Facebook, YouTube to Restrict Some Russian State-Controlled Media Across Europe

Facebook, YouTube and other social networks are restricting access to Russian state-controlled media outlets RT and Sputnik across Europe, amid calls to crack down on disinformation. The move will likely heighten tensions between some of the world's most popular social networks and the Russian government.

Facebook's parent company, Meta, said Monday that it will limit the accessibility of Sputnik and RT across the European Union.

"We have received requests from a number of governments and the EU to take further steps in relation to Russian state-controlled media. Given the exceptional nature of the current situation, we will be restricting access to RT and Sputnik across the EU at this time," Nick Clegg, who oversees global affairs at Meta and is a former UK deputy prime minister, said in a tweet.

Clegg didn't respond to questions on Twitter about what the restrictions entail, how many requests Meta has received and from which governments or how many Facebook users will be impacted by these restrictions. Clegg also didn't say when these restrictions would start. RT's Facebook page has 7.4 million followers and Sputnik's Facebook page has 1.4 million followers. The media outlets are also on Facebook-owned Instagram, a photo and video service. RT has 839,000 followers on Instagram and Sputnik has 116,000 followers.

On Tuesday, Google said in a post on Twitter that it would block YouTube channels connected to RT and Sputnik across Europe.

"Due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, we're blocking YouTube channels connected to RT and Sputnik across Europe, effective immediately," reads a tweet from the official Google Europe account. "It'll take time for our systems to fully ramp up. Our teams continue to monitor the situation around the clock to take swift action."

Google, the video giant's parent company, didn't immediately respond to questions on how many YouTube channels would be blocked. RT's main channel on YouTube has more than 4.6 million subscribers, while Sputnik has over 300,000 subscribers.

Facebook's move came a day after Meta announced it had restricted access to several accounts, including from Russian state-controlled media, in Ukraine after a request from the government there. Meta has been facing more pressure to take action against these media outlets for spreading propaganda and false claims after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

On Sunday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a tweet that the EU's executive branch is developing tools to ban "toxic and harmful disinformation" published by RT and Sputnik and their subsidiaries. The EU is an economic and political union of 27 countries, including France, Germany and Spain.

Following Facebook's move on Tuesday, RT took issue with unspecified comments from European government officials and actions by social media platforms, with its deputy editor-in-chief saying in a statement that no one had pointed to specific evidence of falsehoods appearing on its site during the Ukraine crisis. In its own statement, Sputnik's press arm characterized the restrictions as an "information war against the Russian media."

RT and Sputnik are on other social media sites, including Twitter and TikTok. A spokeswoman for TikTok said users in the EU won't see content from RT's and Sputnik's accounts. Twitter started labeling state-affiliated media, but a spokeswoman said the company had "nothing to share at this time" when asked if the company was also planning to restrict RT and Sputnik.

The rare move by Meta also raises questions about whether Russia will further restrict access to Facebook and Instagram. Ukrainians have put pressure on Facebook to remove access to the main social network and Instagram in Russia, but Clegg said Sunday those platforms are also being used by protesters and as a source of independent information. "The Russian Government is already throttling our platform to prevent these activities. We believe turning off our services would silence important expression at a crucial time," Clegg said in a tweet on Sunday.

Russia said last week that it's partly restricting access to Facebook after the social network refused to stop fact-checking and labeling content posted on Facebook by four Russian state-owned media organizations. Russia's telecommunications regulator, Roskomnadzor, alleges Facebook violated "fundamental human rights" by restricting the country's state-controlled media.

Facebook and YouTube have also been barring ads from Russia state media. Twitter also said last week that it's temporarily pausing ads in Ukraine and Russia.

On Sunday, Meta also announced that it removed a network of about 40 fake accounts, Pages and Groups on Facebook and Instagram from Russia and Ukraine. Meta said some of these accounts pretended to be news editors and ran fake news websites and published stories that included "claims about the West betraying Ukraine and Ukraine being a failed state." Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp, created a special operations center with experts who speak Ukrainian and Russian to help monitor its platform.

Oppo Reno 4 Pro hands-on: Flagship features on a midrange phone

Midrange phones have developed a reputation for being boring over the past few years. They often come with overused features and unmemorable names. But Chinese phone-maker Oppo's new Reno 4 Pro is chipping away at that narrative. The Reno 4 Pro, which launched in India in July, is technically a midrange phone, but it's packed with features typically found in more fancy flagships. It has a curved 90Hz display, ultrafast charging and a set of stereo speakers. But because it is a midrange phone after all, it does make some sacrifices. The biggest thing missing is 5G capability which, if you're planning on keeping the Reno 4 Pro for a few years, you'll want your next phone to have. Oppo says that's because it wants the phone to "better fit" the countries it'll be released in.

The Chinese version of the Reno 4 Pro, which does have 5G capabilities, starts for 3,799 yuan or approximately $540 ( £410 or AU$750). In India, it starts at 34,990 rupees, which converts to roughly $470. Pricing for markets outside Asia haven't been released yet, but expect costs to trend higher in Western countries. After India, the Reno 4 Pro is slated for launch in other parts of Asia as well as select European countries, but will not hit shelves in the US. For the full list of specs, scroll down to see our chart at the bottom.

A 4,000-mAh battery with ultrafast charging

Oppo has a fixation with ultrafast battery charging, a fixation that's driven it to develop some of the fastest charging technology in the business. (Its 125-watt charger can apparently juice up phones within 20 minutes.) And it's increasingly taking this tech, which was typically reserved for higher-end or flagship handsets, to its midrange phones.

The device comes with 65-watt fast charging, known as "SuperVOOC 2.0," which promises to revitalize its dead 4,000-mAh battery in 36 minutes. For comparison, a standard Apple iPhone charger is 5 watts. I tested it twice and both times it filled up to 99% within that time frame. That isn't 100%, but it's close enough and it's a welcome feature on any phone, especially a midtier one. You can also find this charging tech on the Oppo's super premium flagship, the Find X2 Pro, but that'll set you back more than $1,300.

In addition to the speedy charging, Oppo says its power-saving modes are more efficient. When you turn on "Super Power Saving Mode," you'll be able to chat on WhatsApp for 90 minutes or make calls for 77 minutes with just 5% of battery, according to Oppo. Meanwhile, the company says that its Super Night Time Standby uses up only 2% over eight hours overnight. I'll have to test this out myself to determine whether these claims check out.

Oppo

The Reno 4 Pro has a 90Hz curved display

The 6.5-inch Reno 4 Pro has a gently curved AMOLED display outfitted into an impressively compact and slim phone. It's one of the lightest and slimmest phones I've used in a while, weighing just 161 grams and measuring only 7.7mm thick despite the presence of a large battery under its hood. For comparison, Samsung's pocketable Galaxy S20 is 164 grams and 7.9mm.

Speaking of the display, it features speedy refresh rates of up to 90Hz. Most phones have a 60Hz display, which means the screen refreshes 60 times a second. A faster screen like the one on the Reno 4 Pro makes animations look smoother, text and images more crisp and offers a generally smooth and immersive experience.

The Reno 4 Pro has a total of 5 cameras

The Reno 4 Pro made it easy to take crisp and vibrant photos. Low light imaging was impressive too. But I'm looking forward to trying the Reno 4 Pro camera system in more depth, including its "Smart Slow Motion feature which can capture 1080p video at a super slow 480fps.

The Reno 4 Pro has four cameras on its rear. The main camera has a 48-megapixel lens, which uses Sony's IMX 586 sensor. It's accompanied by an 8-megapixel ultrawide camera, a two-megapixel macro camera and mono camera. On the phone's front, you'll find a selfie camera that can take 32-megapixel photos, which is a step down on paper from the Reno 3 Pro that set itself apart with its 40-megapixel selfie photos.

2023 Honda Civic Type R Will Debut on July 20

2023 Honda Civic Type R Will Debut on July 20

There are hot hatches, and then there's the Honda Civic Type R. This turbocharged wonder earns holy-grail status among compact performance cars because it's so freakin' good to drive while also being practical, comfortable and even relatively affordable. That's why we're super excited about the debut of the brand-new Type R, a car that's been teased for months. But it looks like we won't have to salivate much longer, as Honda on Monday confirmed it'll show the new Civic Type R on Wednesday, July 20.

What do we know about the new Type R? Next to nothing. It'll be based on the new Civic hatchback, which means it'll have a far more mature design than its overstyled predecessor, though the requisite giant wing will obviously remain. We've seen the new Civic Type R testing at the Suzuka Circuit in Japan (where it set a new lap record) and Germany's infamous Nürburgring, and it looks fast as heck -- as it should be.

Honda previously said the new Type R will be the company's "best performing" Civic, though that kind of goes without saying. We've heard rumors that the new Type R will use a tweaked version of the current car's 2.0-liter, turbo I4 engine, meaning we can expect at least 306 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission with rev-matching will almost certainly be offered, and front-wheel drive should remain, as well.

For the full scoop, check back on July 20. Honda will reveal the Civic Type R online at 7 p.m. PT (10 p.m. ET).

WWE releases Braun Strowman, Aleister Black, Lana and more

WWE on Wednesday announced a new round of talent cuts -- and they're even more surprising than the round of releases from April. Braun Strowman, former Universal Champion and an established top star, was one of several talents released Tuesday.

"WWE has come to terms on the releases of Braun Strowman, Aleister Black, Lana, Murphy, Ruby Riott and Santana Garrett," the company said in a statement on its website, belying the momentous news.

Strowman is the biggest shock, having been positioned as a top-tier star for much of the past five years. Last year he defeated Goldberg at WrestleMania to win the Universal Championship, and at this year's show he starred in a heavily promoted cage match against Shane McMahon

Aleister Black is a highly reguarded performer and a former NXT Champion who enjoyed a consistent run on the main roster last year, making his release another surprise. Black hadn't been seen on TV for six months, but in late May re-emerged with a new character.

It follows a similar round of talent releases that came in April -- WWE traditionally cuts performers after WrestleMania -- which included Billie Kay, Peyton Royce, Mickie James and, hugely surprising at the time, Samoa Joe. In May WWE reportedly trimmed its corporate side too, terminating contracts with staff in film, TV, social media and international teams.

The round of releases on Wednesday led to increased speculation that Vince McMahon, founder and CEO of WWE, is cutting costs ahead of a potential sale. Rumors of such a sale have swirled around since January, when WWE announced that its WWE Network streaming service would be migrating to NBC's Peacock

"You don't cut talent assets on this level unless you are trying to maximize profits before a sale," wrote Dave Schilling, a former writer at WWE, in a tweet. Sean Ross Sapp, a wrestling journalist from Fightful, tweeted: "The only way I can rationalize the kind of cuts is for an eventual sale. Several of these people signed big contracts before the pandemic when WWE were in talent hoarding, lock em up for years mode."

WWE didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

This Bella air fryer and Shark cordless vacuum are both 50% off today at Best Buy

I bought my dad an air fryer this past holiday and quickly -- via his unbridled enthusiasm for it -- learned that you really can use this thing for every meal. Like quick, no-mess air fryer frittatas for breakfast, for instance, with crunchy breakfast potatoes that use far less oil. It also makes juicy lunch-salad proteins like chicken breast and shrimp in about half the time of a standard oven, and for dinner, he spoils himself with healthy(er) chicken wings or "fried" chicken, and easy sides such as sweet potato wedges and crispy Brussel sprouts.

Read more: 15 unexpected air fryer recipes you have to try

As it happens, Best Buy has a highly rated Bella Pro Series 3.7-Quart Digital air fryer on sale for just $60 today, more than half off its usual price. The Bella air fryer can cook up to three pounds of food (enough for a group) and do it fast with a 1,500-watt super convection heating system. And simple digital controls and timer settings make for a real "set it and forget it" situation.

Should you spring for the air fryer, you're likely going to be hosting get-togethers more often, which may also mean more mess to clean. For every problem, a solution: Best Buy also has the powerful Shark ION powered-lift cordless vacuum on sale for $225 (50% off). It too gets high marks in user reviews and is often compared to a Dyson in terms of performance, just at a lower price.

Both the Bella air fryer and Shark vacuum will ship for free by Friday if you order today. Or you can buy it online and pick it up at a local Best Buy in just a few hours, pending inventory.

Rattlesnake takes slo-mo bite out of a GoPro camera

Rattlesnake takes slo-mo bite out of a GoPro camera

Don't mess with a pit full of rattlesnakes. Video screenshot by Amanda Kooser/CNET

Sean Penn and a pit full of reptiles have something in common. Rattlesnakes don't like paparazzi, either.

YouTube user Michael Delaney posted a video Sunday with the simple but intriguing title "Rattlesnakes strike GoPro." With a teaser like that, there's no way you can resist taking a look.

If snakes give you a serious case of the heebie-jeebies, you might not want to watch the video. It involves not just a single snake, which is serious enough, but a whole writhing pile of rattlers, busy warning the camera not to come closer by shaking their tails. This is the soundtrack of your nightmares.

The dramatic slo-mo footage shows a series of three bites, the last of which knocks the camera into the pile of snakes. Perhaps what's most impressive is that even in slow-motion the snake bites come so fast as to be a blur.

Delaney is no stranger to combining technology and animal life. His previous videos include the use of a DJI Phantom 3 drone to check on a herd of cattle (the cows are much more chill about the camera's presence than the snakes). Delaney offers cow and agriculture-monitoring camera kits for ranchers through his CowCams business.

You might wonder how Delaney retrieved his wayward GoPro to share the video. He reported on his CowCams Facebook page that he "used a hockey stick to fish it out."

This is a great time to note that you probably shouldn't be trying this sort of snake-GoPro experiment yourself. Here's hoping Delaney had the world's longest selfie stick in use while he was capturing the footage.
