Olympic medalist reveals how she fixed her kayak... with a condom

Condoms have more than one use, it turns out. Australian Olympian Jessica Fox, who won a gold medal in canoe slalom on Thursday and a bronze in kayak slalom earlier in the week, demonstrated that in an Instagram video shared by The Highlights Club AU. Fox is seen repairing a hole in her kayak with what's captioned as a "carbon mixture," then stretching a condom and carefully sliding it on to protect the repair.

"Bet you never knew condoms could be used for kayak repairs," the caption on the video reads. "Very stretchy, much strong."

Fox didn't immediately respond to a request for comment (she's a little busy). But while games organizers have given out condoms to Olympic athletes since 1988 (the tradition began in Seoul in 1988 due to HIV and AIDS), things are a bit different this year. Due to the coronavirus, Olympic organizers haven't wanted to encourage Olympic hookups, so they reportedly aren't handing out free condoms until the athletes are ready to leave Japan.

Fox's ingenuity shouldn't surprise anyone. She now has four Olympic medals, and Team Australia proudly, and accurately, dubbed her "the most successful female paddler in Olympic canoe slalom history."

"I'm grateful to everyone who helped me get to this point," Fox said in the Instagram post. "I'm sending all my love and all my gratitude because I felt the support from all over the world."

What happens if you missed tax deadline what happens when you miss tax deadline missed tax filing deadline missed quarterly tax deadline missed tax deadline i missed the tax deadline 2021 missed tax deadline you missed the meeting you missed the joke you missed a spot you missed me meme you missed the starting gun
You Missed the Tax Deadline. Now What Should You Do?

You Missed the Tax Deadline. Now What Should You Do?

This story is part of Taxes 2022, CNET's coverage of the best tax software and everything else you need to get your return filed quickly, accurately and on-time.

Yesterday was the federal tax deadline for almost everyone in the US. (Massachusetts and Maine, you've still got today to finish.) If you didn't electronically file your tax return or have a paper return postmarked by midnight April 18, your taxes are now technically late.

There are plenty of reasons why people might not be able to finish and file their tax returns by the deadline -- missing tax info, medical emergencies, family troubles, unexpected travel… you know, life.

Yes, you should have filed a tax extension. But what to do now that your tax return is late? Whether you owe taxes or are expecting a tax refund, the answer is simple -- complete and file your 2021 tax return as soon as possible.

However, if you owe money, your situation becomes more urgent. The longer you wait to file your tax return and show the IRS you intend to pay what you owe, the more penalties and interest may pile up.

Read on to learn more about how to handle a late tax payment, including information on penalties, interest and payment plans. For more, find the best software for filing your tax return and learn how to track your refund to your bank account or mailbox after you do.

What if I'm late and I am expecting a tax refund for 2021?

If you're expecting money back from the IRS from your 2021 tax return, there are no penalties for filing late. In fact, you have three years to file your 2021 tax return before the IRS turns your tax refund over to the Treasury and your money is gone forever.

Your tax refund might be slightly delayed by filing late, but you should still expect to receive your money in four to six weeks.

You could be making good use of the money the IRS owes you, and the longer you wait to file your taxes, the more you lose out. Whether you use your tax refund to pay down a credit card debt, start an emergency fund, make investments or even just treat yourself to a nice dinner or vacation (depending on your refund amount), you want your money as soon as possible. Letting the IRS keep your tax refund longer only deprives you of possible interest and spending power.

What if I missed the deadline and I owe money on my taxes?

If you missed the tax deadline, didn't file an extension and you owe taxes, you need to hurry up and finish your return as soon as possible and send it in. Not filing taxes when you owe money to the IRS can incur both late filing penalties and late payment penalties.

What are the fees and penalties for filing taxes late?

There are two basic penalties that the IRS charges for filing taxes late when you owe money: a failure-to-file penalty and a failure-to-pay penalty. On top of that, you'll also pay interest on the amount you owe.

The failure-to-file penalty hurts the most. It's generally 5% of the amount you owe for each month or part of a month that your return is late, with a maximum penalty of 25%. If your return is more than 60 days late, the minimum penalty is $435 or the balance of your taxes due, if less than that.

The failure-to-pay penalty will also cost you money, but not nearly as much -- a big reason to file an extension on time even if you can't pay anything. This penalty is usually calculated at 0.5% of any taxes owed that aren't paid by the deadline. The IRS again charges the penalty for each month or part of a month that your payment is late, with a maximum 25% penalty total.

The IRS also charges interest on late taxes. Determined by adding 3% to the short-term federal interest rate, the IRS interest rate is currently 4%. That rate is adjusted quarterly, and interest is compounded daily.

Can I file an extension past the tax deadline?

Unfortunately, no. Tax extensions provide taxpayers six additional months to complete their tax returns, but they must be filed by the tax deadline. Taxpayers filing extensions must also include the estimated amount of money that they owe using IRS Form 1040-ES. Online tax software can also quickly calculate your estimated taxes.

If your deadline has passed, it's too late to file an extension.

What if I filed an extension on time?

Well done. You've got until Oct. 15, 2022, to file your tax return if you filed a tax extension by the April 18 deadline. As long as you paid an estimated amount that's close to what you owe, you won't be subject to fines or penalties if you file your return and pay any remaining tax liability by Oct. 15.

If you didn't pay enough money with your tax extension, you may be subject to the late payment penalty. The IRS expects your estimated payment to be at least 90% of your total tax liability. The agency may charge a 0.5% per month penalty on the amount of unpaid taxes if you paid less than that, so you should still complete your tax return and file it as soon as possible.

What if I can't afford to pay the taxes I owe?

Owing taxes that you don't have the money to pay can be incredibly stressful. However, you can take action now that will lighten both your financial and psychological burdens.

Consider an IRS payment plan. If you can pay off your tax debt within 180 days, the IRS will let you apply for a short-term payment plan that costs nothing, although you'll still accrue penalties and interest until your debt is paid off. It's easy to apply online or at a local IRS office.

If you need more than 180 days, you can apply for a long-term payment plan that costs $31 for automatic monthly bank payments via direct debit, or $130 for non-direct debit payments. Low-income taxpayers -- those with adjusted gross incomes at or below 250% of the federal poverty guidelines -- can waive the fee for the direct-debit installment plan or pay $43 for the non-direct debit plan.

You might consider other borrowing options outside of the IRS. If your tax liability isn't too high, you could use a credit card with a 0% intro APR to pay your taxes, assuming you can pay off that debt before the intro period expires. For larger tax debts, you could consider a debt-consolidation loan, though your rate will generally be higher than the 4% currently charged by the IRS.

GoPro reveals what the GPS in the Hero5 Black camera is for

GoPro just unlocked the hidden potential of the Hero5 camera's GPS data.

As of today, you can download its Quik for Desktop software for playing, editing and sharing your videos, and it will transform that data into telemetry gauges you can overlay onto your clips.

It's simple to use, too: Just record your video with the GPS turned on and connected to satellites and the camera starts collecting information for GPS path, speed, altitude, g-force and elevation gain. Import your clips into Quik and you'll see a little gauge icon when you playback a video.

screen-shot-2016-11-16-at-9-54-30-am.png

Quik lets you select what data you want to overlay.

Joshua Goldman/CNET

From there you can select just what info you want to display on top of your clips. There's an Info Cluster that gives you date and time, distance in kilometers or miles, altitude and elevation gain; a speedometer and speed graph (the latter comes in handy for tagging high-speed highlights); GPS path; and g-force. All of them can be resized and placed anywhere on your clip.

GoPro's site has all the details, but I did a quick test of it and, like I said earlier, it's simple to use. Having the GPS on will cut into the battery life some, which should be expected but is still something to keep in mind. Also, after you turn on the GPS, you'll want to make sure you're locked onto some satellites before you start recording. That seems like a given, but I still managed to record several clips thinking it would lock quickly after I started moving and missed out on data because of it.

You can check out the clip below to get an idea of what it will do, but it's definitely a nice addition and makes paying extra for the Hero5 Black more worthwhile for sure.

We tried world's first in-screen fingerprint reader at CES

Using the world's first phone with a fingerprint scanner built into the display was as awesome as I hoped it would be.

There's no home button breaking up your screen space, and no fumbling for a reader on the phone's back. I simply pressed my index finger on the phone screen in the place where the home button would be. The screen registered my digit, then spun up a spiderweb of blue light in a pattern that instantly brings computer circuits to mind. I was in.

Such a simple, elegant harbinger of things to come: a home button that appears only when you need it and then gets out of the way. I would bet several Bitcoins that in-display fingerprint sensors become one of 2018's biggest phone trends, starting with high-end devices like the rumored Samsung Galaxy S9.

But the phone I held in my hands was not the Galaxy S9, which doesn't exist yet. It's a pre-production model by Chinese phonemaker Vivo, and it's still without an official name, price and sale date.

For phone enthusiasts, the real news is that this technology -- which was rumored for the Galaxy S8 and beyond, and also for the iPhone X -- isn't just a bunch of hot air. It's real, and it works.

In fact, the fingerprint sensor -- made by sensor company Synaptics -- lives beneath the 6-inch OLED display. That's the "screen" you're actually looking at beneath the cover glass. You can see it in our photos here.

vivo2

This is the sensor that makes it all possible.

John Kim/CNET

When your fingertip hits the target, the sensor array turns on the display to light your finger, and only your finger. The image of your print makes its way to an optical image sensor beneath the display.

It's then run through an AI processor that's trained to recognize 300 different characteristics of your digit, like how close the ridges of your fingers are. It's a different kind of technology than what most readers use in today's phones.

Synaptics, which demoed the Vivo phone in a crowded booth at the back of an interminable hallway, says that the fingerprint reader won't suck up much more battery by illuminating your finger, promising that its power management is equal to industry standards.

Because the new technology costs more to make, it'll hit premium phones first before eventually making its way down the spectrum as the parts become more plentiful and cheaper to make.

Vivo's phone is the first one we've gotten to see with the tech in real life, but it's clear this is just the beginning.

Autonomous drone attacked soldiers in Libya all on its own

The fear of killer robots is as old as robots themselves -- thinkers like Elon Musk and Sam Harris have long argued that AI poses a serious threat to human civilization. But if you're at all panicked about AI or robots, a new UN report may add to your anxiety, as it explains that a drone attacked (and possibly killed) soldiers all on its own.

It's thought to be the first recorded case of an autonomous drone attack.

The incident occurred in March 2020 in Libya, a country that was in the midst of a civil war. Turkey, a key combatant in the war, deployed the STM Kargu-2 drone, according to the UN Security Council's Panel of Experts on Libya report. The drone, which the report refers to as a "lethal autonomous weapon," then found and attacked Libya's Haftar Armed Forces.

Logistics convoys and retreating forces were "hunted down and remotely engaged by lethal autonomous weapons systems such as the STM Kargu-2," the report reads. "The lethal autonomous weapons systems were programmed to attack targets without requiring data connectivity between the operator and the munition: in effect, a true 'fire, forget and find' capability."

The creator of the Kargu drone, STM, says the device "can be effectively used against static or moving targets through its indigenous and real-time image processing capabilities and machine learning algorithms embedded on the platform."

The UN in 2018 attempted to begin working on a treaty that would ban autonomous weapons, but the move was blocked by both the US and Russia, Politico reported at the time. Human Rights Watch has been campaigning against such weapons since 2013, and has backed a campaign to stop their spread.

"Killer robot proliferation has begun," tweeted Max Tegman, a machine learning researcher at MIT. "It's not in humanity's best interest that cheap slaughterbots are mass-produced and widely available to anyone with an axe to grind. It's high time for world leaders to step up and take a stand."

Galaxy S21 Ultra works with Samsung's S Pen stylus. Here's everything we know

Galaxy S21 Ultra works with Samsung's S Pen stylus. Here's everything we know

This story is part of CES, where CNET covers the latest news on the most incredible tech coming soon.

Samsung finally did it. The smartphone-maker just announced the Galaxy S21 lineup, and with it, the fact that the Galaxy S21 Ultra supports a feature that was once exclusive to the Galaxy Note ($500 at Samsung) family of phones: S Pen stylus support.

Read more: Check out CNET's Galaxy S21 review and Galaxy S21 Ultra review

That means S21 Ultra owners will soon be able to use the small digital pen to jot notes, take better screenshots, sign documents or draw in their favorite apps. There will be a number of things that the S Pen can do on the Note, however, that it won't be able to do on the Galaxy S21, and the stylus won't come with the S21 Ultra -- you'll have to buy it separately.

We'll walk you through the basics of the Galaxy S21 Ultra's stylus support, including S Pen compatibility, features and where you can store the stylus when not in use. (And here's how to use the new Samsung Galaxy SmartTag.)

Does the S21 Ultra come with an S Pen stylus?

It does not. You can buy one directly from Samsung for $40 that was designed specifically for the S21 Ultra. There are also two different styles of Samsung cases you can buy, both of which include an S Pen. They cost $70 each.

Alternatively, you can buy and use any S Pen stylus from Samsung, with prices ranging from $25 to $40.

Can I use the S Pen from a Galaxy Note or Galaxy Tab?

Yes. Samsung has said that the Galaxy S21 Ultra will work with an existing S Pen from a Galaxy Note phone or Galaxy Tab tablet. It won't be able to use every function, however (more below).

Does the S21 Ultra have a place to store the S Pen like the Galaxy Note?

No. Instead, you'll either have to buy an S21 Ultra case that's designed to hold the S Pen for you, or get really good at keeping track of the small stylus.

velveteen-rabbit-06150

The S Pen works to write or draw in your favorite apps.

James Martin/CNET

What can I do with the S Pen on the S21 Ultra?

You can use it to tap and navigate through various menus, write down your thoughts or take notes in the Samsung Notes app, or sketch out a new idea in your favorite drawing app.

What can't the S Pen do on the S21 Ultra that it can on Note phones?

The S Pen integration with the Galaxy S21 Ultra lacks Bluetooth support, which means you won't get the same gesture feature that allows you to do things like control slideshows or skip songs by flicking the stylus like a magic wand -- see below for the S Pen Pro.

Another downside to the lack of Bluetooth support is that you won't receive any alerts if you leave the S Pen behind. So if you walk away from the stylus, your phone won't buzz and notify you that the two are parted.

screen-shot-2021-01-14-at-11-22-40-am.png

The S21 Ultra will eventually gain more S Pen features, but you'll have to wait for the S Pen Pro.

Screenshot by CNET

Want more functionality? Wait for the S Pen Pro

Samsung briefly talked about the S Pen Pro, a new stylus the company plans to release later this year that will include Bluetooth features similar to what the Galaxy Note line has. During its Unpacked presentation, Samsung specifically called out the ability to use gestures with the S Pen Pro on the Galaxy S21 Ultra. We don't currently have a price or an exact release date, however. But if you want more than a basic stylus with your S21 Ultra, you might want to wait until the S Pen Pro is available.

We fully expect there will be more to the Galaxy S21 Ultra's new S Pen capabilities besides, but we'll have to wait until we get the S21 Ultra in our hands and start digging around before we can uncover more features. In the meantime, make sure to check out our initial impressions, and if you're looking to order a Galaxy S21 of your own, we cover everything you need to know to get one on launch day.

We used our long-term 2022 Kia Carnival to assist with a staff relocation from Detroit to Los Angeles. We encountered everything from rain to sleet and even snow and unrelenting sun.

Road grime is a fact of life on trips like this.

Yep, we packed it to the headliner. Here's a cold and ugly photo of a test fitting before we departed wintry Michigan.

Fuel economy could've been better, but the drag-adding roof box and our editor's heavy right foot didn't help matters.
