The Gadget Show Live is the UK's largest consumer technology showcase, where all manner of tech brands get together to show off their latest bits of kit. Held in Birmingham, the sparkling jewel of the Midlands, the show plays host to well-know brands like Sony and Samsung, along with a wealth of up and coming names. I hopped on a train to see what was on show.

Along with a slew of phone and tablet accessories, the show features new products from all categories. Music fans are well catered for, with headphones and speakers from Bowers and Wilkins, Pioneer, Libratone and audio streaming speakers from Musaic. Roland were there showing off their latest digital drum kit, the TD30K, which has hundreds of drum sounds on board recorded from actual drum kits to give a more realistic sound reproduction.

DJI's new Phantom 2 Vision+ led the charge in camera-equipped drones. Unveiled only last week, this quadrocopter has a built-in camera with stabiliser for smooth video from the air. It's incredibly easy to fly too, but it will set you back around £900. Parrot's AR Drone 2 comes in at around £350 and can be controlled from your iPhone.

Eco travel was a big theme from the show this year, with electric scooters, electric cars and a solar powered concept car from Cambridge University making appearances. Only 200 of Volkswagen's futuristic-looking XL1 cars will be made -- and will sell for £111,000 -- but their hybrid engines can achieve an astonishing 313 miles to the gallon. Can you afford not to get one? Yes, probably.

So is the Gadget Show Live worth attending? If you're a keen gadget nerd, then absolutely. Apart from getting up close and personal with the latest kit such as the Sony Xperia Z2 -- which is yet to even hit the shops -- you'll see a whole array of top-end gaming chairs, remote control cars, actual cars, headphones and loads of stuff that you wouldn't find in your typical branch of Currys.

Intel Has More Women in Tech Than Ever, But the Percentage Still Dropped

New diversity and inclusion figures from Intel, out Thursday, show the company's going to need to make some tweaks to keep the percentages of groups typically underrepresented in the industry climbing. 

The percentage of women in technical roles slid from 25.2% to 24.3% between 2020 and 2021. It's not the direction the company is hoping for given the goal it set in 2020 to get women into 40% of technical roles by 2030. Tech giants like Google (25.7%), Facebook (24.8%), Apple (24.4%) and others have long struggled to hit 30% women in tech roles. 

But according to Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer Dawn Jones, the slide is prompting Intel to examine what's behind the decline. For the first time since Intel started releasing numbers in 2015, the company included the raw numbers of women in its workforce. There are 26,000 women in tech roles at Intel, the most in the company's history. After a period of heavy hiring last year, though, the percentage took a hit, she said. 

"We have to look at that hiring pool more intentionally," Jones said. "Is it that we are not getting the resumes? Is it that we're not getting the interest? And if we're not getting the interest, why? These are questions that we ask. Is [it] the culture? Is it a flexibility issue? Is it a location issue?" 

The company is also setting the goal of making sure hiring for women in tech roles sits at 30% at least in 2022, and tying it to annual performance bonuses, a move Intel has used in the past to try to spur diversity.

Intel's diversity and inclusion numbers are part of its larger annual Corporate Responsibility Report, which covers additional topics like the company's sustainability and education efforts. For example, Intel is committing to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. It's also putting $100 million in the next decade toward research and education partnerships relating to semiconductor manufacturing.

Many big name tech companies like Google and Facebook started publishing diversity figures around 2014 as the industry began to face scrutiny over its demographic makeup. The reports confirmed what was already obvious -- tech is largely white and male. 

Since 2015, Intel's been something of a rarity in terms of publicly committing to goals around diversity and inclusion. In 2018, it reached its goal of hitting full representation of women and minorities in its US workforce (compared to broader US tech industry) two years ahead of schedule. In 2019, the company said it closed its pay gap. 

In 2020, Intel set new goals, including putting women in 40% of technical roles by 2030 and doubling the numbers of women and underrepresented minorities in senior roles in the same time frame. 

Overall, the number of women at Intel decreased from 26.3% in 2020 to 25.8%. Intel is 44.1% white, down from 45.8% the previous year. Several underrepresented minority groups saw losses – Hispanic employees fell from 10.5% to 9.3%; Black employees dropped from 5% to 4.9%; Asian employees also declined from 37.6% to 36.3%. The percentage of Pacific Islanders stayed flat at .4% and Native American employees gained some ground at .9%, up from .8%. 

Jones did point out the addition of two new population categories, giving folks the ability to identify as "other" or "two or more ethnicities," which may have contributed to differences in the racial and ethnic breakdowns. 

Intel also hit a new high in terms of the number of women in leadership roles, having 1,449 total, but again the percentage still fell slightly from 18.8% to 18.7%

In terms of pay, women in the US earned as much or slightly more than their male counterparts at Intel. 

Jones also talked about how Intel is trying to respond to the broader moment -- the combination of the coronavirus pandemic, which reports say has throttled women's careers and the Great Resignation. In March, 4.5 million people quit their jobs. 

As people are leaving their jobs in search of better opportunities, Jones said Intel is paying attention to why. Intel is hoping, for one, that the embrace of hybrid workplaces will help bring more women and underrepresented minorities into the fold. Initiatives like its Returnship Program, which aims to get women who have left the workforce for a while back, could potentially also help. 

"Money is a factor, but generally, it's not the only factor or even the driving factor," Jones said. "It's 'I don't feel valued and I'm not getting money. So, let me go find a place that is giving me all of these things.'"

Displays that wrap around the edges of modern high-end Android phones have been increasing in popularity since the first Samsung Galaxy Note Edge in 2014. As companies now look to extend the bendable display idea to foldable phones, Chinese smartphone maker Oppo is continuing to stretch out the edges of wraparound screens on more traditional devices. 

In a new prototype shared on the company's Facebook and Twitter pages, Oppo on Monday showed off a "waterfall screen" that appears to even further extend the display around the sides of the phone. There are still slight bezels along the top, bottom and sides of the device, but the screen does seem to push the technology further than prior phones. 

When looking at the phone on a slight angle with a nonwhite background the side bezels almost disappear. 

As one would expect with a prototype, Oppo did not share pricing, release date or even an indication on when the display might go into production. A brand that is not widely sold in the US, Oppo has in the past shared some manufacturing and components with its subsidiary OnePlus, which does sell phones in the US. It is, however, unclear if Oppo will be sharing the new display tech with its subbrand. 

Oppo did not immediately respond to a request for comment. OnePlus declined to comment.

With Apple and Samsung wading into the crowded field of personalized emojis, Snapchat wants to expand too.

Friendmoji -- which are your Snapchat-customized Bitmoji featuring you and a friend -- will be available outside Snapchat on iPhones and iPads in the coming days, Snap said on Friday.

The cartoon versions of you and your friend will be available on the Bitmoji keyboard for Apple's iOS mobile software, allowing you to share your Bitmoji love through messages.

To share Friendmoji, your Snapchat account needs to be linked with your Bitmoji app. You can tap on the friend icon in the upper-right corner of the keyboard to select or search from your list of friends.

This comes as smartphone heavyweights Apple and Samsung make their own forays into the emoji battleground. On Monday, Apple introduced its Memoji, a cartoon version of you that's evolved from the previous Animoji lineup of animated poop and robots. Then there's Samsung's AR Emoji, which was introduced alongside the Galaxy S9 in February.

Surprise! Netflix Adds a Bonus 'Sandman' Episode

If you couldn't get enough of Netflix's mesmeric fantasy series The Sandman, then here's some good news: Netflix just added a star-studded bonus episode with two new standalone stories.

The 10-episode series began streaming on Aug. 3, but you can now find an 11th episode following season 1's finale that adapts a pair of stories from the original comics. The first half of the episode is a short animated tale entitled A Dream Of A Thousand Cats, while the second full length story is a live action tale entitled Calliope.

The cartoon cat caper is voiced by Sanda Oh, James McAvoy, David Tennant, Georgia Tennant, Michael Sheen, Nonso Anozie, Joe Lycett, Diane Morgan and even comics writer Neil Gaiman himself. The second story stars Melissanthi Mahut as ancient muse Calliope, alongside Doctor Who stars Arthur Darvill, Nina Wadia and Derek Jacobi. In both stories, Tom Sturridge plays Morpheus, AKA Dream, the Sandman himself.

Although the new episode is tacked on the end of the series, the Calliope episode begins in 2018 and continues to 2022, so unfolds during the course of the series between Dream's escape from captivity and his withdrawal into the Dreaming at the close of season 1.
