For the first time, AMD aggressively targets 4K gaming with its top-end PC graphics cards, the Radeon RX 6800, 6800 XT and 6900 XT; the company has typically stuck to the middle and lower end of the spectrum, with its previous-generation RX 5700 XT designed for 1440p play. All the new cards incorporate the RDNA 2.0  architecture that's in its GPUs for the upcoming Xbox Series X and S and PS5consoles and directly take on the new Ampere-architecture GeForce RTX 3090, 3080 and 3070 recently launched by Nvidia. The difference -- and the caveat -- this go-round is that the GPUs have been optimized s o that they achieve peak performance when used in conjunction with the company's new Ryzen 5000 series of desktop CPUs.

Hardware performance improvements stem partly from the higher-density on-die Infinity Cache design (all have 128MB) and enhanced design of the compute units (including a new Ray Accelerator core for each compute unit), which combine to improve the memory subsystem by reducing the latency of moving data around, increase bandwidth by up to 2.2x with a narrower path (256 bits) and deliver better energy efficiency. That also allows the processors to hit higher clock frequencies without a substantial increase in power requirements. A new Rage Mode in AMD's driver toggles one-click overclocking.

RDNA 2's deliberately cross-platform (meaning console and PC) design allows the cards to support the same next-gen capabilities on PC and Xbox, such as ray-tracing-related programming calls for faster and improved lighting-related rendering like shadows and reflections, since both Windows and the new Xboxes essentially use the same DirectX 12 Ultimate programming interface and AMD's own FidelityFX toolset. It also enables support for Microsoft'sDirectStorage programming interface, which accelerates SSD access by circumventing the CPU  to improve storage-intensive game tasks like load times.

AMD has numbers showing comparable performance between the RX 6900 XT and GeForce RTX 3090 -- a card significantly more expensive and power-hungry -- but there's a big caveat: They're run using the cards' new Smart Access Memory. SAM basically gives the card direct access to main system memory, but only when configured in a system with one of the new Ryzen 5000 series CPUs. AMD claims that SAM combined with Rage Mode boosts frame rates by up to 13%, which means performance on Intel systems or upgraded systems won't be as good. 

It will probably still be good enough given the price, power requirement and size differentials between the cards, though Nvidia's have better specs at every price -- or at least at the suggested prices. We'll only know once the games begin. As usual, there are likely to be some lower-end models in the queue, unless AMD decides to leave its $400-ish RX 5700 XT-based and lower cards on the market to feed the need for inexpensive 1080p and 1440p gaming, and hopefully they'll appear in time for holiday shopping.

You've gotta love an industry that keeps tossing out new gaming graphics processors that get snatched out of midair before you can catch them. The latest in what I hope is the last of these launches for a while is AMD's Radeon RX 6700 XT, the new entry-level graphics card in the company's RX 6000 generation. It follows the recently launched RX 6800, 6800 XT and 6900 and the GeForce RTX 3060, Nvidia's introduced entry-level card that incorporates its latest Ampere architecture. Based on its $479 price and its overall performance, the 6700 XT competes with the similarly priced RTX 3060 Ti and RTX 3070. 

The card ships March 18, with AMD offering both its own cards and third-party alternatives from all the usual suspects. It will also be available in regular retail PCs; HP has already announced that it's planning to add the card as an option in its Omen 25L and 30L desktops at the end of March, along with an AMD Ryzen 9 5900X option so you can take advantage of AMD's Smart Memory Access. AMD recently expanded SMA support down to the older Ryzen 3000 series CPUs as well.

"Available" is a moving target for graphics cards these days. Pervasive shortages due to high demand by cryptocurrency miners, the efficiency of bots at snapping them up as fast as they go on sale, pandemic-related silicon shortages and other ancillary problems have made it nearly impossible for the rest of us to get our hands on any card worth buying and at a price that even remotely reflects the true worth of it. (A direct conversion of the price is laughable in this context, but $479 is approximately £340 or AU$610.)

Nvidia attempted to address the out-of-stock problem by throttling the RTX 3060's mining-related performance, but soon after Nvidia itself accidentally circumvented the performance limiter with a driver update. (The driver was subsequently pulled.) I still expect the throttle to get hacked if the shortage goes on much longer. Which we expect.

AMD, on the other hand, is taking a more traditional supply-side approach which I don't have a lot of confidence in: working with retailers to restrict sales to one per customer, making both third-party and its own cards simultaneously available at launch, keeping its own cards on sale for a longer period (it usually stops selling its own after a certain amount of time post launch) and other tactics.

The RX 6700 XT is a strong 1440p performer, hovering around the RTX 3070's spot. It generally lags that card but occasionally pulls ahead. Its one weak area looks like ray tracing, where it falls behind even the RTX 3060 on 3DMark's DXR (DirectX ray tracing) test. Unsurprising, given that Nvidia's got a generation of experience under its belt.

But with the 6700 XT, AMD continues to maintain its overall performance advantage over Nvidia's competing consumer cards for professional graphics. It doesn't require an optimized driver (like Nvidia's Studio drivers) or proprietary API support (Nvidia CUDA). Toss in the 6700 XT's 12GB of memory, and it's an excellent choice at its nominal price for video editing, notably Premiere Pro (as measured by UL's Procyon video editing benchmark, at least). It is bigger and more power hungry than the RTX 3070, however.

In the absence of rational real-world prices or availability, it's hard to make any sort of blanket recommendation for any graphics card at the moment. As long as the Radeon RX 6700 XT's price doesn't get too high, whatever that means -- though it will likely remain lower than equivalent or faster cards -- it's a good choice for 1440p gamers and creatives on a budget. Especially if you're both.

The latest step in the graphics card pas de deux between AMD and Nvidia is the AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT GPU. It's also the current entry-level model in AMD's line of graphics processors for gamers specifically looking for speed or higher quality in 1080p resolution. The RX 6600 XT's nominal $379 price and performance slots seamlessly between Nvidia's $329 GeForce RTX 3060 and $399 3060 Ti -- all in the seemingly choreographed fashion we're used to from the two manufacturers.

Both AMD and Nvidia are desperately attempting to get gamers to upgrade from the four-year-old GeForce GTX 1060, which still has the biggest installed base. But this is the absolute worst time to buy a graphics card... and has been for a while. Yes, the cryptocurrency mining crackdown in China and regulatory smackdown in Europe may lessen the demand for GPUs, but we're still in the middle of a silicon supply crunch that affects many components of graphics cards and that's expected to last at least until the end of the year. So it's bound to keep availability low, shopbots busy and prices high. And if you're looking at these low-ish end cards, you're probably really price-sensitive to begin with, making it a doubly bad time -- unless you're de sperate.

Like Nvidia's 3060 models, there's no official AMD-branded version of a card using the RX 6600 XT GPU, so we tested the Asus ROG Strix RX 6600 XT OC, a $550 dual-fan overclockable model that acquits itself well for what it is. (There's also a smaller, lower-key version of the card in the Asus Dual product line line for $500.) But in our testing, the 6600 XT at best matched or marginally outpaced the RTX 3060, even conservatively overclocked, which at least partly stems from the AMD GPU's 8-lane PCIe connection rather than NVIDIA's 16-lane connection. However, without knowing what the actual-real-true prices are as opposed to the what-planet-do-you-live-on prices, it's difficult to make a call about which GPU to recommend you make a fruitless attempt to buy.

The lesser slot requirement may make it a little more flexible for fitting into older systems, but it really cuts potential performance; if it took advantage of the higher-bandwidth slot it might give the 3060 Ti some competition.

Asus has done a fine job eking out what it can from the GPU and it certainly delivers on the 1080p high-frame-rate promise. Physically, the card's a bit chunky for what it delivers at 2.6 slots wide, but the space allocated to the passive cooling (four heatpipes forcing the heat toward a large heat spreader and heatsink) allows it to reduce reliance on the fans at high speeds. This makes it pretty quiet and I kept having to check the monitoring utility to convince myself the fans were even spinning.

In addition to monitoring, the GPU Tweak 2 utility Asus provides lets you choose from a silent mode (with a 0dB fan toggle), gaming mode (which weights performance, cooling and noise equally) and an OC mode to maximize performance via an overclock preset or manual controls over the GPU and memory clocks, voltage, fan speed and a power target. Like the other cards in the line, there's also a toggle switch to jump between two BIOSes, one optimized for performance and the other for noise.

You can use the company's Armoury Crate software to control the logo lighting scheme, but I'm not a big fan of the software; it's just too cumbersome for my taste.

The GPU has passive cooling in addition to the fans, with four heat pipes and a backplate heat spreader across most of the card and a vent on the inside end. A physical BIOS switch lets you change between two modes (performance vs. quiet) if you don't want to use Asus' Tweak UI utility.

The card supports all the latest AMD features. They include Radeon Boost (which selectively renders scene elements at a lower resolution, based on visibility, for higher frame rates), Radeon Anti-Lag (reduces latency by lightening the load on the CPU), FidelityFX Super Resolution (upscaling from lower-resolution textures to achieve faster frame rates, a la Nvidia DLSS) and Smart Access Memory (AMD's Resizable BAR implementation, in which the CPU can store game-related data in GPU RAM rather than system RAM so the GPU doesn't have to traverse the system bus to retrieve it).  

AMD is less reliant on developer support than Nvidia for much of its acceleration, but it's not entirely driver-based. Smart Access Memory only works on systems equipped with a modern AMD Ryzen CPU, for example. 

Unless you're looking for the cheapest RX 6000-series AMD options, I don't think the RX 6600 XT is the best choice for its price class; the RTX 3060 Ti seems like it delivers far better performance for (theoretically) not much more. And I wouldn't rule out an even lower-end model appearing later this year to satisfy your budget-constrained 1080p play -- there was an RX 5500, so it's always possible we'll see even lower end RX 6500 or RX 6500 XT models at some point for basic 1080p gaming.

Nvidia's GeForce RTX 3070 Ti is literally the most middling GPU of the past year, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. On almost every gaming performance test I've run, the 3070 Ti delivered the median score in a field of RTX 3000 series and AMD Radeon RX 6000 series cards, more or less. 

Nvidia positions the starting-price $599 (£529, AU$979) GPU, which excels at 1440p and entry 4K gaming, as the natural upgrade from the RTX 2070 Super. But if you're looking to save a little money (or potentially a lot, given the state of GPU supplies) even the cheaper RTX 3070 will give you a big performance lift over the previous generation under most conditions. You'll be able to buy it, in theory, starting June 10.

The design of the 3070 Ti is different from that of the 3070; it's about an inch longer and there's a fan on either side of the card, in contrast to the 3070, which has both fans on one side. It still vents out the back of the card. In fact, though it's about 0.5 inch shorter than the RTX 3080 and RTX 3080 Ti, the 3070 Ti bears the most resemblance to the 3080, with the exception of some cosmetics.

On the inside, it has exactly 4.35% more of everything than the 3070: RT cores, CUDA Cores, texture mapping units, streaming multiprocessors and Tensor cores -- almost like the product was designed by an algorithm asking "What GPU can we sell at $599, midway between the RTX 3070 and 3080?" rather than to answer "What do gamers need now?" A bigger difference is the upgrade to higher-bandwidth (by about 30%) GDDR6X memory. The price you pay is a 16% increase over the RTX 3070 in power requirements, as well as the bigger size.

It delivers excellent 1440p performance, but there are very few situations in which it delivers a significant advantage -- in other words, worth the price premium -- over the cheaper RTX 3070 for gaming; it's typically around 6%-8% faster, with the occasional bump to about 10%. Similarly, AMD's competing Radeon RX 6800 delivers the same or slightly better performance in many games, as long as you don't care about the ray tracing, for a little less.

There were some cases, on Watch Dogs: Legion and Shadow of the Tomb Raider benchmarks in 1440p, for example, where my CPU bottlenecked frame rates occasionally in 1440p. It's an 8-core Core i7-10700K (not overclocked), though, which from a price/performance perspective should be an appropriate match for the RTX 3070 series. GPU performance can be extremely configuration dependent (although the synthetic benchmarks bore out the results), and all I can really say is that for my test configuration, it's no slam dunk.

But there are some notable exceptions. On 3DMark's Mesh Shaders test -- a new feature in DirectX 12 Ultimate that more efficiently, and therefore more quickly, handles rendering of complex geometry -- it was more than 1.5 times faster than the RTX 3070 and only a little slower than the RTX 3080 Ti, which means you should see at least some lift in frame rates once it's implemented. As far as I can tell, there aren't any PC games shipping now which support mesh shaders, and Unreal Engine 5, the next version of the popular game development platform and which should help broaden the use of mesh shaders, is still in early access.

The higher-bandwidth memory also gives it a boost on some creative applications, thanks to the higher-bandwidth memory, extra CUDA cores and more.

This is such a weird time to shop for a graphics card, especially midrange ones; chip production delays, combined with GPU-hungry cryptocurrency miners snapping up all available inventory and manufacturers and distributors jacking up prices to take advantage of the demand bubble, has turned buying a GPU into a boss battle of epic proportions.

Despite Nvidia's introduction of cryptomining-optimized cards (its CMP HX) and throttling the mining performance of gaming GPUs (now retronymmed LHR for low hash rate), things still don't look especially promising. The RTX 3080 Ti launched last week and it's already out of stock -- even Nvidia's own cards. Try buying a PS5 instead: you've got a better chance of snagging even that ludicrously hard-to-find console than a current GPU, especially at a reasonable price.
