Nvidia's GeForce RTX 3070 may end up suffering from middle-child syndrome, squeezed between the two ends of Nvidia's GPU spectrum: basic 1440p for a little less or basic 4K/high-frame rate 1440p for a little more. The GeForce RTX 3070 Founders Edition of the $499 (£469, AU$809) graphics card I tested is geared toward high-frame rate/quality 1440p gaming, and delivers similar performance to the RTX 2080 Ti for most uses (but not all), which debuted at $999. The boost over its predecessor, the more expensive RTX 2070 Super, depends upon what you need it to do. 

The release of the 3070 follows the bumpy launch of the $699 RTX 3080 and its $1,500 sibling, the RTX 3090, both experiencing price gouging due to shortages. But rumors have also surfaced about a slightly cheaper RTX 3060 Ti coming soon as well as a new card slotted between the 3070 and 3080. Plus, it's likely we'll get an entry-level 30 series card early next year to feed the mid-$300 buyers. And that doesn't take into account AMD's launch of its ambitious Radeon RX 6000-series "Big Navi" gaming cards that use the same architecture as the upcoming Xbox Series X and S and PS5consoles.

Like the RTX 3080-based graphics cards, the Ampere-generation of the company's GPU architecture achieves playable frame rates in games that use RTX-specific features like ray-tracing and global illumination. Its AI-based upscaling feature, DLSS, lets you finally game at better-than-bare-minimum frame rates without visible degradation in quality. The GPU also lifts performance over predecessors in games that don't take advantage of the whizzy features by about 10% to 20% on average, which is really most games.   

Unlike its higher-end siblings, the 3070 uses older GDDR6 memory and has the same memory bandwidth as the 2070 Super. It still gets some performance boosts thanks to the second-gen ray tracing and third-gen Tensor cores, such as new algorithms and instruction sets that make them a lot more efficient and a switch to an 8nm process size from 12nm. And as is typical, it has increased core counts -- it has a lower ray-tracing core count but the Ampere RT cores are doubled-up over the Turing cores, so technically the 3070 has more. But you won't see the same uplift that the 3080 and 3090 received over earlier models.

It's also significantly less power-hungry than the higher-end cards, roughly the same as before, plus it's the same size as the 2080 Ti. While the 3070 has a similar 12-pin power connector design to the 3080 -- including an adapter in the box -- it still only connects to a single 8-pin block from the power supply. All of that means it's a much simpler upgrade, especially in tight systems. The Founders Edition, at least, ran cool and quiet during my testing, in a system where I swapped it for the 2070 Super.

I have no complaints about the RTX 3070's performance, and it's definitely worth its $499 price tag. But it may not be your best choice for the money. The Ti models generally have more memory and slightly wider data paths than the non-Ti models, which is why you'll find the 11GB 2080 Ti occasionally outperforming the 8GB 3070. It makes sense to wait and see if an RTX 3060 Ti or intermediate option between the 3070 and 3080 become reality and what AMD rolls out later this week.

Nvidia's GeForce RTX 3070 Ti is literally the most middling GPU of the past year, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. On almost every gaming performance test I've run, the 3070 Ti delivered the median score in a field of RTX 3000 series and AMD Radeon RX 6000 series cards, more or less. 

Nvidia positions the starting-price $599 (£529, AU$979) GPU, which excels at 1440p and entry 4K gaming, as the natural upgrade from the RTX 2070 Super. But if you're looking to save a little money (or potentially a lot, given the state of GPU supplies) even the cheaper RTX 3070 will give you a big performance lift over the previous generation under most conditions. You'll be able to buy it, in theory, starting June 10.

The design of the 3070 Ti is different from that of the 3070; it's about an inch longer and there's a fan on either side of the card, in contrast to the 3070, which has both fans on one side. It still vents out the back of the card. In fact, though it's about 0.5 inch shorter than the RTX 3080 and RTX 3080 Ti, the 3070 Ti bears the most resemblance to the 3080, with the exception of some cosmetics.

On the inside, it has exactly 4.35% more of everything than the 3070: RT cores, CUDA Cores, texture mapping units, streaming multiprocessors and Tensor cores -- almost like the product was designed by an algorithm asking "What GPU can we sell at $599, midway between the RTX 3070 and 3080?" rather than to answer "What do gamers need now?" A bigger difference is the upgrade to higher-bandwidth (by about 30%) GDDR6X memory. The price you pay is a 16% increase over the RTX 3070 in power requirements, as well as the bigger size.

It delivers excellent 1440p performance, but there are very few situations in which it delivers a significant advantage -- in other words, worth the price premium -- over the cheaper RTX 3070 for gaming; it's typically around 6%-8% faster, with the occasional bump to about 10%. Similarly, AMD's competing Radeon RX 6800 delivers the same or slightly better performance in many games, as long as you don't care about the ray tracing, for a little less.

There were some cases, on Watch Dogs: Legion and Shadow of the Tomb Raider benchmarks in 1440p, for example, where my CPU bottlenecked frame rates occasionally in 1440p. It's an 8-core Core i7-10700K (not overclocked), though, which from a price/performance perspective should be an appropriate match for the RTX 3070 series. GPU performance can be extremely configuration dependent (although the synthetic benchmarks bore out the results), and all I can really say is that for my test configuration, it's no slam dunk.

But there are some notable exceptions. On 3DMark's Mesh Shaders test -- a new feature in DirectX 12 Ultimate that more efficiently, and therefore more quickly, handles rendering of complex geometry -- it was more than 1.5 times faster than the RTX 3070 and only a little slower than the RTX 3080 Ti, which means you should see at least some lift in frame rates once it's implemented. As far as I can tell, there aren't any PC games shipping now which support mesh shaders, and Unreal Engine 5, the next version of the popular game development platform and which should help broaden the use of mesh shaders, is still in early access.

The higher-bandwidth memory also gives it a boost on some creative applications, thanks to the higher-bandwidth memory, extra CUDA cores and more.

This is such a weird time to shop for a graphics card, especially midrange ones; chip production delays, combined with GPU-hungry cryptocurrency miners snapping up all available inventory and manufacturers and distributors jacking up prices to take advantage of the demand bubble, has turned buying a GPU into a boss battle of epic proportions.

Despite Nvidia's introduction of cryptomining-optimized cards (its CMP HX) and throttling the mining performance of gaming GPUs (now retronymmed LHR for low hash rate), things still don't look especially promising. The RTX 3080 Ti launched last week and it's already out of stock -- even Nvidia's own cards. Try buying a PS5 instead: you've got a better chance of snagging even that ludicrously hard-to-find console than a current GPU, especially at a reasonable price.

The next time -- or the first time -- you go shopping for a laptop with at least an Intel Core i7 H-class processor, 16GB or more RAM, 512GB or larger SSD and an Nvidia RTX GPU, it may bear an "RTX Studio" sticker as part of a new program Nvidia announced at Computex 2019.

But that high-powered laptop, such as the Razer Blade Advanced or Asus ROG Zephyrus GX701, doesn't have the work behind it that the RTX Studio laptops have, which includes specific programming interfaces for pro graphics software companies to add more GPU acceleration to their applications or the workflow testing of the drivers with the hardware and software.

And the Quadro RTX Studio models promise breakthrough power for video, 3D, AI-assisted features in creative applications and coding with AI. They incorporate the new Quadro RTX 5000, 4000 and 3000, the first Quadros that can be used in systems the size of Max-Q gaming laptops. And the RTX 5000 is first 16GB mobile GPU Nvidia's been able to adapt to systems already designed around the GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q.

They're essentially workstation-class variants of the Max-Q versions of the gaming-focused GeForce RTX 2080, 2070 and 2060. That means no more needing to schlep a 10-pound Windows system or underpowered MacBook Pro for, say, onsite video editing. And photographers can finally get the 10-bit color support in Windows (i.e., Photoshop) that they need in a truly portable, though likely not inexpensive, machine. 

Mobile workstations with the top-end Quadro chips have traditionally been big and heavy, and frequently 17-inch models, because of the power requirements: The RTX 5000 draws between 80 and 100 watts (Nvidia's Optimus technology dynamically adjusts), which makes it easier to adapt existing laptop designs for them. The older P5200 requires 150w.  

The new Quadros are also the first generation of the company's mobile GPUs to incorporate the ray-tracing and Tensor (for AI acceleration) cores that differentiate them from their Pascal predecessors, the Quadro P5200, P4200 and P3200. Those are becoming increasingly important as more professional software boosts capabilities via AI algorithms like Adobe's Sensei and makes working in 3D with reasonable real-time rendering quality less painful.

Like their predecessors, they're also the only VR-ready Quadro chips in the new lineup and the only ones that can use GDDR6 memory; that bump seems to deliver a lot higher memory bandwidth, at least based on Nvidia's specs. 

While I define a mobile workstation as any mobile device with a CPU or GPU that gets certified by professional software applications, Nvidia defines it by size, weight and manufacturer. That way the company and its partners can refer to these as "studio laptops" rather than using the marketing-kiss-of-death "mobile workstation" to distinguish the them from high-powered GeForce-based systems.

Remember the "Creator Ready" driver track Nvidia launched in March? Now that driver-release cycle has been redubbed as Nvidia Studio Drivers, though it still works with the same set of not-necessarily-Studio GPUs: Turing- and Pascal-based GeForce cards and as far back as the Volta-based Titan V.

Seventeen manufacturers are debuting with RTX Studio laptops, including Acer, Asus, Dell, Gigabyte, HP, MSI and Razer. 

Nvidia's launched other members of the updated mobile Quadro line as well. There are also new Quadro analogs for the GeForce GTX 16- series, in that the Quadro T2000 and T1000 use the new Turing architecture but lack the RT and Tensor cores. However, moving to Turing still delivers better parallel processing, adaptive shaders and a unified memory architecture, which should add up to a modest performance boost.

And for the budget-minded, the Pascal P600 and P500 get a bit of a speed bump for the P620 and P520, gaining more CUDA cores and slightly higher memory bandwidth.

Acer Predator 15 review: A gaming laptop that keeps its cool

"Why do all these gaming laptops look like sneakers?" That was the question my wife -- herself no stranger to gaming -- asked when I lifted the lid on the latest version of Acer's 15-inch Predator laptop. It may seem like an odd question for ask about a computer, but I immediately understood the point. Where most mainstream laptops go for understated minimalism, and indeed try their best to fade into the background, gaming laptops (and desktops) are invariably covered with accented bling.

There can be menacing red lights, textured interior surfaces that look like the bed of a pickup truck, plastic vents with shark-like fins. It's all part of a visual language that attempts to communicate the power and capability of the interior components, which are invisible to the naked eye. Even the Razer Blade line of laptops, arguably the least gaudy of gaming systems, have that company's neon green logo of conjoined snakes on the back, and a pulsing multicolor lightshow under the keyboard.

Yes, the Acer Predator 15 follows many of those gaming laptop tropes, but I actually liked some parts of its design. At the very least, it's gaudy in its own way, and doesn't directly copy the look of other gaming laptops too closely. I especially liked red keyshafts on the arrow keys and WASD keys (especially important keys for PC gaming). There's also a pleasingly consistent design sense from the red speakers on the front edge through to the red border around the giant air vent in on the rear edge.

Dorm-friendly design aside, the most notable thing about the Predator 15 is that this is a rare opportunity to get a high-end Nvidia 980M gaming graphics card in a smaller 15-inch laptop. Typically, we see the 970M and 980M cards in larger 17-inch laptops, while smaller 15-inch gaming laptops usually get stuck with the mainstream-level Nvidia 960M graphics card, which is no slouch, but isn't what serious game-players are looking for.

However, keep in mind that this laptop is on the larger side of the 15-inch spectrum. You can place it next to a 17-inch gaming laptop and the size difference is not going to be as dramatic as, for example, a slim 15-inch HP Omen versus a typical 17-inch gaming laptop. That Omen was 4.7 pounds (2.13kg), versus 8.0 pounds (3.6kg) for the Predator.

This configuration is the high-end of the 15-inch Predator line, with an Intel Core i7-6700HQ CPU, 32GB of RAM, a big 512GB SSD coupled with a 1TB HDD and the Nvidia 980M GPU, for a total of $2,499 in the US. Cutting the SSD to 256GB and the RAM to 16GB gets you down to a more reasonable $1,999, while keeping the high-end CPU/GPU combo. About the least you can spend on a mainstream gaming laptop with an Nvida 980M card today is about $1,700, which can snag a slightly older 17-inch Asus G751.

Different configurations are available in the UK and Australia, topping out in the UK at £1,499 for the same CPU/GPU combo, but with only 16GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD, while configurations in Australia start at $AU2,999.

Packing an Nvidia 980M card into a smaller 15-inch body has the potential for causing heat issues, and Acer does a number of things to make sure the system can take full advantage of its components without overheating. First, the included optical drive can be swapped out for a fan module -- I ended up leaving the fan in, as I can't recall the last time I used a laptop optical drive. Acer also includes a feature it calls DustDefender, which alternates airflow direction on the internal fans to keep dust from building up. Some built-in Acer software can monitor CPU and system temperature, and also manually crank the fans up to maximum speed, which can get loud.

The Acer Predator was a strong performer in both our application performance tests and gaming tests, as expected from this powerful combination of components. Among recent gaming laptops, it did especially well in games and 3D tests, in some cases behind only the Origin PC Eon17-SLX, which is an odd outlier of a system with desktop-level components inside.

Frankly, any of the systems we've seen with the current-gen Nvidia 970M or 980M mobile GPUs are more than powerful enough for newer games, from Fallout 4 to The Division, and not just at 1,920x1,080 resolution, but even up to 4K. One thing none of these laptops -- except for that desktop-like Eon17-SLX -- will do is work with the upcoming Oculus Rift and HTC Vive VR headsets, because mobile GPUs are not supported.

Battery life for the Predator 15 was surprisingly good for a gaming laptop, although there's plenty of room for large battery in that bulky chassis. It ran for 5:50 on our streaming video test, which is more than double the battery life of most other serious gaming laptops.

Conclusion

As gaming laptops typically share the same components and offer similar performance, picking one largely depends on your preference for screen size, design, and extra features, such as an optical drive, overclocking software or a fancy light-up keyboard.

There are a couple of reasons why the excellent Acer Predator 15 stands out from the crowd. It has excellent battery life; plenty of cooling options; and a design that, while still aggressively dorky, packs our favorite mobile GPU into a slightly smaller, more portable body than usual.
