Lenovo IdeaPad 730S review: Thinner, lighter MacBook Air alternative

Lenovo IdeaPad 730S review: Thinner, lighter MacBook Air alternative

At 2.4 pounds (1.1 kg) and 11.9 mm thick (0.5 inch), the 13.3-inch Lenovo IdeaPad 730S is lighter and thinner than the current MacBook Air. Its quad-core Intel Core i5 processor, faster 2,400MHz memory and speedy Samsung PCIe solid-state drive give it better performance than the Air, too. Plus, it's less expensive, starting at $825, although the configuration reviewed here is just $770 at the moment.

I know what you're thinking, though: There's no alternative to a MacBook Air (or any Apple computer for that matter) because the others don't run MacOS. That is certainly true, so if you're looking for an apples-to-apples alternative -- no pun intended -- this won't do the trick. Nor will any other Windows laptop, really.

However, if you're not tied to MacOS for one reason or another, the IdeaPad 730S with Windows 10 ($144 at Amazon) is one of the best alternatives to a MacBook Air you'll find.

Clean and simple

The IdeaPad 730S started life back at IFA 2018 as the Yoga S730 as part of Lenovo switching its Yoga brand from strictly convertibles to being its premium line and adding an S and C to the names for "slim" clamshells and "convertible" two-in-ones. In fact, in the UK it's still the Yoga S730 and starts at £899. It's not currently available under either name in Australia.

That's the long way of saying the 730S has a more premium look and feel than Lenovo's entry-level IdeaPads. The iron-gray aluminum body is understated, as is the Lenovo branding, which is reduced to nothing more than a small tag on the lid's edge and a barely visible stamp at the bottom left of the bright and colorful full-HD display.

The keyboard is comfortable with a nice pop to the keys (and I doubt a little dust will shut it down). The silky-smooth touchpad is responsive as well without sending your cursor skittering across the screen from an errant palm. Even the speakers sound more full than you'll find on competing ultraportables due in part to the Dolby Atmos audio tuning. And despite the thin bezels around the display's top and sides, the webcam is above the display.

It's all dongles these days

Like a lot of superslim laptops, the 730S only has a combo headphone jack and USB-C ports: two USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 (one with always-on charging) and one USB-C 3.1 Gen 1. Unfortunately that means you'll need to buy dongles or a dock if you need a USB-A port, a memory card reader, an external display or whatever else.

On the upside, you can charge the laptop through any of the USB-C ports. You can also enable Lenovo's Rapid Charge feature to get your battery up to 80 percent in an hour, which works and it's great. Battery life is overall good, too, coming in at 8 hours and 8 minutes in our streaming video test. This is where the Air comes out ahead, running for 10 hours and 46 minutes in the same test. But that comes at the cost of a less powerful processor.

Highly portable productivity

The IdeaPad 730S isn't built for extreme performance and doesn't necessarily have the speed to handle everything. For everyday use for work and school, though, it doesn't disappoint for the price.

The 730S works fine for day-to-day tasks like web browsing, word processing and streaming video. Basic photo and video editing? Sure, no problem, but anything more demanding and you'll want discrete graphics, a faster processor and something with a more efficient cooling system.

To get this laptop so thin, Lenovo designed the cooling fan to pull air in through the keyboard. Under continued heavy load it struggled to stay cool even with the fan going full blast. But again, for basic use that's not really an issue and overall the design choice pays off.

The Lenovo IdeaPad 730S proves you don't need to spend more than $1,000 to get some of the benefits of an upscale ultraportable. Especially one that's light enough and small enough that you'll forget it's even in your bag.

Fake Banksy NFT sells for nearly $340K after hacker reportedly taps into artist's site

A hacker reportedly took advantage of a security flaw for the site of the artist Banksy and was able to set up a page to sell a fake non-fungible token, or NFT. The result was one person being out $336,000, which the hacker has apparently since returned -- minus a $5,000 transaction fee.

A hacker created a page on Banksy's site, "banksy.co.uk/NFT," that linked to an online auction for an NFT supposedly made by the artist, according to a report from the BBC on Tuesday. NFTs are tokens for digital assets such as a meme, a New York Times column or even a fart. Owning an NFT doesn't give an individual any rights to the asset or copyright. The trend of buying NFTs took off earlier in the year, especially for the art industry.

The winning bidder, who goes by the name of Pranksy, told the BBC he was informed by someone on Discord about the NFT auction on Monday. He provided a winning bid of 100 Ethererum, which amounts to approximately $336,000, for what he thought was Banksy's first NFT.

Later that day, the hacker who was responsible for the auction reportedly refunded the money minus the $5,000 transaction fee.

Some have speculated that the fake NFT auction could be an elaborate setup by Banksy, an artist known for pulling off audacious stunts. Banky's team told the BBC "any Banksy NFT auctions are not affiliated with the artist in any shape or form."

On Friday, the BBC said a cybersecurity expert had reached out to the artist's organization about security flaws with the website before the scam but never got a response.

Pest Control, the artist's representative and authentication body, didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Tips to Find the Right Therapist For You

Tips to Find the Right Therapist For You

The world throws a lot at you -- work, school, family and personal responsibilities. Stress and exhaustion can debilitate your physical and mental health. Talking to a trained professional is one way of relieving your burdens.

Due to the recent pandemic, the number of adults seeking therapy has skyrocketed. According to a survey conducted by the American Psychological Association in November of 2020, 74% of psychologists surveyed reported seeing more patients with anxiety, and 60% are seeing more patients with depression than before the start of the pandemic.

You aren't alone, and equally, you don't have to carry this weight on your own. Here is how to find the best therapist in your area.

Most common types of therapy

There are five main approaches to therapy: psychoanalysis, behavior, cognitive, humanistic and integrative. Within these five main categories, there are many specific types of therapy you might encounter. Here are the most common:

Cognitive Behavior Therapy : Therapy that identifies thought patterns that lead to negative feelings. CBT also teaches positive coping skills. It is used to treat a wide range of conditions like depression, anxiety, substance abuse and eating disorders.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy : This method focuses on regulating heavy emotions, connecting with others, finding healthy coping skills and integrating mindfulness. DBT is often used to treat borderline personality disorder in women, eating disorders and severe depression.

Client-Centered Therapy : This is a type of psychotherapy where the therapist doesn't give advice but rather offers great compassion, positivity and empathy. Through this process of talking and support, clients become self-aware. CCT is used to treat lots of conditions such as depression.

Psychodynamic Therapy : This type of talk therapy aims to find the psychological root of the problem or ailment while deeply understanding emotions. It is rooted in the idea that through talking about problems, clients can self-reflect and develop coping skills. It is often used to treat stress, anxiety and depression.

Beginning your healing journey may seem daunting, but the hardest part is knowing where to start. You have options and plenty of resources at your fingertips.

Here are a few starting places to consider.

Word of mouth

Ask your family and friends, peers and colleagues for recommendations. Word travels fast about the best therapists in the area.

Your healthcare provider

Oftentimes, your healthcare provider will have a mental health unit. Look at the directory or ask your primary physician.

Online resources

The most common means for finding a mental health professional is a quick Google search of therapists available in your area. If those results get too overwhelming, here are some tools that break it down for you.

Specialized resources:

Local groups

You can look into local resources if you have depleted your online options. Your school, church, community or workplace might have connections to professionals in the area or in online programs (often at a discounted rate, especially if it is through your university or place of work).

Local support groups are another great way to not only connect with a trained physician but others in similar situations. You can locate local support groups through Mental Health America and Psychology Today.

Narrowing the search

You have found a few individual therapists after much searching -- now what? How do you know if one is a better fit for you than another? Here are a few aspects to consider before booking the first appointment with a new therapist:

Are they well-versed in your area of concern?

Choose someone who has experience treating your condition, whether that be grief, trauma, anxiety or depression.

Do they serve your age group?

Look for their area of expertise; some therapists only take child clients.

Are they covered by insurance?

Some practitioners are covered by Medicare or Medicaid or other private insurance providers. If you are worried about paying out of pocket, find out if your insurance covers your sessions.

Do they speak your preferred language?

Your comfortability is key. The right therapist for you will speak the language you feel most at ease with.

Is your therapist right for you?

You finally found a therapist that you like and scheduled your first session. There is still a chance that this professional may not be the perfect fit for you. During your first or second appointment, ask yourself:

Am I comfortable sharing personal information with this person?

Do I feel truly understood and heard?

Will this person help me reach the goals I have set for myself?

Does this person validate my experiences?

Do I feel as if I am the center of our conversations?

If you answer "no" to any of these questions, chances are this therapist isn't a good fit for you. It might take a few tries to find the right one.

Remember that therapy will not always be comfortable, but you need to make sure your provider creates a space that is welcoming. There is no shame in having to tell a professional that you may not be a good match, and they should do the same for you. Repeat these steps as many times as you wish until you find the best therapist for you.

The information contained in this article is for educational and informational purposes only and is not intended as health or medical advice. Always consult a physician or other qualified health provider regarding any questions you may have about a medical condition or health objectives.

2022 GMC Hummer EV Already Recalled, Also Already Fixed

If you've ever been behind a car without functioning taillights, even stopping at a red light can become quite the harrowing act. That might've been a problem for drivers stuck behind GMC's flashy new Hummer EV, if the automaker didn't bust its humps to get its cars fixed by the time the recall was made public.

General Motors last week issued a recall for the 2022 GMC Hummer EV. The issue affected just 10 vehicles that rolled off GM's line in Detroit, carrying production dates between October 2021 and January 2022.

The problem stems from the taillights -- specifically the fact that they weren't exactly working. According to the defect report filed with NHTSA, software controlling the taillamps could cause one or both lights to become inoperative or illuminate at the wrong time. And when it broke, it broke, disabling the brake light, turn signal, reverse light and side marker. In other cases, the lights would remain on even after the vehicle was turned off. In case you're wondering, this is a violation of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108, "Lamps, reflective devices and associated equipment."

GM discovered the issue after an employee received two field reports of taillamps that weren't working correctly. After opening its own investigation, GM discovered the issue and started taking the steps to initiate a recall. Replacing the taillights with parts that have the correct software is all it takes to fix the issue.

In fact, it was such a straightforward fix, that all 10 affected vehicles have already been fixed. In an email to Motor1, a GMC representative said that the automaker reached out directly to every affected owner and already replaced the taillights. Other Hummer EVs were affected, as well, but as they were still in GM's possession, they too have been fixed.

AMD to acquire chipmaker Xilinx for $35B as chipmakers race to be the biggest

AMD has entered an agreement to acquire Xilinx for $35 billion, AMD said Tuesday. It's an effort to make AMD "the industry's high-performance computing leader," according to Lisa Su, the company's chief executive. The two firms would focus on producing a variety of chips and software for PCs and gaming, as well as products and software across the automative, communications, industrial, aerospace and defense industries.

"Joining together with AMD will help accelerate growth in our datacenter business and enable us to pursue a broader customer base across more markets," said Xilinx CEO Victor Peng.

Su would be the chief executive of the combined company, while Peng would become president of the Xilinx business arm. The combined company has an estimated value of $135 billion, but the acquisition has yet to pass regulatory hurdles, including approval by AMD and Xilinx shareholders. AMD said it expects to close the deal by the end of 2021.

If it were to pass regulatory review, the acquisition would be part of a wave of consolidation sweeping the chip industry, as semiconductor companies scramble to build products packed into phones, PCs, data centers, cars and other computing devices. Nvidia is trying to buy Arm, a designer of chips and chip technology used in every smartphone, a major expansion beyond Nvidia's business of graphics and artificial intelligence chips.

Xilinx makes an unusual type of processor called an FPGA, short for field programmable gate array. Most processors have a fixed design, but FPGAs can be reprogrammed to perform many different tasks. They're expensive, but companies making network equipment have long relied on them to support the newest communications standards.

FPGAs also are useful when it comes to 5G equipment and chips to accelerate artificial intelligence work. One big Xilinx priority is AI chips.

A merged AMD and Xilinx could also become "a leading supplier of compute platforms in the next high-growth segment of computing: at the edge of the network in base stations," analyst firm Jefferies said. "In contrast to the data center, where we think a general purpose architecture wins, we think the edge will require low-latency, semi-custom, workload specific solutions, which are XLNX and AMD strengths."

Intel acquired Xilinx competitor Altera in 2015. AMD and Intel have long been the main suppliers of chips for PCs and data centers. Though AMD for a time seemed to be dying, the company has instead become a powerhouse, partly because it gave up its manufacturing operations and bet on ultrahigh-performance chips for data centers. Intel, meanwhile, has struggled lately with product delays and has exited markets, like that for 5G mobile chips.

How a $50 gadget is saving $840 a year on my electricity bill

Each month for the past six months, my electric company has sent me a letter in the mail to let me know my household uses more energy than my neighbors. (Shocking, I know.)

Out of the closest 100 homes, I paid more than anyone else. In other words, my home ranked dead last, at 100.

Soon after the first letter, I turned into my parents and hounded my kids each time I caught them leaving a light on. I installed LED bulbs and we switched our Xbox One's energy-saving mode on. The next month, our bill was no better, and my wife and I once again nabbed the 100th spot.

Putting our pride aside, we decided it was time to get serious and see just where our electricity (and cash) was being drained throughout our home.

How the WeMo Insight saved me $70 a month

IFTTT makes everything better

The WeMo Insight Switch IFTTT channel has plenty of free, useful recipes like this one.

Screenshot by Rich Brown

Using Belkin's $50 WeMo Insight -- a small device you can plug anything into to find out its energy costs -- I methodically went around the house, plugging various appliances into the gadget. I would leave each appliance plugged in for three to four days to get a generalized estimate of usage. Of course, the longer you leave something plugged in to Insight, the more accurate the cost estimate will be.

$2.50 a month to run this 10-gallon fish tank? I'll take it.

Jason Cipriani/CNET

I started with our fish tank and discovered it sets us back about $2.50 a month to run. Then I moved to an old refrigerator in our basement used for keeping boxes of Popsicles and random drinks cool for us. To my surprise, that old pile of scrap metal was costing us over $40 per month in electricity. We replaced it the next day with a deep freezer-turned-refrigerator that now costs us less than $1 per month.

Our main refrigerator was sucking $27 worth of electricity, and has since been replaced (I haven't had a chance to figure its monthly cost yet). Lastly, I discovered the small space heater I was using to make my office livable during the cold Colorado winters was averaging $98 per month to run -- an insane amount. I'll be replacing it when the weather starts to cool down again.

Belkin's product isn't the only device that can help you save money. iDevice's Switch does the same thing, and is priced around $40. Neurio takes a broader approach, attaching to your home's breaker panel to monitor the devices plugged into your grid for energy use.
