How to edit video on the iPhone

How to edit video on the iPhone

Screenshot by Jason Cipriani

Video editing on the iPhone was first introduced with the iPhone 3GS, yet some iPhone owners still don't realize how easy this feature is to use. It is incredibly simple to quickly edit a video you just shot so that you can send a specific moment to friends and family members. This can also come in handy when a video is a bit to long to send; quickly trim unnecessary portions of the video out, thus reducing the file size and enabling you to send it. Read on to learn how to edit video on your iPhone.

We have already shown you how to use iMovie on the iPhone 4, but for some of you, iMovie may be overkill for a simple edit, especially if title screens and transitions aren't needed. Here is an easier method.

To get started, launch the Photos app on your iPhone and open the video you want to edit.

Click to enlarge Screenshot by Jason Cipriani

While viewing the video (before playing it) you will see a bar that includes frames from the video. On each end of this bar, you will see a spot that allows you to touch-and-drag each end to a new start or stop point for the video.

Click to enlarge Screenshot by Jason Cipriani

Once you have moved either of the ends, the bar will turn yellow. The yellow bars indicate you have cut out portions of the video. You will also see a yellow Trim button in the top-right corner. At the bottom of the screen will be a single Play button. You can press that button at any time to see what you have trimmed the clip down to.

Click to enlarge Screenshot by Jason Cipriani

If you are having trouble editing to an exact frame in the video, you can edit frame by frame by pressing and holding a finger on either end of the yellow bar. You will see the video spread out, revealing individual frames. Slide the end of the bar to either include or cut out video frame(s).

Click to enlarge Screenshot by Jason Cipriani

Once you are happy with your selection, tap the yellow Trim button. You will then be presented with two options for saving the new clip.

  • Trim Original: Saves the new, shorter clip, over the original clip. The original clip will be lost.
  • Save as New Clip: Saves the new clip as a separate video clip. The original clip will still be available.

Select your preferred save method.

Once the video is saved, you can view it in your camera roll. From here, you can send it on via e-mail, MMS and the like (iMessage will be an option once iOS 5 is available).

Similarly, you can edit photos in iOS 5, which is expected to be available later this fall. For a full run down of how to edit your photos in iOS 5, be sure to check out this guide.

Best action cameras of 2022

Best action cameras of 2022

When you think of action cameras, there's a good reason that GoPro is often the first brand name that comes to mind. GoPro cameras are compact, lightweight and built to be tough enough to withstand extreme adventures. But GoPro isn't the only game in town. If you're looking for a good high-resolution, mountable, rugged waterproof camera to take on your next incredible outing, we can help you find the best action camera for your needs.

A good action camera offers a variety of features to help you make a great video recording of your most extreme exploits. Some features are must-haves, like image stabilization and a waterproof case. Others aren't necessarily make or break for a sports camera, such as a touch screen, 4K resolution and remote control compatibility.

With that in mind, here are the best action camera models we've tested. All of these action cams are portable, tough and, depending on the shooting mode, have solid video quality. Keep reading to find the best action camera for you. If you've had good results from an action camera not mentioned here, please share it in the comments.

This is the best single-lens action camera you can get from GoPro at the moment in features and performance. Compared with the Hero 8 Black, there are new tools for photos and videos like being able to schedule recordings or set them for a specific duration -- from 15 seconds to 3 hours -- and it now records at 5K at 30 frames per second. That might sound like overkill, but you can pull high-quality stills from the video, making 5K video good for when you can't choose between getting a movie or stills.

However, the biggest changes are in the design of the GoPro camera. The Hero 9 Black is larger to accommodate a bigger, more powerful battery. The lens cover is also now removable so it can be replaced easily if it gets scratched. It also allows you to add lenses including the new GoPro Max Mod Lens that gives you an ultrawide view with hypersmooth stabilization. The action camera is currently on sale for $400, but if you sign up for GoPro's service, the camera price drops to $350 and that includes the service costs.

While GoPro has long called itself the most versatile camera, the Insta360 One R takes versatility to another level. The One R's modular design lets you swap out camera modules for different features and shooting options. At the moment, the module options include a 4K video wide-angle camera for that traditional 4K action camera experience with 4K footage; a dual-lens 360-degree camera; and a Leica-engineered camera with a 1-inch sensor for the best image quality possible even in low light conditions.

Each camera has its own unique capabilities letting you really push your creativity. However, should you get stuck, the company's mobile app and the Insta360 community are a constant source of inspiration. Speaking of the mobile app, it has superintelligent editing features that make it easy to create sharable clips. And all your footage will look incredibly smooth when you use its FlowState image stabilization.

But one of the best parts of the Insta360 One R is that the company never stops improving it and adding features. For example, it just updated the device so it can be used as a webcam, and with the camera's WiFi you can now livestream with the 360 camera. There is no shortage of accessories for it, either, including a dive housing and a selfie stick that disappears from view when you use it with the 360 camera.

The Hero 8 Black's image quality, stabilization and features aren't too far off from what you get with the Hero 9 Black, but its price is certainly more affordable. This 4K video camera was the company's first to feature the redesigned waterproof housing body with built-in mounting fingers to attach the camera directly to a GoPro mount. This HD video camera also has a customizable interface with shooting presets and improved video stabilization and image quality from the Hero 7 Black. The lens, while not removable like the 9's, is made with Gorilla Glass that's twice as impact-resistant as the glass on past Hero models.

For a company known for its camera drones, DJI got a lot right with its first action cam. One of its stand-out features is its front color screen. Osmo Action might be small, but it's enough to make sure you're centered in the shot when the camera lens is facing you on a selfie stick. Another great feature of the camera is that it responds to voice commands -- the view can be switched with a voice control. It's also waterproof and rugged with removable lens covers, it has great electronic image stabilization, shoots HDR video and has customizable presets so you get to control the shooting modes you want without diving into menus. This is an excellent waterproof camera for people who are looking for better control when shooting photos and videos.

Good 4K video for less than $150 and it has a front display. The Brave LE is quite the deal. The body is water-resistant but, along with a variety of mounts, two batteries, a charger and a wrist remote, Akaso includes a dive housing good to 40 meters (131 feet). A touch screen on the back lets you tap your way through its simple interface to change modes and camera settings. A long press on the Mode button on top lets you switch to the front display so you can see yourself while you shoot.

You get several shooting options with this 4K action camera including video and photo time-lapse modes, slow motion and loop recording. It has Diving and Driving modes: the former to compensate for the lack of red light in underwater scenes, the latter will turn on and off with your car when you have the camera connected to your car for power.

As for picture quality, you'll want to keep this budget action camera set to 4K30 with the image stabilization and video quality set to high for the best results, though. Also, while it offers a solid mix of resolutions and frame rates, not all of them have image stabilization including 1080p120 for slow motion.

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D Ships April 20, Shows Why Cache Matters

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D Ships April 20, Shows Why Cache Matters

Both Intel and AMD have forthcoming boosted versions of existing boxed processors -- for desktop upgrades and new DIY builds -- to compete for your please-moar-faster-gaming bucks. Intel has the rumored Core i9-12900KS and AMD has the Ryzen 7 5800X3D it previewed at CES 2022.

AMD says its processor is "the world's fastest gaming CPU" -- you know Intel will say the same when its turn rolls around -- saying it delivers an average of roughly 15% better 1080p performance than the higher-end Ryzen 9 5900X. The big deal is that it will do so at the same $449 price as the standard 5800X when it ships on April 20, and within the same power envelope, making it a drop-in replacement.

AMD attributes the improvement to its new 3D-stacked L3 cache using its 3D V-Cache technology. This basically allows for adding cache memory upward from the die (vertically) rather than outward, which means it can keep the same footprint.

The company has been highlighting for years how the cache -- temporary data storage for more efficient memory access -- is a key component to improving performance as the number of processor cores grows. If AMD's performance claims for the chip manifest then it's a good example of what it can do. The 3D version has three times the L3 cache of the non 3D version, 96MB compared to 32MB.

Probably to compensate for either power or heat increases, AMD had to drop the clock frequencies a bit, and it's not clear if you'll be able to overclock the processor. Otherwise, the specs are identical.

AMD also announced its latest crop of $99 to $299 boxed processors, which range from a quad-core Zen 2 (Ryzen 4000 series) through an eight-core Zen 3 (Ryzen 5000 series). And if you've been yearning to drop a Zen 3-architecture CPU into a Zen 2, Ryzen 3000-era motherboard, AMD is answering your upgrade dreams. A new BIOS update for some X370, B350 and A320-based motherboards will let you do so. It's slated to become available in April.

Zhiyun Weebill 2 camera gimbal gives you good reason to dump DJI

Zhiyun Weebill 2 camera gimbal gives you good reason to dump DJI

Camera-stabilizer-maker Zhiyun announced the Weebill 2 motorized three-axis gimbal on Thursday. The new model is an update to its Weebill-S and, although it remains compact like that model, it features a new control layout, stronger motors, an updated algorithm and improved axis locks. It's also the first to have a 2.9-inch flip-out color touchscreen that lets you control your camera and, when paired with the company's TransMount Video Transmission transmitter, you can use it to monitor your shot and activate a one-touch Smart Follow feature to track your subject.

The Weebill 2 starts at $549 for the gimbal and a handheld tripod, but you'll be able to get a Combo package that adds a carrying case and a quick-connect sling grip handle for $649. Going up to $899 is a Pro kit that includes everything in the Combo plus the video transmitter and a focus/zoom control motor. A $1,099 kit adds Zhiyun's MasterEye to the Pro kit, which is a motion controller combined with a monitor and image receiver. The Weebill 2 will start at £509 in the UK and AU$899 in Australia.

zhiyun-weebill-2-3.png

The new layout and touchscreen keep all your controls both in reach and out of the way.

Zhiyun

The gimbal uses an Infineon-made sensor that, combined with upgraded motors and its core algorithm, is able to precisely compensate for micro-jitter and speed up stabilizer response, Zhiyun said in its announcement. It can handle a payload of up to 4 kilograms (8.8 pounds). All of this should make it perform better than the Weebill-S, but combined with the redesigned controls you'll have even more reason to upgrade.

Most of the Weebill-S' controls are on the handgrip, which means they're under your hand while you're using the stabilizer and more easily pressed accidentally. With the Weebill 2, the joystick to control your camera's position is within easy reach of your thumb. A control wheel to the rear of the joystick lets you adjust axis, aperture and ISO or zoom and follow focus if you have the optional motor attached. A switch in between the stick and wheel lets you quickly switch stabilizer modes, and next to it is a record button.

A trigger in front repositions your camera or flips it to selfie mode among other things. And then there's the rotating flip-out touchscreen that lets you control even more of the gimbal's features including setting up time-lapse and gesture control. Basically, you don't need to connect your phone and use an app to fully control this gimbal.

Zhiyun switched to a built-in rechargeable battery for this model, which can run for up to 9 hours and can be quickly recharged by USB-C in 1.6 hours. Plus, you can continue to use the stabilizer while it charges. If you need swappable batteries and a longer runtime, though, you'll want to consider the Weebill-S or higher-end Crane 2S.

The Weebill 2's price falls between category leader DJI's $499 RSC 2 and $849 RS 2 but the features come closer to the latter and blow right past it when it comes to the touchscreen and control layout.

We Watched More TV on Streaming Than Cable for First Time Ever, Nielsen Says

We Watched More TV on Streaming Than Cable for First Time Ever, Nielsen Says

Streaming services captured the largest share of television viewing for the first time ever in July, according to data released Thursday from Nielsen, the television ratings authority. Of all the TV watching time in July, 34.8% happened over streaming while 34.4% happened over cable. Broadcast TV captured a 21.6% share of the total.

Nielsen noted that streaming has surpassed broadcast before, but July marked the first time it's also exceeded cable viewing. Cable television's share of viewing fell about 9% from July 2021, while streaming's share increased by nearly 23% year over year, according to the report.

Netflix captured 8% of all viewing in July 2022, thanks in part to people watching nearly 18 billion minutes of the hit series Stranger Things, according to the Nielsen data. Several other streaming services -- including Amazon Prime, YouTube and Hulu -- captured their largest-ever share of viewing time in July.

It's a time of change and increasing competition among streamers. Both Disney Plus and Netflix will be rolling out new ad-supported tiers in the coming months. Netflix had its largest drop in subscribers ever recently and is looking for ways to limit password sharing after raising prices at the beginning of 2022. Disney Plus, ESPN Plus and Hulu (all majority-owned by Disney) will all see price increases in the near future, too. HBO Max and Discovery Plus will merge starting in 2023 after their their parent companies did so earlier this year.

Motorola's Edge Plus Puts a 60MP Selfie Camera Up Front for Sharper Video Calls

Motorola's Edge Plus Puts a 60MP Selfie Camera Up Front for Sharper Video Calls

Motorola has announced its new high-end phone for 2022: the $1,000 Motorola Edge Plus. It has a 6.7-inch screen along with sharper selfie and ultrawide cameras than most phones, including the iPhone 13 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. But Motorola makes compromises in other areas, particularly in the camera's lack of a telephoto lens.

The Edge Plus, which first launched in China as the Edge X30, will be available unlocked through retailers like Amazon, Motorola's website and Best Buy. Motorola hasn't shared specific US launch timing yet, but it did say the phone will also be available through Verizon, Boost Mobile and Republic Wireless in the coming months. The unlocked version will be available at a $100 discount at launch.

Motorola designed some of the Edge Plus' features around trends that emerged during the pandemic, said Ruben Castano, Motorola's head of customer experience, in an interview with CNET. Those trends include more time being spent watching TV, playing games and video chatting on phones. As such, the Edge Plus has a 6.7-inch OLED screen that can boost its refresh rate up to 144Hz and features a 60-megapixel front camera.

"The phone has become the center, almost a hub of entertainment for consumers," said Castano. "So that is the one thing that I think that pandemic did dramatically change in terms of consumer behaviors."

There are also two 50-megapixel cameras on the back along with a 2-megapixel depth camera for taking better portrait photos. The device runs on Qualcomm's newest mobile processor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

Some of the Edge Plus' characteristics, particularly the sharp selfie camera and high display refresh rate, could help Motorola stand out against Samsung, which dominates the Android smartphone market. A refresh rate of 144Hz isn't new to smartphones -- not even for Motorola -- but it isn't exactly common either.

motorola-edge-2022-yellow

The Motorola Edge Plus has two 50-megapixel cameras and a 2-megapixel depth camera.

Motorola

The Asus ROG Phone 5, which is designed for gaming, has a 144Hz refresh rate. But a 120Hz refresh rate is more typical for mainstream phones like Samsung's Galaxy S22 lineup. The 60-megapixel front camera is also somewhat rare; Samsung's top-of-the-line Galaxy S22 Ultra has a lower resolution 40-megapixel selfie camera by comparison.

Motorola is also leaning on the Edge Plus' 50-megapixel ultrawide camera to distinguish it from the pack. Popular phones like the iPhone 13 Pro Max and Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra each have 12-megapixel ultra-wide cameras, potentially giving Motorola the chance to stand out.

However, it's doing so at a cost. Unlike many phones in Edge Plus' price range, Motorola's new phone doesn't have a dedicated telephoto camera lens. The company says other camera improvements it's made regarding pixel size, sensor size and aperture will enable a good enough digital zoom.

On paper, the Edge Plus' 50-megapixel main sensor also sounds like a step down from the older Edge Plus' 108-megapixel camera. But again, Motorola says it's improved the camera's pixel size and focus on this year's model.

motorola-edge-2022-pink

The Motorola Edge Plus uses a digital zoom instead of a dedicated telephoto camera lens.

Motorola

The Motorola Edge Plus also has a 4,800-mAh battery and supports 30-watt fast charging. That's slightly faster than the Galaxy S22's 25-watt fast charging yet not as speedy as the Galaxy S22 Plus' and Galaxy S22 Ultra's 45-watt charging. But Motorola's phone does include an important perk: it comes with a 30-watt charger in the box. Apple and Samsung, meanwhile, don't even include chargers with their phones, let alone fast chargers.

Motorola says the Edge Plus will also receive at least two major Android operating system upgrades and three years of security updates. Samsung, on the other hand, just announced that its Galaxy S22 devices and other recent phones will support four generations of Android upgrades.

Motorola's parent company Lenovo is the third-largest smartphone-maker in the US, capturing 12% of the US market as of late 2021, according to Counterpoint Research. Lenovo doesn't even place in the top five when it comes to global shipments, Counterpoint Research also reports.

But Motorola's approach with the Edge Plus seemingly falls in line with the general direction smartphones are heading. In his story about the future of mobile devices, my colleague Patrick Holland reported that we'll continue seeing more niche phones with targeted appeal. Foldable phones and devices tailored for playing video games, like the Asus Rog Phone 5, fall under that umbrella. With its focus on specific tasks like video chatting and playing games, it sounds like the Motorola Edge Plus does, too.
