in some cases, the rearview camera itself.
This recall, like all recalls, will be performed free of charge by your local Ford dealer. Owners of affected vehicles can expect to be notified by Ford via mail on or around March 7. Apple Stores Reportedly Roll Out Tap to Pay on iPhone
Apple has reportedly launched its Tap to Pay iPhone feature in Apple Stores across the US. Customers who visit Apple's retail locations can use their iPhones to make payments with Apple Pay, digital wallets or their contactless debit or credit cards. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman tweeted that the feature began rolling out at Apple Stores on Wednesday.
Apple first announced the news in February, saying that iPhone users will only have to hold their phones or Apple Watch over the merchant's iPhone to complete their transactions. Tap to Pay provides on-screen payment confirmation for both parties once the transaction is complete. Unlike Square's digital payment system, no additional hardware or terminals are necessary. According to the company's original press release, users must have an iPhone XS device or newer in order to use the feature.
Stripe is the first payment platform to offer this option for its business customers, and Apple is teaming up with Mastercard, Visa, American Express and other payment networks to make Tap to Pay seamless. Additionally, the company will work closely with app developers and payment processors to integrate this checkout feature for all iPhone and Apple Watch customers.
Businesses of any size will be able to use the system, including solo merchants you meet at the farmer's market and large retail chains. Though there is no concrete timeline, there are plans to implement Tap to Pay for iPhone nationwide for retailers throughout the year.
CNET reached out to Apple for confirmation but the company hasn't yet responded.

Nvidia's GeForce RTX 3070 Ti is literally the most middling GPU of the past year, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. On almost every gaming performance test I've run, the 3070 Ti delivered the median score in a field of RTX 3000 series and AMD Radeon RX 6000 series cards, more or less.
Nvidia positions the starting-price $599 (£529, AU$979) GPU, which excels at 1440p and entry 4K gaming, as the natural upgrade from the RTX 2070 Super. But if you're looking to save a little money (or potentially a lot, given the state of GPU supplies) even the cheaper RTX 3070 will give you a big performance lift over the previous generation under most conditions. You'll be able to buy it, in theory, starting June 10.

The design of the 3070 Ti is different from that of the 3070; it's about an inch longer and there's a fan on either side of the card, in contrast to the 3070, which has both fans on one side. It still vents out the back of the card. In fact, though it's about 0.5 inch shorter than the RTX 3080 and RTX 3080 Ti, the 3070 Ti bears the most resemblance to the 3080, with the exception of some cosmetics.

On the inside, it has exactly 4.35% more of everything than the 3070: RT cores, CUDA Cores, texture mapping units, streaming multiprocessors and Tensor cores -- almost like the product was designed by an algorithm asking "What GPU can we sell at $599, midway between the RTX 3070 and 3080?" rather than to answer "What do gamers need now?" A bigger difference is the upgrade to higher-bandwidth (by about 30%) GDDR6X memory. The price you pay is a 16% increase over the RTX 3070 in power requirements, as well as the bigger size.
It delivers excellent 1440p performance, but there are very few situations in which it delivers a significant advantage -- in other words, worth the price premium -- over the cheaper RTX 3070 for gaming; it's typically around 6%-8% faster, with the occasional bump to about 10%. Similarly, AMD's competing Radeon RX 6800 delivers the same or slightly better performance in many games, as long as you don't care about the ray tracing, for a little less.
There were some cases, on Watch Dogs: Legion and Shadow of the Tomb Raider benchmarks in 1440p, for example, where my CPU bottlenecked frame rates occasionally in 1440p. It's an 8-core Core i7-10700K (not overclocked), though, which from a price/performance perspective should be an appropriate match for the RTX 3070 series. GPU performance can be extremely configuration dependent (although the synthetic benchmarks bore out the results), and all I can really say is that for my test configuration, it's no slam dunk.
But there are some notable exceptions. On 3DMark's Mesh Shaders test -- a new feature in DirectX 12 Ultimate that more efficiently, and therefore more quickly, handles rendering of complex geometry -- it was more than 1.5 times faster than the RTX 3070 and only a little slower than the RTX 3080 Ti, which means you should see at least some lift in frame rates once it's implemented. As far as I can tell, there aren't any PC games shipping now which support mesh shaders, and Unreal Engine 5, the next version of the popular game development platform and which should help broaden the use of mesh shaders, is still in early access.

The higher-bandwidth memory also gives it a boost on some creative applications, thanks to the higher-bandwidth memory, extra CUDA cores and more.
This is such a weird time to shop for a graphics card, especially midrange ones; chip production delays, combined with GPU-hungry cryptocurrency miners snapping up all available inventory and manufacturers and distributors jacking up prices to take advantage of the demand bubble, has turned buying a GPU into a boss battle of epic proportions.
Despite Nvidia's introduction of cryptomining-optimized cards (its CMP HX) and throttling the mining performance of gaming GPUs (now retronymmed LHR for low hash rate), things still don't look especially promising. The RTX 3080 Ti launched last week and it's already out of stock -- even Nvidia's own cards. Try buying a PS5 instead: you've got a better chance of snagging even that ludicrously hard-to-find console than a current GPU, especially at a reasonable price.

Huawei plans to launch new foldable phone next week
A new clamshell foldable phone from Huawei was shown off in a photoshoot on Chinese social media ahead of its global launch next week.
Known as the Huawei P50 Pocket, the device which looks similar in appearance to Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 3, was teased in a series of photos posted on Harper's Bazaar China's official account on Weibo, China's Twitter-like microblogging platform earlier this week. Huawei is first set to launch the device on Thursday Dec. 23, according to invites sent to media, ahead of its international release to select countries including Singapore.

The Harpers Bazaar images show two circular rings on the front cover of the P50 Pocket: The upper one seems to be a second display and the lower one is the camera bump, housing what appears to be three camera lenses. According to a Twitter post by display analyst Ross Young, that secondary display measure 1 inch across, while the foldable screen measures 6.85 inches diagonally. The Harpers Bazaar images also show a cover with a textured pattern.
The scheduled launch of the P50 Pocket follows the release of Huawei's flagship P50 series, launched in the spring of this year.
