iPad Pro update: Apple's tablet gets an M1 chip, 5G and Liquid Retina XDR display in 2021

Apple has finally announced the upgrade to its iPad Pro that we've all been waiting for, as part of its 2021 Spring Forward on Tuesday. The iPad Pro has been due for a processor refresh, as well as some more advanced camera and screen technology, and now Apple has delivered -- primarily with the addition of its homegrown M1 chip.

Last year, Apple's 2020 iPad Pro refresh saw little that excited us in the way of design improvements and new additions -- a small processor bump and a depth-sensing lidar sensor aside. That means we've had our hopes pinned on 2021 as the year the iPad Pro gets a more significant overhaul.

"iPad is a magical sheet of glass that can become anything you want it to be," said iPad product marketing manager Raja Bose while introducing the upgraded tablet during Apple's event.

The new iPad Pro will be available in two different sizes: 12.9 inches and 11 inches. The devices will come with up to 16GB of memory and up to 2TB of storage. The 12.9-inch model price begins at $1,099 (£999, AU$1,649), with the 11-inch model starting at $799 (£749, AU$1,199). Preorders will open on April 30, and Apple expects devices to start shipping in the second half of May.

Key among the 2021 upgrades is the addition of Apple's M1 chip, first announced last November and "by far the highest performance" processor the company has ever created. The addition of the eight-core chip to the iPad Pro could mean a huge speed boost and better battery performance, with Apple promising a 50% performance improvement over the previous version.

The existing iPad Pro with its A12Z processor offers a zippy experience as is. But more speed is always appreciated, and will hopefully mean the iPad becomes even more of a multitasking monster and can also offer true second monitor support. The M1 chip will also bring a boost in graphics performance, which is over 1,500 times better than the first-generation iPad, according to Apple.

The 2021 iPad Pro is also the first Apple tablet to offer 5G connectivity. With 5G rollouts speeding up around the globe, users who rely on high-speed connectivity on the go will likely appreciate the option to take advantage of the fastest data speeds available.

Another first for iPads (and tablets everywhere) is the introduction of a high-speed Thunderbolt port on the iPad Pro. Until now, Thunderbolt has only been available on Macs and Windows PCs. It uses the same connector as USB-C, but allows for expanded and higher-speed external storage, improved monitor connection and more advanced docks.

As part of the iPad Pro's screen overhaul, Apple is introducing a Liquid Retina XDR display to its top 12.9-inch tablet. With 5.59 million pixels, this technology is the same as the tech that can be seen on Apple's top-end XDR pro display. It offers brilliant brightness peaking at 1,600 nits, along with a wider-than-ever spectrum of color and extreme high contrast.

Perhaps in recognition of the fact that we're all spending a lot of time on Zoom calls these days, Apple has moved its forward-facing camera from a portrait position on the top of the iPad Pro down to the landscape position on the side. The TrueDepth, 12-megapixel, wide-angle camera should still enable you to unlock your device with Face ID no matter what rotation you're using it in. A new "center stage" feature means that if you're on a video call, the iPad will pan to keep you in the center of the camera's field of vision even if you're moving around the room. If other people join you in the room, it will also zoom out to ensure everyone appears on screen.

The new M1-powered iPad Pro will work with Apple's Magic Keyboard, which now comes in a new white color. From next week iOS 14.5 will be available for all iPads, including the new iPad Pro when it's available, which will offer expanded language support for Apple Pencil and support for the latest games controllers.

As was to be expected due to current circumstances, Apple's spring event on Tuesday was fully virtual. Though Apple hasn't been able to lean on its typical stage format due to the pandemic, it has been able to replicate much of the slick presentation through livestreaming videos instead. 

We're also only weeks away now from the second all-virtual WWDC, Apple's annual developer conference, where we're sure to learn about software updates coming to the new iPad Pros, along with other iPad models, later this year. So for all that we got with the new iPad lineup, there's sure to be more to come soon.

In the last few years, game-makers have introduced more complicated gameplay to the mobile experience. Services like Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce Now allow you to play games like Call of Duty, Fortnite and Apex Legends, which can be difficult to tame on your mobile device. Your phone or tablet has a smaller screen than your TV, which means less real estate for visuals and controls, and so a gaming controller might be necessary.

Third-party controllers aren't new to Apple, though. Right now, you can pair both the DualSense from PlayStation and the wireless controller for Xbox to your iPhone or iPad. And controllers from other companies, like the Backbone One and the Razer Kishi, are made specifically for mobile gaming.

However, if you already own a Nintendo Switch, there's no need to purchase a third-party gaming controller. You've got two attached to both sides of your console. And best of all, pairing the Joy-Cons to your iPhone or iPad takes only a few seconds.

For this to work, you'll need to be running iOS 16, which is currently available as a public beta. Here's how you can download it right now.

You can either use one or both Joy-Con controllers.

To start, you'll want to make sure that your Joy-Cons are charged and ready for use. If not, simply attach them to the Nintendo Switch while it's charging in the dock. Once your Joy-Cons are charged and ready to go, slide them off of your console and do the following:

1. First, press and hold down the black pairing button on top of the Joy-Con until the green light starts running back and forth. This means the Joy-Con is now in pairing mode.

2. Next, on your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth.

3. Now, scroll down and find your Joy-Con under OtherDevices. You should see either Joy-Con (L) or Joy-Con (R), depending on which Joy-Con you're currently pairing.

4. Finally, tap the Joy-Con option to pair it. Repeat this process for the other Joy-Con, if needed.

Once your Joy-Cons are paired, you can go into any game that supports third-party controllers, like Minecraft, Among Us and Call of Duty, and play with your newly paired Joy-Cons. Not all mobile games will support both Joy-Con controllers at once, so you might only need to pair one.

To unpair the Joy-Cons, go to Settings > Bluetooth, tap the blue information icon, and then hit Disconnect.

How to adjust to the end of daylight saving time

The end of daylight saving time means earlier sunsets and even earlier sunrises -- morning people, this one's for you. On Sunday, Nov. 7 at 2 a.m. our clocks fell back one hour, giving us one more hour of sleep that day, but considerably less sunshine in the evening. 

For example, when daylight saving time ends in the city of San Francisco, citizens must greet the sunshine peeking through their window around 6:30 a.m., as opposed to the 7:30 a.m. time they're used to during DST. Conversely, nighttime will approach around 5 p.m., whereas the sun sets in San Francisco on Nov. 6 at 6:05 p.m. The time change in your area should look very similar; expect sunrise and sunset to occur an hour earlier. 

There will be even less daylight as we near the Dec. 21 winter solstice, the day of the year that has the least amount of sun and longest night. Daylight saving time will return on March 13, 2022, but until then, you can expect more moonlight during your evening trips to the grocery store after work. Unless, of course, you're in one of the few states that doesn't participate in this clock-changing ritual. 

Here's what you should know, and how to adjust to the time change without losing sleep.

2 states won't be changing their clocks, and more are on the way

If you're questioning why you have to change your clocks twice a year, you're not alone. Hawaii and Arizona don't observe daylight saving time because they both deem it unnecessary. Arizona has such a hot climate that they prefer shorter days, and Hawaii is located in a tropical region where there isn't a significant difference in daylight during summer versus winter. 

Interestingly enough, 47 out of the remaining 48 states have all either passed, introduced, or attempted to pass a bill through legislature that proposed the abolishment of clock-changing. The bills that were signed into law are either waiting for Congress and the US Department of Transportation to make it official, and/or for their neighboring states to join the cause so they don't disrupt regional time zones.

Some argue for permanent daylight saving time, while others, like the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, say we should adopt standard time year-round. Either way, popular opinion is clear: DST is a pain. So why do we do it? 

Why did daylight saving time start?

The idea of daylight saving was first proposed in 1895 in New Zealand, but it wasn't put into practice until World War I, when Germany used it as a way to save energy by using less electricity on lighting. The United States followed suit in signing DST into law in 1918 to preserve daylight and save energy, but it was quickly appealed in 1919 after the war due to its unpopularity among citizens.

Since then, the United States has had a long, confusing back-and-forth relationship with DST. For the most part states and cities have been left to decide for themselves whether they want to observe the time change or not. As you could imagine, this made it difficult for public transportation services and broadcasting networks on TV and radio to properly coordinate times. 

In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson put an end to the confusion and signed the Uniform Time Act, which created set dates when the nation would collectively start and end DST. Any state that didn't want to participate was allowed to pass a law through their own legislatures, hence Alaska and Hawaii.

Tips for adjusting to daylight saving time

Light and darkness play a huge role in dictating our circadian rhythms, the internal bodily process that signals when it's time to wake up and time to hit the hay. When the time comes to set the clock back, it might take your body five to seven days to properly adjust to the change due to changes in your sleeping patterns and productivity. You may feel yourself getting hungry earlier than you typically do, and drowsier earlier in the evening. Here are a few tips you can use to adjust to the new time change.

  • Prepare for the Sunday time change: Don't use getting an extra hour of sleep as an excuse to stay up later. Go to bed at the same time you typically do on Saturday to maintain your regular sleep-wake cycle. 
  • Keep a routine sleep-wake schedule: After the time change, try going to bed and waking up at the same time each day to help reset your body's circadian rhythm. Once you get into a consistent pattern, your body will align with your schedule and naturally recognize when it's time to wake up or go to sleep. 
  • Try a sleep mask: If you like to wake up in the morning on your own time and not the sun's time, aka 6:30 a.m., try using a sleep mask. There are options that fit comfortably snug around your face, preventing light from seeping in and waking you up.

Google announces Smart Actions to help automatically edit your photos

Colorizing old black-and-white photos is just one of the new AI-powered features for Google Photos.

At Google I/O on Tuesday, the company announced new AI features for Google Photos, its platform for storing and sending images. At Google's annual developers conference, company CEO Sundar Pichai talked about all the different ways artificial intelligence can help with its products. 

Pichai introduced Smart Actions, with new features designed to make scanning documents and sending pictures to your friends much more efficient. 

The AI is able to spot if a photo is too dark, or if colors can be more vibrant in the image, Pichai said. These changes aren't automatic; the AI system offers the potential changes as suggestions instead. 

"If you have this cute picture of your kid, we can make it better. We can pop the color and make the kid even cuter," Pichai said. 

One of the features that got the loudest cheers was converting documents into PDF files automatically. If you're taking any photos of documents on Google Photos, it'll be able to convert them with the AI. 

"These suggested actions are powered by machine learning, which means you only see them on relevant photos. You can easily tap the suggestions to complete the action," Nan Wang, a Google Photos software engineer, said in a blog post.

The feature is also able to recolor photos that were originally uploaded in black and white. The AI can pick up on friends in the image with facial recognition too, and offer to send the pictures to them, to make sharing easier.

Pichai said the Google Photos features would be available in the next couple of months.

AMD turned 50 this year, and it's celebrating the old-fashioned way: By drastically improving its processor architecture.

At Computex 2019, the chipmaker announced a slew of new processor units, both central and graphics, running its new 7nm architecture. On the CPU side is the Zen 2 range, while the GPUs fall under the new Navi umbrella.

The "one last thing" moment of the press conference, which kicks off days of Taiwan's annual computer extravaganza, was the Ryzen 7 3900X CPU. A competitor for Intel's top-of-the-line Core i9 9920X CPU, the "no compromise" Ryzen 7 3900X features 12 cores and has a boost clock speed of 4.6GHz. It runs on 105 watts, versus the 9920X's less efficient 165 watts, and more importantly will retail for $499 upon its July 7 release. The 9920X, for comparison, costs $1,199.

International pricing or availability wasn't mentioned during the press conference.

AMD, battling to take marketshare from both Intel and Nvidia, showed many competitor comparison videos throughout the conference. When it came to the 3900X versus the i9 9920X, the Blender benchmarking tool had AMD at an 18 percent performance lead. 

You should always take such benchmark results with a grain of salt, since companies obviously pick and choose tests that lean into their product's strengths, but that performance at $499 is certainly impressive. 

AMD also announced two other processors for desktop computers. First, the $329 Ryzen 7 3700X, which it touts as the first 7nm desktop CPU. The octa-core processor has 3.6GHz of power (4.4GHz boost), and runs on 65 watts (last year's 2700X ran on 105 watts). AMD compared it to Intel's $379 Core i7-9700K processor, with an onstage Cinebench test claiming the 3700X to be a third faster. 

Second, the $399 Ryzen 7 3800X for desktop gamers. It's also an octa-core CPU, runs on 3.8GHz (4.5GHz boost) and 105 watts. AMD says it's comparable to Intel's $479 Core i9-9900K. 

Speaking of gamers, Radeon, AMD's line of graphics cards, also got some love at the Computex kickoff. Su noted that Sony's PlayStation 5 would be powered by a custom setup of a Navi GPU and Zen 2 CPUs before announcing the RX5000 line of graphics cards.

The line is named in honor of AMD's 50th anniversary, said AMD CEO Lisa Su. We then got our first competitor comparison of the night, with an RX 5000-series GPU side-by-side with a Nvidia RTX 2070, both running co-op game Strange Brigade. AMD's component, Radeon general manager Scott Herkelman said, ran around 10 percent better than the 2070. 

Navi will launch in July, like the new Ryzen CPUs, but we don't know pricing yet. That will be announced at E3 in June, AMD said.

Hubble Spies Celestial Cloudscape That's Pretty as a Painting

I'm wowed by the early results from the James Webb Space Telescope, but my Hubble Space Telescope fandom hasn't waned one bit. Case in point: Hubble delivered a view of the area around Herbig-Haro object HH 505 in the Orion Nebula. It's an image awash in color and curves, like an intense, abstract watercolor painting. The European Space Agency described it as a "celestial cloudscape."

Here's the full image. Hubble peered at the Orion Nebula and saw this gorgeous wash of gas and dust around Herbig-Haro object HH 505.

ESA said in a statement Friday, "Herbig-Haro objects are luminous regions surrounding newborn stars, and are formed when stellar winds or jets of gas spewing from these newborn stars form shockwaves colliding with nearby gas and dust at high speeds."  

HH 505 gets its look thanks to a star called IX Ori that hangs out at the far reaches of the Orion Nebula about 1,000 light-years from us. The star's outflows appear as curving structures at the top and bottom of the full image. 

Hubble's views of the Orion Nebula -- an active stellar nursery -- highlight the work of young stars and how they impact their space neighborhoods. The telescope is a joint project of NASA and the European Space Agency.

If you like this picture of HH 505, then be sure to check out NASA's visualization video from 2018 that flies you into the nebula using a combination of Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescope observations. 

Though Webb is the shiny new thing, it's not meant as a replacement for Hubble, which has remarkably been in service for over 30 years. The two telescopes have different specialties and will both contribute to a growing understanding of the universe.
